Convicted sex offender dad holds 4-year-old daughter hostage in police standoff (Newberry County, South Carolina)

Child Rescued from Home; Father in Custody

Newberry County, SC (WLTX) - Newberry County deputies have ended a standoff with a suspect, rescuing the man's daughter in the process.

Officers say they were trying to arrest Shannon J. Smith at a home on Highway 395 near the Saluda County line, but the suspect would not come outside. According to deputies, Smith is from Colorado and is wanted for auto theft and probation. He was also a convicted sex offender.

Smith's four-year-old daughter, who is estranged from, was also inside the home. Investigators say Smith came to Newberry County to see his daughter and that he was able to convince a caregiver to allow him access to her.

After more than three hours of trying to contact Smith. deputies called in additional resources. #Just after 7 p.m., the SWAT team went inside the home, rescued the child, and took Smith into custody. Deputies say Smith was found locked in the shower with his daughter.

No injuries were reported.
