Bath dad wins jail sentence appeal
September 2, 2011

A YOUNG Melbourne father who burnt his toddler son so badly that the nerve endings in the boy's feet were destroyed has had his three-year jail sentence quashed on appeal.

Shi Chi Mok is likely to be paroled in just over two months after the court yesterday resentenced him to two years' jail with all but nine months suspended. Mok had been jailed for three years after a County Court jury found him guilty of negligently causing serious injury. He maintained that he had placed the 23-month-old in the bath without checking the water temperature, which was 65 degrees. Mok appealed against his sentence.

In their judgment, Justices Geoffrey Nettle, Marcia Neave and Michael Sifris said the jury would have convicted Mok of a more serious offence if they had been convinced he had deliberately held the child down or put him in twice.
