Caretaking Dad admits to shaking baby for crying; child in critical condition with brain bleed (Mesa, Arizona)

Caretaking dad CHRISTIAN VASQUEZ apparently got aggravated with his infant son's crying, so he shook him--"probably too hard," Dad admits. Now the baby is in critical condition with a life-threatening brain bleed. No mention of Mom, but in most of these cases, it seems like she's working while Dad is "babysitting."

Mesa baby in critical condition after being shaken

A 19-year-old father was arrested on child abuse charges Monday after his month-old son was shaken so severely that it caused a life-threatening brain bleed that left the child in critical condition, Mesa police said.

Christian Vasquez, 19, was arrested Monday night when doctors called police to Banner Desert Hospital to report the incident, police said.

In addition to the brain bleed, the child had retinal injury. Doctors said they could tell the infant was shaken by the types of the injuries.

Vasquez gave multiple versions of the story when interviewed by police, but admitted to shaking the baby because he wouldn't stop crying, police said.

He demonstrated to police how hard he shook the infant and admitted he had probably shaken him too hard.

He also said he tossed the child into the air four to five times and then put him to sleep in his crib.

Police said a few hours later Vasquez was giving the infant a bath and noticed he was acting strangely, but put the baby back to sleep.

When the baby wouldn't wake later, Vasquez said he gave the baby CPR because he said he wasn't breathing properly.

He told police he didn't take the child to the hospital or call 911
