Dad leaves baby on porch in sub-freezing temperatures; happened during "visitation" (Carrier Mills, Illinois)

Dad JOSEPH LEADY was apparently "estranged" from his wife, the mother of their 7-month-old son. But "estrangement" doesn't mean you don't get custody/visitation these days. So Dad happily trotted the baby over to his place, then promptly dumped the baby out on the front step of his apartment--in sub-freezing temperatures--while dad took a snooze all warm and comfy inside. Thank God the neighbors heard the baby cry within 90 minutes of Daddy bringing the baby home, or the baby surely would have died of hypothermia.

I can't even begin to explain this kind of sh**. Is this complete and utter stupidity, or deliberate malice? Does it even matter at some point? Did a judge give this @$$wipe visitation, or was it at the mother's discretion? Sure would be good to know, but news articles seldom reveal that kind of information. The fact that mom is described as "estranged" suggests this "visit" was not entirely her idea.

Southern Ill. man accused of leaving baby on porch in sub-freezing temperatures

CARRIER MILLS, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois man is accused of leaving his infant son outside in sub-freezing temperatures while he fell asleep in his apartment.

The baby survived the ordeal, which Saline County prosecutors are blaming on 22-year-old Joseph Leady of Carrier Mills. Leady is now charged with misdemeanor child endangerment.

Investigators say temperatures were in single digits when the 7-month-old baby was left on a step outside his father's apartment Friday. The child was wearing only a onesy, and his head, face and hands were exposed.

Neighbors heard the baby's cries and called police about 90 minutes after his dad brought him home.

Leady's estranged wife in Carbondale now has custody of the boy.

Leady doesn't have a listed home telephone number. It isn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
