Baby rescued after dad abducts and threatens to kill her (Dayton, Ohio)

Dad MICHAEL GILMER has quite the criminal record--domestic violence, assault, grand theft auto. So I suppose it's not surprising that he threatens to kill his 1-year-old daughter (and the police officers who had come to the residence) after a "dispute" with (read: attack on) the baby's mother. Then Dad takes off with the baby in a car, and the authorities don't catch up with him for two hours. After a "struggle," the officers are able to recover the baby safely--thank God for that.
Question: Does this child really benefit from two parents?
Answer: A dispassionate review of the evidence says NO.

By Nick Zeigler - Reporter @ July 13, 2009 4:49 AM

DAYTON, Ohio -- A 1-year-old girl was recovered safely yesterday, July 12, after her father abducted and threatened to kill her.

Police first got a call at 6 a.m. Sunday about a domestic dispute between 29-year-old Michael Gilmer and the mother of his child. When officers arrived at the home at 941 Wilmington Avenue, they said Gilmer threatened to kill his daughter and the officers before getting into a vehicle and fleeing with the young girl.

The incident resulted in an Amber Alert being issued.

Gilmer didn't make it far though -- police located him in Trotwood two hours later. Police said there was a brief struggle, but they quickly arrested the man.

The girl was recovered safely and returned to the care of her mother.

Gilmer is now in the Montgomery County Jail on charges of abduction, child endangering, domestic violence, and criminal damaging.

According to jail records, Gilmer has been arrested dozens of times in the past, mostly for driving without a valid license. His arrest record also includes several for domestic violence, assault, and grand theft auto.
