A father has been charged after he was found in his car passed out while he was taking care of his baby girl, police said.

The alleged crime happened Saturday, Jan. 3 around 3 p.m. at the Memorial Park on the 900 block of South 21st Street in Edinburg.

Police received calls about a man passed out in a vehicle before they responded to the scene.

Once officers approached the vehicle, they found Rolando Guzman in the driver's seat of the car and a 1-year-old baby girl crying in a car seat.

It appeared that the baby had been crying in the vehicle for a while, according to authorities.

The 22-year-old father was babysitting his 1-year-old daughter while the baby’s mother was at work, police told Action 4 News.

At first, Guzman was unresponsive. Edinburg police said that once the man woke up, it appeared he was under the influence of synthetic marijuana.

Police arrested the 22-year-old dad for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, public intoxication and abandoning and endangering a child.

The baby’s grandmother took custody of the child after Guzman’s arrest.

The 22-year-old father remains behind bars at the Hidalgo County Jail on a $105,000 bond.
