TAMPA - A father led police on a high speed chase and at one point, tried to ram a marked patrol car head-on while his four-year-old son watched from the back seat, Tampa Police said.
Timothy Ashley was charged with fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child neglect.
"The child wasn't hurt," said police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor.
According to the police report, officers stopped Ashley's rental car for a traffic infraction. As the officers were preparing a traffic ticket, Ashley and a passenger fled in the car.
The report says, "Initially no pursuit was initiated. However, as the officers were searching for the car, he (Ashley) spotted the officers and attempted to strike their marked patrol car head on. The officer had to take evasive action by driving into a yard to avoid the collision."
The officer was not injured, but apparently Ashley realized how it was going to end. He drove to his grandmother's house to give himself up to police.
