Judge orders prison in child abuse case

Father says injuries were accident.

NILES -- A Buchanan man is going to prison after injuring his 10-day-old baby daughter.

Billy John French, 41, of North Redbud Trail in Buchanan, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of second-degree child abuse and 365 days in jail after pleading no contest to one count of fourth-degree child abuse. The incidents occurred from Sept. 10 to 24, 2011, in Buchanan Township.

The infant was discovered to have a bruise on her cheek and a cut on her lips as well as evidence of two previous leg fractures. "Instead of providing for her, this man took severe advantage and hurt her like no parent should," Assistant Prosecutor Cara Wilkinson said.

The baby's mother also spoke and said she forgave him for his actions and would try to be the best mother and father for the small child. She said the baby was developing normally and hopefully will have no memory of how she was treated.
