NORMAL -- Normal police arrested a 20-year-old Bloomington man who allegedly left his 8-month-old son in a minivan in order to enter a Wal-Mart store to shoplift, said Normal police Lt. Eric Klingele.

The child was left unattended Saturday in a child safety seat for an unknown period of time while his father attempted to steal a video from the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 300 Greenbriar Drive, Klingele said.

The man, who was arrested shortly before 3 p.m., faces preliminary charges of endangering the life or health of a child and retail theft.

The child suffered no injuries or heatstroke, Klingele said.

The Pantagraph does not name suspects until charges are filed by the state's attorney's office.
