We've followed this story since 2009. Dad GUY TURCOTTE strikes me as a shrewd sociopath who is skilled at milking the system. Somehow he was able to convince all these people that he was deeply mentally ill and depressed--even though he apparently had no documentable mental illness prior to the murders and was able to carry out his job just fine. In reality, he's the classic revenge killer. He was pissed because the mother left him, so he punished her in the most effective way possible--by killing her children. He should spend his life rotting in prison. But no, now he's free to roam around and torment his poor ex-wife. Sickening.

SAINT-JEROME, QUE.—A former Quebec doctor who admitted to stabbing his two children to death has been granted bail.
A judge ruled Friday morning that Guy Turcotte should be freed pending his new first-degree murder trial next year.
Turcotte is charged in the slayings of his children Olivier, 5, and Anne-Sophie, 3, at a rented family home north of Montreal in early 2009.
A jury found Turcotte not criminally responsible in 2011 and he was released from a psychiatric institution in December 2012. The Quebec Court of Appeal overturned the verdict last November, citing errors by the trial judge in his instructions to the jury.
The higher court ordered a new trial, leading to Turcotte’s rearrest in late 2013.
Turcotte told the court during his bail hearing he should be freed because it is his right and that he could be of more use to society as a caregiver to some of his relatives instead of spending time in prison.

SCOTCH PLAINS — The father who police say killed his 11-year-old son last week and then killed himself, also appeared to have tried to set his home on fire in the incident, according to police.
Scotch Plains Police Chief Brian Mahoney said when police arrived at the rented Jerusalem Road home of Jens Elberling, 48, on Saturday morning, they could hear either a smoke or carbon monoxide detector sounding from inside the home.
Mahoney said the Scotch Plains Fire Department and police then forcibly entered the home through a side door into the kitchen, where they found an open oven, turned on and stuffed with clothing.
The clothing continued from the oven in a trail winding through the living room and into a bedroom where police found the bodies of Elberling and his 11-year-old son, Thomas, both apparently shot with a rifle, Mahoney said.
"The clothes didn't appear to be doused in anything, but I'm not an expert," Mahoney said. "They just burned almost like a fuse, and smoldered right away without really igniting."
Police were called to the home after a family member requested a welfare check, Mahoney said.
"It's the ultimate tragedy when children are involved," Mahoney said. "No young child deserves this fate."
Jens Elberling and his wife Ke-Yen (Kate) Chou shared custody of their son Thomas Elberling under a court order issued after Chou filed for divorce last May. The couple clashed over issues that brought police to their former home in Berkeley Heights several times, Jens Elberling said in court papers.
One major disagreement that emerged in the court papers was over their son's education. The quarrel reached a critical point this month with the approach of the new school year, according to court documents.
Thomas Elberling had been home-schooled for the last two years, and according to papers filed in the Superior Court in Elizabeth, Jens Elberling wanted his son's home schooling to continue, contending it met his bright educational needs and allowed time for his daily study of chess.
Thomas Elberling was an expert-level player, who was ranked fifth in his age group in the country, with a rating of 2151, the United States Chess Federation confirmed.
A "family friend" has created an online fundraiser to collect donations for Thomas Elberling's funeral.
"The sudden and unexpected loss of Thomas Elberling has left us all in sorrow," the website says. "He is and will always be deeply missed. We are raising funds to help his family through this tragedy and ease their financial obligations."
The website has raised $2,520 as of Thursday afternoon.

In South Carolina, a 32-year-old father faces murder charges after he led police to the bodies of his five children, ages 1 to 8, who were dumped on the side of an Alabama road.
In Georgia, a 33-year-old father is charged with intentionally leaving his toddler son to die in a hot SUV, strapped in his car seat for seven hours.
In Utah, a 39-year-old mother is charged with strangling or suffocating six of her newborns from 1996 to 2006 because, police say, she was addicted to drugs and could not care for them.
Three parents accused of crimes that society considers among the most heinous. All three high-profile incidents occurred this year, raising again the terrible question: What kind of parents intentionally kills their offspring?
A USA TODAY examination of more than three decades of FBI homicide data shows that on average, 450 children are killed every year by their parents. Northeastern University criminologists applied statistical models to the records. USA TODAY analyzed the database for a detailed look at who kills, who is killed and how. Several patterns are apparent:
•The vast majority of child victims – three out of four – are under 5. More than a third of all victims are under a year old.
•Nearly half of all victims died from physical beatings or other injuries at a parent's hands.
•Fathers are more likely to kill. Men killed six out 10 children, most often beating or shooting them. Fathers were at fault in 75% of cases when children were shot to death by a parent and in 64% of cases when a child was beaten. "Violence is a masculine pursuit," says Jack Levin, a Northeastern University criminologist.
•When mothers kill, they are far more likely to kill victims under the age of 1 than children of any other age. Nearly 40% of all children killed by their mothers were less than a year old. When a parent is accused of killing a child, it dominates headlines and social media.
"People are fascinated by this," says Sara West, a forensic psychiatrist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. "It's an unfathomable concept."
Wednesday, murder charges were pending in South Carolina against Timothy Ray Jones Jr. He was in custody in Alabama in connection with the deaths of his five children. When Jones was stopped at a checkpoint Saturday, police found chemicals for making meth and other drug paraphernalia in his car. Tuesday, he led police to the bodies, which were in five garbage bags on the side of a road. Police say Jones traveled through multiple states with his children's bodies in his car. J
ustin Ross Harris is charged with murder after leaving his 22-month-old son, Cooper, in an SUV on a hot June day in Cobb County in northern Georgia. Police say he wanted a child-free life and was sexting women during the day as his son died. Harris says he did not intend to kill his son; he says he forgot to drop him off at day care.
Megan Huntsman was charged in April with killing her newborns from 1996 to 2006. She told investigators she strangled or suffocated six babies, placed them in plastic bags and packed them in boxes in the garage of her home in a suburb of Salt Lake City. She was arrested after her husband found one of the bodies in a white box, sealed with electrical tape, while he was cleaning out the garage.
In Saco, Maine, 33-year-old father Joel Smith appeared to follow a deadly pattern seen repeatedly in the FBI data: In murders with multiple victims, fathers are the culprit 70% of the time.
In July, Smith shot his wife, Heather, 35; his sons, Jason Montez, 12, and Noah Montez, 7; and his daughter Lily Smith, 4, then shot himself. They described Smith as a troubled, suicidal man with financial problems.
Psychiatrists and criminologists say parents who kill their children tend to fit one of five categories:
•A parent suffering a psychotic break.
•A parent who thinks he is killing out of altruism because he doesn't want a child to grow up without him.
•A parent acting out of revenge against a spouse or partner.
•A parent who kills an unwanted child.
•A parent who kills from neglect or by recklessness.
"They are all twisted perspectives on love, loyalty and altruism," Levin says. "There are mixed motives in many of these cases."
Dramatic cases get the headlines, forensic psychiatrist Phillip Resnick says — such as a parent who doesn't want the responsibility of a child or wants revenge against a partner — but murders in those categories are fewer.
Resnick, who wrote a landmark 1969 study that categorized parents who kill their children, says mothers and fathers kill for different reasons.
Mothers are most likely to kill newborns, he says, because of mental illness such as postpartum depression or because they can't handle the stress of caring for a baby.
"The day a child is born is the day a child is most likely to be killed by a parent," he says.
Mothers who kill tend to do so on impulse, and they tend to be younger, the FBI data show. The number of mothers who kill peak at ages 20 to 22 — younger than the national average of age 26 for bearing a first child.
The average age of fathers who kill is 30. They tend to plan the murders, says Levin, the criminologist. They are more likely to kill the entire family, then themselves, he says. Often a murder-suicide is precipitated by a catastrophic loss such as a job layoff or divorce.
"A man sees himself as the main support of a family," Resnick says. "He may feel like it is his responsibility to not let his family suffer. You may have a severely depressed father who may think his children are better off dead with him."
Younger children are most often the victims because they are the most vulnerable and can't fight back, Resnick says. They are the children that a parent has had less time to bond with and the ones who bring more stress because they require the most attention, he says.
As much attention as such a terrible crime gets when a case is in the headlines, the experts say, it still needs more study.
Levin says, "We're still in the dark in terms of predicting who commits this hideous crime."

A father yesterday shot his eight-year-old daughter in the head as she played before turning the gun on himself.
Terrified neighbours heard the girl’s mother – who is separated from the father – scream ‘he’s got a gun’ before two shots rang out.
The girl, who had been playing outside her home, was taken to hospital but last night her condition was described as ‘life-threatening’.
Her father was pronounced dead at the scene in the village of Northiam, East Sussex, with a single gunshot wound to the head.
When armed police arrived they found the father’s body slumped in his car outside the house.
Officers last night described the incident as ‘domestic’ and residents claimed the couple may have been involved in a custody battle over their daughter.
One said: ‘They have only been in the village for a year and I’ve never seen a father around.
‘I’ve heard there may have been an ongoing custody dispute.’
Residents expressed their shock at yesterday afternoon’s devastating events in the normally peaceful village.
They described the daughter as ‘absolutely beautiful’ and ‘incredibly charming’.
Neighbours claimed the girl’s father was no longer in a relationship with her mother, but that he had returned to the house.
She said the girl walked to school with her mother every day and that the pair had only lived in the neighbourhood for just over a year, adding: ‘This sort of thing just does not happen around here.
'We can’t quite believe it.’
Anthony Burr, 37, who runs a public relations agency, said panic swept the neighbourhood when people realised somebody had shot a young girl. He added: ‘I was in the garden when I heard the shots and shortly after, my friend came over and told me that my children were locked in his house.
‘We thought at that point that a gunman was on the loose, so you can imagine the panic that swept the neighbourhood. Then I started to get reports that he had shot himself.
‘What appears to have transpired is that a father has gone to his ex’s house where his daughter lives and has shot her.’
Writing on Twitter, Izzy Simmons said: ‘12 police cars, two undercover cars and two ambulances, just hope the little girl or her mum whoever has been shot is okay. The whole village has gone grey.’
Another resident said his mother ran to the scene and lifted the girl in to her house, laying her on the sofa before phoning 999.
The girl was taken to King’s College Hospital in London.
Neighbours said the police took at least 15 minutes to get to the scene as it is ‘in the middle of nowhere’.
The upmarket village is situated 12 miles from Hastings on England’s south coast.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: ‘One person suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital for treatment.
‘The body of a man was found at the scene in Northiam.
‘His death is not being treated as suspicious.’
A man who lives close to where the incident, which took place between 6pm and 8pm, said the village was 'on lockdown' and armed police were 'everywhere'.

When we first reported on this case, I predicted that the "daddy just snapped" story would just collapse with more information. And sure enough, this "good" dad has a criminal record including substance addictions issues AND a history of child abuse (beatings, withholding food) that CPS workers ignored REPEATEDLY. As in AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES.
Meanwhile, the worst we are told about Mom is that she may have had an affair (or maybe not, depending on whether you believe this killer of five innocent children). Otherwise, everybody reports she seems like a very nice person.
Once again, we see what LIES the fathers rights people spread. In reality, fathers are not discriminated against. Even drug-addicted, violent fathers with a criminal record get full custody--only to kill the kids, because it was about control anyway. And how CPS and the courts collude in these crimes.

South Carolina child protection workers visited the family of a man accused of killing his five children at least a dozen times since 2011 in response to reports of abuse and neglect, state records released show.
The children, aged 1 to 8, said father Timothy Ray Jones Jr., 32, spanked them and made them do push-ups for punishment, but they did not appear afraid of him, according to workers, who did not remove the children from his care.
In notes about their most recent visit on August 7, social workers said Jones, a divorced father with legal custody of the children, seemed overwhelmed. However, after investigating a report that he was beating the children and not feeding them enough, workers did not find them to be in immediate danger.
Police say the children were already dead by the time South Carolina authorities learned on Monday that the children's grandmother in Mississippi had reported them missing after they did not show up for a planned visit.
Following his arrest on unrelated charges in Mississippi on Saturday, police said Jones confessed to the slayings and led them to his children's decomposing bodies, which he had wrapped in garbage bags and dumped near a rural logging road in Alabama. Authorities have not said how the kids were killed.
Jones is expected to be arrested on murder charges after being returned to South Carolina on Thursday.
He likely killed the children soon after he picked them up from school and day care in late August, Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty has said.
Jones, who worked for Intel at its office in Columbia, South Carolina, was also possibly accused of other unrelated criminal acts before.
In 2002, a Timothy R. Jones with the same birth date was sentenced in McHenry County, Illinois, to prison time for charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, theft, burglary, forgery and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He served 18 months behind bars, including time spent in county jail, before getting released on parole from prison in 2003, according to Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer.
Records from South Carolina's Department of Social Services, which has been criticised by lawmakers in the past of mishandling child welfare cases, show the agency had long been aware of the Jones family. Child welfare workers began visiting the family at their Leesville home in fall 2011 when there were only three children, and continued through their mother's last two pregnancies, as well as after Jones reported his wife had left him "for a younger man."
The visits stopped for a time after fall 2012, when workers said Jones took the children to Mississippi, where he had relatives.
The state resumed contact in May after a report that Jones was beating the children, records show. Jones said he had grabbed a child by the back of the shirt and lifted him up because he destroyed his brother's toy.
Caseworkers concluded there was not enough evidence to arrest Jones.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A 31-year-old Grand Rapids man authorities say shook his 2-month-old son, causing the baby to have seizures, made his initial appearance Monday in Wood County Circuit Court.
Wood County Circuit Judge Todd Wolf set a $10,000 signature bond for Casey R. Hanneman during the initial appearance. Hanneman is charged with child abuse, and, if convicted, faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
According to the criminal complaint, at 1 a.m. July 19, the baby's crying woke Hanneman, who got up to feed him. Hanneman fed the baby his formula, but the baby wouldn't stop crying. Hanneman gripped the baby beneath both armpits, shook him and said "Please stop crying," according to the complaint.
The baby began choking and went limp, according to the complaint. Hanneman and the baby's mother immediately took the child to Riverview Medical Center, but they left without having him checked when the baby appeared to return to normal.
During the next few days, the baby suffered two seizures, according to the criminal complaint. He was admitted to the Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Marshfield. A child abuse expert determined the baby suffered injuries consistent with "shaken baby syndrome," according to the complaint.
As a condition of the bond, Hanneman can have no contact with the baby, anyone under 18 or the baby's mother.

"Really good" custodial dad murders five children and dumps their bodies in the woods (Wilcox County, Alabama)
You know what really makes me sick? When some f***er like this one, who slaughtered his five kids, is praised as a "really good dad." Guess we set the bar pretty low, eh? Just what do you have to do to be a not-so-good dad? Slaughter 20 people?
I don't buy that this guy "snapped" for one minute. In almost all these kinds of cases, IF it involves mental illness, there is a history of mental illness. So either one of two scenarios happened.
1) Some judge gave a drug-addicted, deeply mentally ill, and demented father custody of five young children because?
2) Some judge gave a drug-addicted, deeply violent, and abusive father with custody of five children because?
Either way, we're not told who gave this piece of sh** custody or why the mother was shoved out of their lives. Probably just another example of an abusive and violent daddy (with an enabler father) who set out to punish/control the mother by stripping her of her kids, and then killed the kids like so many rabid dogs.
I want to see the judge's name.

The bodies of five young children were found in the woods of Alabama on Tuesday, and police said they are believed to be siblings who were reported missing in South Carolina a week ago.
The children’s father, Timothy Ray Jones Jr., 32, was in custody in Mississippi, where police stopped his blood-soaked Cadillac Escalade over the weekend, a prosecutor told NBC News.
“God help me and God help my son,” Jones Jr.’s father told NBC News after learning that police had found the five bodies in an undeveloped clearing off Highway 10 in Wilcox County, Alabama.
His son has not been charged in connection with the deaths of the children, who ranged in age from 1 to 8. He was being held on a charge of driving under the influence while the investigation continued, said Daniel Jones, the district attorney of Smith County, Mississippi.
The DA said it was likely he would be prosecuted in South Carolina.
“What we believe has occurred is he killed the children in South Carolina and drove to Alabama with them,” he said.
He said that the father, who was allegedly high on synthetic marijuana when he was detained in Mississippi, made incriminating statements and gave investigators the information that led them to the bodies in Alabama. Notes referring to violence against the children were also found, he said.
“I wouldn’t say he made a full confession, but he said enough,” the DA said.
Asked about a motive, the prosecutor said the suspect — who was described as a computer genius — claimed the children were plotting to kill him.
“I think he probably just went mad,” he said.
Timothy Jones Sr. said the last time anyone had seen his son at work or the children at school in Lexington County, South Carolina, was Aug. 28.
The six of them were supposed to travel to Mississippi for a family gathering on Labor Day weekend but never arrived, he said. He said that on Sept. 3, he made a missing persons report.
Meanwhile, the mother of the children also reported them missing on Sept. 3 after she could not reach her ex-husband, who had custody of the kids, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office.
Jones Jr. was not heard from until Sept. 6 when he was stopped at a checkpoint, where he encountered a sheriff’s deputy who “had been around long enough to know the smell of death,” the DA said. “He picked up on it immediately.”
The deputies opened the doors of the Escalade and “saw he had taken bleach and poured it all over the back of the Escalade,” the DA said. “You could tell where it bleached the carpet but the blood was still there and there were maggots. They took him into custody at that time and as he came off the synthetic marijuana he began to talk about what happened.”
The elder Jones said his son had no history of violence or emotional problems. He had primary custody of the children after his divorce was finalized a year ago.
“He’s been a really good dad,” he said shortly before getting the tragic news from Alabama.
