COATESVILLE — A 30-year-old father is behind bars for allegedly assaulting his 1-year-old daughter, leaving the infant in critical condition at A.I. Dupont Hospital with severe injuries.
According to the Coatesville Police Department, city resident Juan J. Silva-Vasquez was arrested after the Westtown-East Goshen Police Department responded to the YMCA in East Goshen for reports of an unresponsive child.
The child is hospitalized at the A.I Dupont Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Delaware with two broken arms and a fractured skull, police said.
The child was under the care of the YMCA’s day care after her mother dropped her off Monday morning, police said. Staff members called police and emergency medical personnel when the baby seemed lethargic and showed signs of physical trauma, according to police sources.
After learning that the mother, who has not been identified, lives in Coatesville, investigators immediately notified the Coatesville Police Department. Coatesville detectives interviewed the child’s family members and searched the family’s home, leading to Silva-Vasquez’s arrest.
Silva-Vasquez is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and endangering the welfare of children. He was transferred to Chester County Prison after failing to post $250,000 cash bail, according to court records.
