Father accused of assault while holding baby

A Wilmington man was arrested Sunday on charges of kidnapping and domestic battery after he allegedly assaulted the mother of his children while holding their baby.

Gary Lewis Dailey II, 28, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, assault on a female, resisting arrest, delaying a public officer, child abuse and exposing children to fire danger.

According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jerry Brewer, Dailey got into an argument Sunday morning with the mother of his children at an apartment at 714 Briar Creek Way. The victim said Dailey grabbed her face, choked her and tied her hands with cord, said Brewer. The woman said she was able to escape the home, but Dailey chased after her while carrying their 11-month-old child in his arms. Dailey was allegedly trying to drag her back into the home when an off-duty Wilmington Police Officer intervened and was able to stop the assault and convince Dailey to turn the child over to the mother.

Brewer said, Dailey then returned to his house, got the couple’s 6- and 7-year-old children into the car and drove up to the victim to try to get her into the vehicle.

Police arrived and arrested Dailey, said Brewer.

He said the fire danger charge is because Dailey allegedly left the 6- and 7-year-old children alone in the home while he chased the mother, and the child abuse charge stems from Dailey allegedly assaulting the mother while holding the 11-month old.- F.T. Norton
