DHARWAD: A one-year-old girl battered by her father succumbed on Tuesday night.

Rameshwari battled for life at Hubli's KIMS Hospital for a month after being hurled to the floor by her father, Ramesh Sunagar, who was angry at the birth of a girl child.

Doctors at the special children's ward of the hospital said Rameshwari had been responding well to treatment. However, her health suddenly deteriorated on Sunday.

Pediatrician Dr T A Shepur told TOI: "She had been admitted with multiple fractures in the ribs and internal bleeding. There were burns by cigarette butts inflicted on her by her father. The child was responding to treatment, but on Sunday she started vomiting. We administered oral drops and antibiotics, but that did not help. Further, the child had bouts of epilepsy attacks and went into a coma. There was no recovery, and she died at 9pm on Tuesday."

Ramesh, an alcoholic, had been torturing his wife, Laxmi. The harassment increased after she gave birth to Rameshwari. He allegedly beat their children, a four-year-old son and Rameshwari, several times at their home in Mugad village, 10 km from Dharwad, a fact Laxmi kept from everybody.

On December 22, Ramesh beat up the child and threw her on the floor, causing heavy bleeding. When the incident came to light, child protection officer B Usha got the child admitted to KIMS Hospital and lodged a complaint with Dharwad Rural police.

Ramesh was arrested on charge of attempt to murder and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Dharwad Rural police inspector Ramanagouda Hatti told TOI police would now file a murder case against Ramesh.

Rameshwari's body was handed over to her relatives after postmortem on Wednesday. A benumbed Laxmi refused to meet anyone.
