BAKERSFIELD, CA - A man convicted of first degree murder in the death of his one-month-old son, was sentenced to 25 years-to-life, plus six years, in prison on Tuesday.

During sentencing for James Willis Johnson, Judge John Brownlee talked about the injuries Johnson inflicted on his 34-day-old baby.

"Factually, this trial was tough on anyone who had to listen to testimony and look at photos of a child that was burned and beaten to death. This child suffered, he suffered a great deal," said Brownlee.

James Willis Johnson beat and killed his son Jordan in 2010. The baby was found dead inside a home on Idaho Street in northeast Bakersfield.

Jordan Johnson sustained burns that were never treated and became infected along with multiple broken bones and a severe head injury.

The baby's mother, Denise Belmonte, was sentenced in January to 15 years in prison in a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors say she failed to protect her baby after learning of the abuse.

In exchange for the plea deal, Belmonte testified against Johnson in court.

"Miss Belmonte also testified that Mr. Johnson would tie the baby's arms behind his back because he was knocking the bottle out of his mouth. So literally for the short 34 days of this baby's life, he was brutally abused, mistreated. Whatever word you want to use, it was horrible," said Melissa Allen, Supervising Deputy District Attorney.

Allen called this the worst case of abuse she had ever seen.
