Making a "souvenir" of him sexually abusing his stepdaughter has landed a Calgary man some extra prison time.

Provincial court Judge Catherine Skene yesterday agreed with Crown prosecutor Jenny Rees a consecutive sentence was warranted on a charge of making child pornography.

Skene rejected submissions by defence counsel Chris Leveque that his client had already been punished for the acts caught on tape and shouldn't receive more jail time.

The man, who can't be named, was sentenced last Sept. 23 to four years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of sexual interference on his common-law wife's daughter.

He admitted to a variety of sexual acts over a two-year period between January 2000 and December, 2001, when the girl was between 10 and 12.

At the time he denied allegations made by the victim that he had videotaped some of the abuse.

But less than a month after he was jailed, an individual living in the man's home discovered a VHS tape depicting the man abusing the girl when she was 11.

The 30-minute video included repeated attempts by the then-56-year-old stepfather to sodomize his young victim.

Skene, who ordered the offender, now 64, to serve an additional 21 months, said there were several aggravating factors, including his minimization of his crime.

"The offender referred to his making of child pornography as a souvenir," Skene said.

In a psychiatric report it was noted the dad "referred to his sexual assaults on his daughter as 'I had an affair,' " Skene said.

He also told Dr. David Tano "we fooled around together," she noted.

The offender claimed his victim asked him to videotape their sexual sessions, but Skene said "the tape does not support that.

"She was surprised by the videotape being set up," the judge said.
