Police: Pregnant woman, unborn child's father dead

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities say a pregnant woman was shot and killed by the father of her unborn child, who then turned the gun on himself.

Multiple media outlets said 21-year-old Yumeka Caldwell died in her apartment soon after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigated her complaint Friday morning she had received a threatening phone call from Antonio Phifer.

Police believe Phifer shot Caldwell and before shooting himself.

Police spokesman Robert Fey said officers spoke to Caldwell when they saw Phifer outside the building and gave chase. They then followed a car Phifer was known to travel in and stopped that vehicle, but Phifer was not inside.

Soon after, dispatchers got a call from Caldwell's apartment complex, neighbors saying they had heard several gunshots.

Officers returned to the apartment and found the bodies.
