A 33-year-old man who threw a Molotov cocktail at his former de facto partner, injuring her and two of their children, has been jailed for 12 years jail.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with attempted murder, arson, and assault occasioning bodily harm. Yesterday he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Defence lawyer Kevin McCreanor said he went to his ex-de facto's Earlville home, in far north Queensland, last October, and became angry when she was not there.

The Supreme Court in Cairns heard he used lawmower fuel to make a Molotov cocktail and was waiting inside when his ex-partner returned with their baby and three-year-old son.

Crown prosecutor Michael Connolly said the accused threw petrol at them, and threatened to kill them and burn the house down.

The court heard he threw the Molotov cocktail, sending flaming petrol onto the three.
Mr McCreanor said his client later told police he thought the petrol bomb would kill his ex-partner.

The court heard the woman suffered first and second degree burns, while the baby received burns to 8 per cent of her body and would likely have permanent scarring.

Justice Stanley Jones sentenced the accused to 12 years' jail and did not set a parole eligibility date.
