ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - A father was arrested for ramming a parked car even though he knew his two-year-old daughter was in the backseat.
Roswell police said 25-year old Jacob Ortega spotted his ex-wife and their two-year-old daughter in a car with another man on Thursday.
They say Ortega wanted to fight him, even jumped on his ex-wife's car as she drove away.
He chased them down and tried to run them off the road.
When the woman pulled over, police say he slammed his vehicle into the back of her car.
"Unfortunately the two-year-old child was being unbuckled from the car seat, and it threw the two-year-old child to the front seat," said Roswell Police Sergeant Jim Preston.
The girl suffered cuts to her face, but was not seriously injured.
Ortega drove off and was arrested the next day.
Police warn victims of situations like this to be more cautious, saying it could lead to more violence.
"This would be one that we would definitely advise the victim to definitely get a restraining order, to make sure that family knows about it to keep an eye out," explained Sgt. Preston.
This was not Ortega's first run-in with the law.
Back in March, he was charged with aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon. Last month, he was taken to court for child support.
In this case, Ortega is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse.
