Martin Martinez is suspected of killing four children and two women.

The suspect in the weekend slayings of five people in Modesto was hit Thursday with murder and child-abuse charges stemming from the 2014 death of a 2-year-old boy, the son of one of the homicide victims.

Martin Martinez, 30, was transferred from Santa Clara County jail to Stanislaus County, where he was arraigned Thursday afternoon in the death last October of Christopher Ripley of Modesto. In court, he was hunched and in shackles as his lawyer pleaded not guilty on his behalf to the charges and a judge set bail at $5 million.

The accused killer said little during the hearing other than to confirm his birth date to the judge and the correct pronunciation of his name.

Martinez was charged with murder and felony child abuse causing Christopher’s death. The child’s mother, Amanda Crews, 38, and his 6-year-old sister, Elizabeth Ripley, and 6-month-old half-sister, Rachael, were among the victims in the July 18 slayings in Modesto.

Martinez was the boyfriend of Crews, and the father of the baby killed in the massacre.

He has not been charged in the mass slayings that also claimed the lives of his mother, Anna Brown Romero, 57, and an unidentified 5-year-old relative.

Sitting in the courtroom Thursday was Christopher’s father, Timothy Ripley, who was surrounded by family and friends.

“The community needs to see that these people are loved and missed,” Ripley said. “Even though they are gone, they still need our support.”

Police Chief Galen Carroll has said the attacks at Crews’ Modesto home came two days after a forensic analysis of Christopher Ripley’s head injury concluded he was a victim of abuse and hit his head on a tiled floor.

Martinez, who was alone with Christopher at the time of the Sept. 30 incident, gave differing versions of what happened, investigators said. The version cited by police involved the boy falling and hitting his head on a carpeted floor while the two were play wrestling.

Investigators said Christopher had suffered earlier injuries documented by photos taken at his day care center.

Martinez and Crews denied any abuse related to those incidents, which they said occurred while the child was being potty trained. Martinez was free as investigators awaited the report on the child’s Oct. 2 death. Police have defended the nine-month delay, saying they had only one chance to bring a successful case.

Ripley said he hasn’t been given a clear reason why Modesto police did not seek charges as soon as the report confirming his son’s homicide came in two days before the multiple slayings.

“I keep asking the Modesto police department why they didn’t arrest him on Friday, and why they didn’t put the case together sooner,” he said. “I don’t think they were in all that big a hurry.”

The suspect was arrested just hours after the five slayings as he was leaving a San Jose movie theater with his father.

His attorney, Stephen Foley, invoked his client’s right to a speedy hearing on the charges and the next hearing is set for Wednesday morning. Foley declined to comment.

The Stanislaus County coroner’s office said the cause of death for the five victims has not been determined. The sheriff’s office issued a statement Wednesday night saying they were not identifying the 5-year-old victim out of respect for the family’s privacy.

District attorney spokesman John Goold said after the hearing that Martinez faces life in prison at most for the charges, not the death penalty. He would not discuss the five homicides, saying the matter is under investigation.

MODESTO -- Late last week, police here were on the verge of making an arrest in one of the most unforgivable crimes: the murder of a 2-year-old child.

But in the tiny window between when they had hard evidence and when they could obtain a warrant to take their suspect into custody, Martin "Marty" Martinez purportedly killed five people, including three more children.

That stunning revelation Monday intensified a tragedy that began on a quiet Modesto street and led to San Jose, where Martinez was arrested early Sunday. Making matters worse were the newly released identities of the dead: Martinez's girlfriend, the 6-month-old daughter they had together, her 6-year-old daughter, Martinez's own mother and his 5-year-old niece.

Police believe that after the killings of Amanda Crews, 38, and the others, Martinez drove away in his red Lincoln Navigator, heading to East San Jose where he has extended family.

When police caught up with him at 1 a.m. the next morning, he was walking to his car after going to a movie with his father at a local mall. He was arrested without a fight.

Martinez, 30, is being held without bail in a Santa Clara County jail, awaiting transfer to Stanislaus County. Modesto police announced Monday that he will be charged in the October death of 2-year-old Christopher Ripley, Crews' third child, who died two days after being rushed to a hospital with head injuries Martinez told authorities happened when the two were wrestling.

Martinez has not yet been charged in the deaths of Crews, a Stanislaus County physician, her daughters, Elizabeth Ripley, 6, and 6-month-old Rachael Martinez; Martinez's mother, Anna Brown Romero, 57; and Martinez's 5-year-old niece, whose name was not immediately released.

Modesto Police Chief Galen Carroll said Martinez, Crews, Elizabeth and Christopher were living together in a Pasadena Lane home in October and that Martinez was alone with Christopher when the boy was injured.

Carroll said that while detectives and prosecutors pursue that case against Martinez they also will build a case against him in the weekend deaths. Martinez is the only suspect in those homicides, he said.

Police have not disclosed how the victims died or established a motive. Carroll said it was unlikely Martinez knew about a neuropathologist's findings, given to police Thursday, that Christopher died from blunt-force trauma and was a homicide victim and that they were closing in on him as a suspect. Carroll said detectives were pursuing a warrant to arrest Martinez in that case. It was issued after Saturday's killings, when police feared Martinez would flee.

Martinez and Crews lived with the children at the Nob Hill Court home until a couple of months ago when he had to move out because of a protective order issued by Children Protective Service regarding Christopher's death, Carroll said. He also said Crews was supportive of Martinez and there were no domestic violence calls to the house. Martinez's mother was apparently living at the home after her son moved out.

There was "no indication leading up to that time that any of this would occur," Carroll said Monday at a news conference when reporters asked why Martinez hadn't been arrested before Saturday.

On the sidewalk in front of the Martinez family home in East San Jose, the suspect's cousin, Gina Martinez, told news reporters that Martin Martinez took his father, Jesus, to the movies without saying anything out of the ordinary.

"My uncle didn't know anything that had happened," she said. "He didn't tell him anything. Everything was just normal."

Gina Martinez said relatives were completely "shocked" by the allegations.

"We have no idea if he did it," Gina Martinez, 44, said. "We don't know. He's innocent until proven guilty. ... I just want to see him, ask him what's going on. What's happening here?"

Martin Martinez has no apparent criminal record in Santa Clara County, according to court records, and neighbors of the Lucerne Way home said Martinez was not a regular presence there.

His cousin said he lived in San Jose until he was 5 or 6, when his father moved the family away. At some point, she said, Martinez's brother moved with their father to Idaho, where the brother later died. Gina Martinez said the death affected Martinez greatly, but she declined to name the brother or say how he died.

"It affected all of us," she said.

Older by 14 years, Gina Martinez said she didn't know her cousin well enough to talk about his parents' divorce. But she said he loved Crews and their baby daughter.

"She's a baby. She's innocent. Whoever did this. We don't know yet," she said. "He loved his family, loved his family. He was a generous, loving person."

A makeshift memorial continues to grow in front of the Nob Hill Court home in east Modesto, where the bodies were found about 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Modesto police officers were called to Crews' home for a welfare check after she and her daughter didn't show up to a planned meeting with friends.

MCCALLA, AL (WBRC) - Four capital murder warrants have been issued for a McCalla man in the deaths of his wife and two children, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for 47-year-old Stephen Sean Hutcheson, who they believe is still armed and dangerous. Deputies say anyone who sees him should not make contact with him, but should instead call local law enforcement.

Hutcheson is charged with one count of capital murder for each of his victims and an additional capital murder charge because his son was under the age of 14.

Officials believe he is driving the family's 2005 silver Dodge Stratus with the license plate number 1AS7156. Investigators say because of his financial situation, they believe it's likely he's still in the Jefferson County area.

Sgt. Jack Self says Jefferson County sheriff's deputies were called to a home by concerned relatives on Sunday, June 28 and found the bodies of 49-year-old Doris Hutcheson, 14-year-old Kimberly Hutcheson and 12-year-old Peyton Hutcheson inside. Each had been shot.

Investigators believe Hutcheson shot his wife and daughter twice in the head while they slept. They said he shot his son once in the neck and twice in the face.

Jefferson County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. David Agee said it's possible Peyton Hutcheson was awake when his dad shot him. He was found next to the couch, according to District Attorney Bill Veitch.

“Crime scenes tell a story. It’s quite possible the son was awake and saw what his father was about to do," Agee said in a news conference on Wednesday.

Agee said the "evidence is clear" that Hutcheson is responsible for killing his family. The believe it happened sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Veitch says after Hutcheson killed his family, investigators believe he left the house to meet his girlfriend. They met up in the parking lot of the Winn Dixie on Morgan road around 4 a.m. Saturday, June 27.

Authorities believe the pair bought cocaine three times in the next 24 hours and checked into a a motel in Bessemer around 8 a.m. Saturday. Hutcheson left in his own vehicle on Saturday or Sunday.

The girlfriend told authorities she had no idea about the murders. She told them Hutcheson kept wanting to drive by his home, which she found odd.

Lt. Agee said Jefferson County investigators made contact with the girlfriend and she has been cooperating with them.

"There is a girlfriend who plays a part in this. Her part is not as a participant in the crime, but we did track this person, identify her, and she’s been cooperative," he said.

Authorities say the victims' relatives hadn't heard from the family over the weekend. Deputies forced entry to the home when they arrived on the scene and found the bodies inside.

Veitch added that Hutcheson used his wife's cell phone to text her sister "I'm going to the beach" to prevent questions by the family.

Doris Hutcheson’s sister-in-law, Amanda Burchfield, spoke with FOX6 over the phone on Wednesday. She's still trying to come to terms with the senseless acts of violence in her family.

"In one way I'm glad that we finally have that one answer as to the who? You know, for sure. But you know, I still got all the why? If he wanted to run off like that, why didn't he just go?” she asked.

Lt. Agee said they do believe drugs play a part in this crime.

"We can’t say he was on drugs when he committed the murders, but we can say there was drug activity during the course of these events," Agee said.

The U.S. Marshals Task Force has joined the search for Hutcheson. Lt. Agee said multiple agencies are hunting for Hutcheson, and they are confident they will find him.

“We will not stop until this man is located," he said.

He added that the case has been a shock to the entire community and to those who have to investigate these types of crimes.

"Normal people can’t comprehend how a person can take their child’s lives in such a manner," Lt. Agee said. "Everyone wants to answer the question 'Why?' but only Mr. Hutcheson can answer that question."

"Our job is to find him and we will," he added.

Lt. Agee said once Hutcheson is captured, he will be held without bond.

Stephen Hutcheson worked as a maintenance employee for the Shelby County School System. They put him on unpaid leave after the murder charges were filed on Wednesday.

Missing family likely died in murder-suicide, Kenai police say

Findings from the State Medical Examiner Office suggest a family of four, missing on the Kenai Peninsula for nearly a year before their remains were discovered in March, were the victims of a murder-suicide, Kenai police said Wednesday.

In a release, the Kenai Police Department said the findings are consistent with findings from their own investigation and that of the FBI, which indicate that “Brandon Jividen shot and killed Rebecca Adams, Michelle Hundley, Jaracca Hundley, the dog Sparks and then committed suicide by shooting himself."

The mystery surrounding the family's disappearance may have come to a close, but family members said Wednesday they’re far from finding closure.

“We thought there would be closure when we buried them,” Rebecca Adams’ uncle Dennis Gifford said. “But no. I don’t even know what closure is.”

The family went missing on May 31, 2014.

Family, friends, volunteers and law enforcement searched for months for signs of their whereabouts but came up empty-handed -- until March, when remains were discovered in a low, grassy area about 15 yards off a trail packed down for vehicles and four-wheelers.

On Wednesday, police said investigators found two handguns “in close proximity” to Jividen’s remains, five spent shell casings and fired bullets.

Rebecca Adams’ aunt Kim Gifford said when the family went missing, a conclusion like this was “the furthest thing” from her mind.

“As we learned more information, this path was one we saw, but we prayed it wouldn’t be it,” Dennis Gifford said. “Brandon’s mom and sister have become a part of our family and we love them dearly. We hoped none of this would happen.”

The Kenai Police Department said any theory about a motive at this point would only be “speculative.”

In a statement, the family of Jividen expressed condolences to the families of Adams and the Hundleys and said the result of the investigation "was not what our family had anticipated."

"These acts are unthinkable, unimaginable, and not consistent with the father, son, brother, and friend that so many of us knew and loved," the statement said.

Kenai police declined to provide any additional comment on the case Wednesday.

Police identify Mont. family killed in murder-suicide

ANACONDA, Mont. -- A southwestern Montana man told an acquaintance that he shot his family and planned to kill himself because his wife had been "mocking him and riding him all day," law enforcement officers said.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge Police Chief Tim Barkell on Tuesday released the names of all five people killed in a quadruple murder-suicide Sunday morning in a log cabin miles from any neighbors in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.

The shooter, he said, was Michael Augustine Bournes. Bournes, 59, previously lived in Taos, New Mexico. His wife was Arie Arlynn Lee, 37. The children were identified as two boys -- 5-year-old Augustine and 4-year-old Woodrow -- and a 1-year-old girl, also named Arie.

Police believe Bournes first shot his wife in the kitchen and his infant daughter in her crib before he walked outside and shot the two other children about 20 feet from the cabin, Barkell said.

All five died of single gunshot wounds to the head.

Bournes carried the bodies inside and laid them on a bed, placing their young sister's body in between the brothers, Barkell said.

Bournes called an acquaintance to tell him he shot his family and was going to kill himself. He set fire to a chair or a sofa, then laid down next to the children's bodies and shot himself in the head with the .45 caliber handgun.

The acquaintance called 911 and told officers that Bournes "said his wife had been mocking and riding him all day. That's all he said," Barkell said.

Officers didn't find any evidence in the cabin that revealed why Bournes shot his entire family, and Barkell said he planned to close the case after tying up "a few loose ends."

Police and firefighters had difficulty finding the remote cabin, and had to put out the fire before entering and finding the bodies.

Barkell said Bournes was a handyman who had constitutionalist and anti-government literature in his pickup truck. He said the family moved to the area about three years ago and was virtually unknown to any county officials or law enforcement.

Neither of the adults had full-time jobs, and Bournes performed odd jobs for people such as plumbing and logging, Barkell said.

Bournes bought the 20 acres of land between five and seven years ago, said Steve Kamps, who sold the remote mountain property. Anaconda-Deer Lodge officials said Bournes never filed the deed from the sale and did not apply for the permits required for the cabin he built in 2013.

County officials didn't realize anybody was living there until officials performing assessments in the area came across the cabin last year. County planning director Doug Clark said that happens more often in the off-the-grid location than county officials would like.

"There are people out there who would just prefer their solitude," he said.

County officials sent Bournes a letter saying he needed certification for the home, but Bournes did not respond, Clark said.

Officials only realized children were living there when somebody called and asked whether the county would plow the road so the kids could be transported into town for school and daycare, said Clark and Heather Edwards, the county CEO's executive assistant.

Barkell released the family's names Tuesday after notifying Bournes' relatives in New Mexico along with Lee's mother and her brother, who lives in Spokane, Washington. The brother was headed to Montana on Tuesday, Barkell said.

Blood stains and spent 45-caliber shells were found outside the cabin, indicating the two boys were shot outside, Barkell said.

The cabin sits in the middle of a sprawling property with semitrailers, tents and tools scattered across several acres. Fire officials circled the cabin with police tape, though gawkers were scarce. The shootings are the first homicides in the county in two years.

"This is the biggest body count I've had since I've been here," said Barkell, who has been in law enforcement for 27 years.

Police in Alaska say a couple and their two young children who were found shot dead at their home in Anchorage last week died as a result of a murder-suicide carried out by the mother's boyfriend.

In a statement released Thursday, investigators said that evidence points to Curtis Young III, 24, shooting and killing his girlfriend, 27-year-old Desiree Gonzales, and their children, 4-year-old Zaiden Young and 17-month-old Zarielle Young, before turning the gun on himself.

'While the investigation is still [ongoing], with lab results pending, the evidence supports the theory that this was a contained scene and that this was a murder/suicide,' said Police spokeswoman Anita Shell in a statement.

Earlier, authorities had called the deaths an isolated domestic violence incident but stopped short of saying they suspected a murder-suicide.

A relative who went to check on the family at their apartment in Alaska's largest city found the four dead from gunshot wounds May 13.

The children's father usually dropped Zaiden and Zarielle off at their grandparents' home in the mornings before the grandmother took them to the babysitter, Police Sgt. Mike Couturier said during a press conference last week.

Their mother, Melissa Randlolph, was stabbed Tuesday night, Feb. 10, at their home in Paoli, Ind.

Police said Jeremy Gehl killed himself after committing the crimes at the home of his estranged wife. It happened during an argument.

Once again, the cops play dumb and refrain from identifying a motive. But it's really the same-old, same-old. Dad CEDRIC PRATHER had a history of domestic violence (I'm sure the one police call reported here is merely the tip of the iceberg.) This typically goes hand-in-hand with narcissistic entitlement and coercive control issues. Dad's custody/visitation rights are not spelled out here, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had legal access to these kids. He was, according to a neighbor, aggravated about child support. And yet this piece of sh** was apparently allowed to run around with a gun. Allowing somebody like this access to firearms is like holding a match over a can of gas. It was almost inevitable that there would be an explosion.

A girl screamed 'Daddy No' while running away from her house after her father shot his ex-wife, her new boyfriend and three siblings.

Neighbors described how the teenager tried to escape Cedric Prather, 33, during a rampage in the Atlanta suburb of Douglas on Saturday that left Latoya Andrews, also 33, her boyfriend Terry Brown and two young children dead.

Siblings London, seven, and her brother Jeremiah, nine, were killed while their big sister Misha, 15, and another girl, eight, remain in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

According to the Atlanta Constitution Journal, Prather, the father of all of the children involved, had driven to the house dressed in black and paced up and down outside before barging in.

Three of the girls then ran from the house, with the eldest begging him to stop, before they were all shot.

Residents nearby said they were then left bleeding in the street before Prather turned the gun on himself.

The family's eldest son, a teenager, was playing basketball at the time of the shooting, and did not find out what happened until he was on his way home.

The victims were supposed to attend, the paper reported, but they did not make it.

A motive for the shooting has not been released, however police twice visited the pair's house in 2013 responding to a domestic abuse complaint.

Neighbor Nick Cook added: 'It was over the stupidest things. It was over child support and taxes.'

Douglas County Sheriff's Lt. Glenn Daniel said authorities received a 911 call Saturday afternoon suggesting there had been a shooting in Douglasville.

Witnesses described how the suspect parked his car down the street, walked to the front of the house, crept inside and opened fire.

He told CBS 46 the shooter was the ex-husband of one of the victims, but he did not know how long the couple had been divorced.

EMTs arrived at the scene and were reportedly treating victims as they lay in the middle of the residential street.

Teresa Carter, 59, said she heard the gunfire from inside her home but did not see what happened. Police said victims were shot inside and outside the home.

Carter said she often saw the children playing in the driveway and around the neighborhood. They enjoyed petting her dog.

'I heard shots, and I heard the girl scream,' Carter said. 'And then I heard four more shots.'

Brandon Hallman was working on a car a few houses down when the shooting started.

'I heard a couple quick shots, you know, back to back to back. Went out there and, you know, looked and it was already over,' Hallman said. 'We just grabbed some towels and kind of went down there to try and help before the paramedics got here.'

Another neighbor, Angela Ansah, struggled to explain to her own children what happened to their slain friends a few houses down. Ansah said some of the children targeted Saturday often came over to her house to play with her own children.

'These are children I see every day, every blessed day,' Ansah said.

Chief Deputy Stan Copeland, of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office told WSBTV: 'We had multiple victims shot in the street.

'Some of those are siblings, so some (of) these (people) are related. We just don't know who is who right now.'

The shooter's sister was said to have been escorted away by police. Earlier she had said: 'My brother should never have a gun.' .

 Another one of those accounts that focuses on hand-wringing, but fails to ask--much less answer--some significant questions about this SLAUGHTER of two women and one girl (the killer's 7-year-old daughter)--and the critical wounding of anther girl (the 12-year-old daughter who managed to call 911 after being shot in the head.)

Notice that the two women who were murdered were the killer daddy's girlfriend and the killer daddy's girlfriend' mother. There was NO MOTHER in the home.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MOTHER? Was she deceased? If so, from natural causes? Did she "disappear"? Was she stripped of custody by this violent scumbag?

We know that the father has a HISTORY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, even though the girlfriend's family claims to be ignorant of that fact. So the mother' s fate is a significant question.

And given that this killer dad had a history of domestic violence, who allowed him to have any access to these kids at all? And I can't help but wonder whether JONATHON WALKER was a custodial father, though this account--like most accounts of killer fathers--refuses to acknowledge or discuss the father's custodial "rights" and how those "rights" allowed him access to his murder victims.

NEW YORK (AP) -- In the quiet of a pre-dawn Saturday on a dead-end street, a father came home and shot his family in their heads, leaving women in three generations dead and a wounded 12-year-old girl calling 911, police said.

"What I did, I cannot come back from," Jonathon Walker told his brother by phone soon afterward, police said. And Walker did not come back - police said he killed himself in his car on a desolate street a few miles away, ending a burst of violence that stunned relatives who said the family hadn't shown signs of trouble.

The 34-year-old security guard had killed his 7-year-old daughter, Kayla Walker; his 31-year-old girlfriend, Shantai Hale; and Hale's mother, Viola Warren, 62. His and Hale's older daughter, whom a relative identified as Christina Walker, was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Investigators were trying to trace Walker's movements before the shooting as relatives struggled to comprehend shootings that struck them as inexplicable.

"I can't believe this happened. I can't believe this happened," Doreen Warren, the eldest victim's mother, sobbed by phone.

While Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said police had taken reports for domestic incidents at the home in 2005 and 2006 for "nominal matters" and Walker had been arrested twice in now-sealed cases, relatives said they weren't aware of any family strife or concerns about Walker.

"There was no indication of anything that would remotely make him do this," Wendell Warren, Viola Warren's brother, said as he wiped tears from his eyes outside the home on a suburban-style street in Queens, near a park and John F. Kennedy International Airport. Warren had fixed a broken boiler at the home just last week.

"We'll be baffled for years," he said.

Doreen Warren said Walker had joined in a pleasant family gathering at Christmas and her daughter and granddaughter never complained to her about him. She said she had spoken to Viola Warren, who worked at the airport, just two days ago.

"Nobody even dreamed of anything like this," added Silford Warren, another of Viola Warren's brothers.

The bloody scene unfolded suddenly and quickly - Walker showed up to the home at 5:38 a.m., and his 12-year-old daughter called 911 a few minutes afterward to report that her father had shot the family, Boyce said. When officers arrived three minutes later, Walker was gone.

They searched for his SUV and found it within hours, with Walker's body and a .45-caliber gun inside, Boyce said.

The victims were found on the home's floor, he said.

Christina underwent surgery later Saturday, but "she's always tough. She's determined to live," Wendell Warren said. His mother called Christina and her slain sister "two beautiful girls, sweet girls."

As police sought Walker, Doreen Walker woke up at her home elsewhere in New York City. She turned on the TV to hear violent news, and then had the shock of realizing it concerned her own family.

"You see these things on television," she said, "and you never know when they're going to hit home."

PORT LAVACA — Investigators say deputies were twice called to a South Texas home on child custody issues the night before a woman and her three young children were found dead inside, but a motive behind the killings remains unclear.

Jonathan Camacho remained jailed Friday on a murder charge in the death of his 23-year-old wife, Dulce Cumpean-Camacho, and capital murder charges in the deaths of the three children: 4-year-old son Zavier Camacho, 1-year-old Sierra Camacho and 3-month-old Faith Camacho.

Calhoun County Sheriff George Aleman said deputies were twice summoned Sunday night to a home in Port Lavaca on child custody issues, The Victoria Advocate reported. But early Monday, firefighters were called to a fire at a one-room shed where the family lived. The four bodies were found in the debris.

“Initial reports from family members were that people were inside the residence,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Deputies, assisted by Texas Rangers, later determined the deaths were homicides. Preliminary results from autopsies determined that the victims were stabbed, according to a statement released Thursday.

The home was on a compound where other relatives also lived.

“We knew (Jonathan) loved them. If we would have thought they weren’t safe, we would have made him leave,” said Yesica Cumpean, 25, the slain woman’s sister.

An arrest warrant was sealed by a judge for 30 days at the request of law enforcement, the newspaper reported.

Bell, Florida shooting: Grandfather killed daughter, 6 kids and self, police say

A grandfather shot and killed his daughter and her six children Thursday in the town of Bell, Florida before committing suicide after police arrived at the scene, authorities said.

The children ranged in age from three months to 10 years old, Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert D. Schultz III told reporters at an evening press conference.

Schultz identified the suspect as Don C. Spirit, 51, a white male. The sheriff said Spirit had placed a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. in which he "made reference to harming people and himself."

Schultz declined to speculate on a motive, citing the ongoing investigation, but he said Spirit had a criminal history, and that police had been called previously to his house.

"We're asking for prayers for this community and the victims involved," Schultz said.

In 2001, Spirit pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after he fatally shot his 8-year-old son in the head in a hunting accident, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Spirit, who also was convicted in 1998 for felony possession of marijuana, was sentenced to three years in prison for the shooting, the Sentinel added.

Bell is a town of 350 people about 30 miles west of Gainesville.

And sure enough, this "good" dad has a criminal record including substance addictions issues AND a history of child abuse (beatings, withholding food) that CPS workers ignored REPEATEDLY. As in AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES.

Meanwhile, the worst we are told about Mom is that she may have had an affair (or maybe not, depending on whether you believe this killer of five innocent children). Otherwise, everybody reports she seems like a very nice person.

Once again, we see what LIES the fathers rights people spread. In reality, fathers are not discriminated against. Even drug-addicted, violent fathers with a criminal record get full custody--only to kill the kids, because it was about control anyway. And how CPS and the courts collude in these crimes.

South Carolina child protection workers visited the family of a man accused of killing his five children at least a dozen times since 2011 in response to reports of abuse and neglect, state records released show.

The children, aged 1 to 8, said father Timothy Ray Jones Jr., 32, spanked them and made them do push-ups for punishment, but they did not appear afraid of him, according to workers, who did not remove the children from his care.

In notes about their most recent visit on August 7, social workers said Jones, a divorced father with legal custody of the children, seemed overwhelmed. However, after investigating a report that he was beating the children and not feeding them enough, workers did not find them to be in immediate danger.

Police say the children were already dead by the time South Carolina authorities learned on Monday that the children's grandmother in Mississippi had reported them missing after they did not show up for a planned visit.

Following his arrest on unrelated charges in Mississippi on Saturday, police said Jones confessed to the slayings and led them to his children's decomposing bodies, which he had wrapped in garbage bags and dumped near a rural logging road in Alabama. Authorities have not said how the kids were killed.

Jones is expected to be arrested on murder charges after being returned to South Carolina on Thursday.

He likely killed the children soon after he picked them up from school and day care in late August, Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty has said.

Jones, who worked for Intel at its office in Columbia, South Carolina, was also possibly accused of other unrelated criminal acts before.

In 2002, a Timothy R. Jones with the same birth date was sentenced in McHenry County, Illinois, to prison time for charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, theft, burglary, forgery and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He served 18 months behind bars, including time spent in county jail, before getting released on parole from prison in 2003, according to Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer.

Records from South Carolina's Department of Social Services, which has been criticised by lawmakers in the past of mishandling child welfare cases, show the agency had long been aware of the Jones family. Child welfare workers began visiting the family at their Leesville home in fall 2011 when there were only three children, and continued through their mother's last two pregnancies, as well as after Jones reported his wife had left him "for a younger man."

The visits stopped for a time after fall 2012, when workers said Jones took the children to Mississippi, where he had relatives.

The state resumed contact in May after a report that Jones was beating the children, records show. Jones said he had grabbed a child by the back of the shirt and lifted him up because he destroyed his brother's toy.

Caseworkers concluded there was not enough evidence to arrest Jones.

1) Some judge gave a drug-addicted, deeply mentally ill, and demented father custody of five young children because?

2) Some judge gave a drug-addicted, deeply violent, and abusive father with custody of five children because?

Either way, we're not told who gave this piece of sh** custody or why the mother was shoved out of their lives. Probably just another example of an abusive and violent daddy (with an enabler father) who set out to punish/control the mother by stripping her of her kids, and then killed the kids like so many rabid dogs.

The bodies of five young children were found in the woods of Alabama on Tuesday, and police said they are believed to be siblings who were reported missing in South Carolina a week ago.

The children’s father, Timothy Ray Jones Jr., 32, was in custody in Mississippi, where police stopped his blood-soaked Cadillac Escalade over the weekend, a prosecutor told NBC News.

“God help me and God help my son,” Jones Jr.’s father told NBC News after learning that police had found the five bodies in an undeveloped clearing off Highway 10 in Wilcox County, Alabama.

His son has not been charged in connection with the deaths of the children, who ranged in age from 1 to 8. He was being held on a charge of driving under the influence while the investigation continued, said Daniel Jones, the district attorney of Smith County, Mississippi.

The DA said it was likely he would be prosecuted in South Carolina.

“What we believe has occurred is he killed the children in South Carolina and drove to Alabama with them,” he said.

He said that the father, who was allegedly high on synthetic marijuana when he was detained in Mississippi, made incriminating statements and gave investigators the information that led them to the bodies in Alabama. Notes referring to violence against the children were also found, he said.

“I wouldn’t say he made a full confession, but he said enough,” the DA said.

Asked about a motive, the prosecutor said the suspect — who was described as a computer genius — claimed the children were plotting to kill him.

“I think he probably just went mad,” he said.

Timothy Jones Sr. said the last time anyone had seen his son at work or the children at school in Lexington County, South Carolina, was Aug. 28.

The six of them were supposed to travel to Mississippi for a family gathering on Labor Day weekend but never arrived, he said. He said that on Sept. 3, he made a missing persons report.

Meanwhile, the mother of the children also reported them missing on Sept. 3 after she could not reach her ex-husband, who had custody of the kids, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones Jr. was not heard from until Sept. 6 when he was stopped at a checkpoint, where he encountered a sheriff’s deputy who “had been around long enough to know the smell of death,” the DA said. “He picked up on it immediately.”

The deputies opened the doors of the Escalade and “saw he had taken bleach and poured it all over the back of the Escalade,” the DA said. “You could tell where it bleached the carpet but the blood was still there and there were maggots. They took him into custody at that time and as he came off the synthetic marijuana he began to talk about what happened.”

The elder Jones said his son had no history of violence or emotional problems. He had primary custody of the children after his divorce was finalized a year ago.

“He’s been a really good dad,” he said shortly before getting the tragic news from Alabama.

New details emerge in Saco murder-suicide: ‘She was afraid of him’

Heather Smith’s sister-in-law describes a marriage fraught with difficulties, including alcoholism, financial problems and controlling behavior.

Heather Smith was afraid of her husband and frightened that he would take custody of their children if she ended their relationship, a family member said Tuesday.

The relationship of Heather and Joel Smith, whose bodies were found Sunday in Saco along with those of their three children in a murder-suicide, was complex and fraught with difficulties, said Jennifer Montez, Heather Smith’s sister-in-law.

Montez said that since Heather and Joel Smith began dating, he had a tendency to control the relationship, a habit that intensified when the couple married in 2010 and had two children together. Montez, 36, of Laveen, Arizona, is married to Heather Smith’s brother and described how she and other relatives would receive panicked, late-night phone calls from her sister-in-law.

“She was afraid of him,” Montez said. “And she was afraid of losing her children. So she actually sacrificed her happiness and her life because she was not willing to be a part-time mom, she wasn’t willing to see her kids only once every three weeks.”

There were other demons that plagued the couple, factors that Montez said contributed to the family’s strife.

“I’m not going to lie, they were both alcoholics,” Montez said. “That’s where some of the money problems happened.”

Montez, in a nearly hour-long interview with the Portland Press Herald, disputed the assertion that her sister-in-law was a drug addict, and that allegations of her opioid use only emerged about two weeks before the couple’s death. For the majority of their relationship, Montez said, Heather Smith maintained the family’s only stable income while her husband sought construction work in Arizona, and later in Maine, often only securing sporadic employment.

Much of their disharmony, and Heather Smith’s fear, centered on the raising of their three children, Montez said.

Heather’s oldest son, Jason Montez, 12, was born in Arizona before Joel and Heather met; his biological father has never been in the picture. During that time, Heather lived with her mother, who cared for Jason when Heather worked.

When Heather and Joel got together, they moved into an apartment within a matter of months, according to Montez.

The Montez clan, with several branches of the family within about a 30-minute drive of one another in cities around Phoenix, stayed in close touch. Poolside barbecues and extended family meals were at least weekly occurrences. Everyone knew what was going on with everyone else.

At first, the family thought Joel was good for Heather, and that she seemed happy. The families started to get to know each other when Heather announced in 2007 that she was expecting a child with Joel. They named him Noah, who was 7 at the time of his death.

When the baby was born, the Montez family tried to welcome Joel into the fold, but he was distrustful, Montez said.

He restricted the family’s access to Noah, asserting more control than he did with Jason, who was raised with help from the extended Montez family before Joel met Heather, Montez said.

Visits with Noah were allowed only at Heather’s and Joel’s home; family members were not allowed to take him overnight, or for day trips or car rides. Heather also was noticeably absent from holiday gatherings and family parties.

“He said he was a better parent than her, even though she already had a child and he didn’t,” Montez said. “If we bought (their children) a toy and he didn’t like it, they couldn’t play with it.”

Although he was holding three jobs in the days before he used a 12-gauge shotgun to kill his wife and their children July 26, Joel struggled to maintain steady employment, and it was on Heather’s steady income that the family often scraped by, Montez said.

“Unfortunately, they continued their relationship and had another child, even though they had so much turmoil,” she said.

Montez believes the couple’s move to New England was spurred by a 2009 vacation to see Joel’s father, who lives in Maine. It was a rare getaway from parenthood, Montez said – Jason stayed with Joel’s mother.

“We were not allowed to have him,” she said.

The visit was recorded in an album of Facebook photos, in which a pregnant Heather posed for pictures in Old Orchard Beach with her husband, and at an arcade. It was fall, and the leaves were turning brilliant shades of red and orange. When they came back to Arizona, Montez said, the idea to move to Maine percolated.

“They kept talking about it, ‘We’re thinking about moving there,’ ” Montez recalled. “I said, ‘Your problems are going to follow you.’

“ In hindsight, Montez believes the move to New England was designed to cut Heather off from the support network and familiarity of Arizona.

“He moved her to Maine to isolate her so she would feel she had no resources and would feel trapped,” Montez said. “He isolated her from all her family and all her friends.”

Once they settled in Saco, Heather found a position in a doctor’s office and Joel again sought work in construction.

Both parents were drinking heavily every night, and the stress began to affect Heather’s work performance, Montez said. Heather was getting in trouble, and managers gave her fewer hours. Then she lost the job.

When she was fired less than a year ago, Joel found positions as a handyman for the RiverView Apartments complex where they lived, at a separate apartment building, and working part time at Target.

The Montez family knew Heather and Joel were struggling. The couple asked to borrow money from family members. Heather, who was unhappy in the relationship, told Montez that she felt powerless to escape, despite repeated offers by her family to help her do just that.

Early in 2014, she told Montez about a plan to use a portion of the couple’s forthcoming tax return to take her children and get an apartment for herself.

The time came, the money arrived, but Heather’s plan never materialized.

The last time Montez heard news of her sister-in-law was July 15, when Joel called Montez’s husband to tell them that Heather was checked into a hospital because she was apparently in withdrawal from opioid use.

The family was alarmed, but Joel sounded calm, Montez said. He told them he had taken the children to his father’s house, and removed his guns from the residence. He took Heather to the hospital, and was looking for rehabilitation facilities where she could get clean.

Montez tried to help, looking up names of clinics in the area, but couldn’t get in touch with her brother-in-law.

Two weeks later, Montez learned they were all dead.

The madman who tried to escape to his native Mexico after butchering his wife and young daughters in their Queens apartment in January was indicted on three counts of first-degree murder Thursday morning as his still-grieving in-laws faced him down in court.

Miguel Mejias-Ramos, 28, wearing a gray sweatshirt and matching sweatpants, stared downward and said nothing as his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf in Queens Criminal Court.

Luz Amarado, the mother of the sicko’s late wife — and grandmother of his children — fixed the accused killer with an icy stare throughout the proceeding.

Mejias-Ramos fatally knifed his wife, Deisy Garcia, 21, on Jan. 18 because he was suspicious of photos he found on her Facebook page and phone, cops said.

The accused killer then stabbed to death 3-year-old Daniella and 1-year-old Yoselin — because he didn’t have a car seat to take them with him before fleeing, cops said.

Outside court, Amarado bitterly lashed out at her son-in-law.

“He used to be a part of my family. He was my daughter’s husband, and the father of my grandkids. Now he’s the person who took them away,” she said, speaking in Spanish.

The family’s lawyer, Roger Asmar, called her a lost soul since the killings last Jan. 18. “She feels horrible.

She told me that she walks around the streets not knowing what to do or where to go. She’s simply lost without her daughter and grandkids,” Asmar said.

In court, prosecutor Denise Tirino said cops who brought the suspect back to New York after he was busted in Texas asked him what he was thinking about. “God and jail,” he replied, she said.

The defendant’s lawyer, Michael Anastasiou, asked Justice Kenneth C. Holder to place his client in protective custody and on suicide watch, and that he continue to receive medical treatment, though he did not specify for what.

Anastasiou did not request bail, and Mejias-Ramos will be returned to Rikers until his next court date on May 21.

Mejias-Ramos confessed to detectives that he used five knives to viciously stab Garcia, who had gone to cops last May 30 and made a report in Spanish saying she feared her husband would kill her and her daughters.

A complaint Deisy Garcia filed against her husband that the NYPD failed to immediately translate.

Cops never translated the report, and her prediction later came true, prompting the NYPD to order last month that reports of domestic violence written in foreign languages must be immediately translated to protect potential victims.

The family is planning to file a civil suit against the NYPD next week, Asmar said.

Mejias-Ramos is facing life in prison without a possibility of parole if convicted of the first-degree murder charges.

GEORGETOWN: A man in the South American country of Guyana has being held on suspicion of killing his wife and four of his five children by locking them inside their home and setting it on fire, police said on Saturday.

Businessman Lennox La Cruz, 50, was arrested in the northwest region of Port Kaituma near Venezuela, authorities said. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Police said they were alerted to the incident by a fifth child, a 12-year-old girl, who went to a police station and told officers that her parents were arguing and that her father was threatening to burn down their home.

Police said that when they arrived at the house, it was already on fire and that they couldn't enter because of a locked iron door.

Authorities said police officers and nearby residents formed a bucket brigade but were unable to put out the fire.

The victims were identified as Lurlene La Cruz, 39, her two daughters, ages 14 and 3, and two sons, ages 8 and 1.

The killings occurred late on Friday in a farming and gold mining community where La Cruz was well known.

A New York woman brutally stabbed to death last month along with her two young daughters had warned police months before that she feared for their safety, but her warning went unheeded - because it was in Spanish and never translated.

Deisy Garcia, an immigrant from Guatemala, filled out the state-mandated domestic-incident report in her native language after calling officers to her Jamaica apartment on May 30 to say her husband, Miguel Mejia-Ramos, 29, had assaulted her, according to police sources.

In the report, Garcia, 21, wrote that she was afraid Mejia-Ramos, 29, was going to kill her as well as their kids because she loved them so much.

She called 911 on Mejia-Ramos again on November 28 and filed a second report, although she didn’t repeat her concerns about being killed.

Neither report was translated into English by either the patrol officers or the Domestic Violence Unit, until after Garcia and her daughters - Daniela, 2, and Yoselin, 1 - were fatally stabbed on January 18, reports the New York Post.

The victim’s family have hit out at the NYPD over their lax approach to processing Deisy Garcia’s complaint.

‘When someone comes to them with a problem but only speaks Spanish, find someone who speaks Spanish.’

‘I’m in so much pain,’ mom, Luzmina Alvarado told the Post.

‘I know she contacted them and told them he kicked her and abused her, but the police told her they needed to see proof of the abuse.

‘I told the cops, "Now that my daughter is dead, you’re hunting for this man like dogs, but if you did more earlier - if you had listened to my daughter - she might be alive today.'"

In the wake of the tragedy, NYPD has said it is carrying out a review of procedure and officers have been reminded that reports made in other languages must also be translated into English.

The NYPD is also considering using computer software to automatically translate the reports. Miguel Mejia-Ramos told New York City prosecutors that was rifling through his wife's phone and Facebook page on Sunday night and snapped when he saw an image of her with another man

Mejia-Ramos was placed on suicide watch after being arraigned late last month. Prosecutors say he told investigators he killed his children because he didn't have car seats to take them on the lam.

An illegal immigrant, he was arrested in Texas en route to Mexico after authorities tracked his cellphone.

Authorities say detectives recovered five knives with what appeared to be blood on them.

The suspect told police he tried to kill himself after slaying his family 'but couldn't do it.'

After his arrest, Miguel Mejia-Ramos told New York City prosecutors that was rifling through his wife's phone and Facebook page and snapped when he saw an image of her with another man.

He then grabbed a knife and stabbed 21-year-old Deisy Garcia, before hugging and kissing his two young daughters - two-year-old Daniela and one-year-old Yoselin - before brutally killing them too.

Mejia-Ramos faces first-degree murder charges.

The victims were found dead in their apartment after friends noticed they hadn't attended church.

Garcia's uncle stumbled upon the gruesome scene. All three had suffered multiple stab wounds and sources said that two bloody knives were left in the two rooms where the bodies were found.

A friend, Diana Villa, told the New York Post that Garcia had been petrified of Ramos and had even asked their local pastor for help - but that she was scared of calling police because she was an illegal immigrant from Guatemala.

Villa said she had witnessed a violent fight between the couple at a recent baby shower after Ramos blamed her for having no beer at the party, which was at the church.

Police officers had visited the residence for domestic violence complaints against Ramos last November and May, but he was not arrested on either occasion.

Garcia’s uncle Ramon Chuc, 37, recalled discovering the bodies with his two sons, ages 12 and 10, after they returned to the home after playing football outside.

'My 12-year-old son, Rene, went inside the room and saw my niece on the floor,' Chuc sobbed. 'After that, I... saw the two babies are covered with a blanket. I take it off and see them.'

All three were pronounced dead at the scene with stab wounds to the chest.

The apartment, which is above a drug store, was cordoned off by police.

‘She was a quiet but happy person. She always had a smile on her face. She was a good mom,’ Mario Sanchez, 16, told the Daily News.

The "suspected" killer dad is identified as MARTIN GODIN.

What is not particularly well-identified in this article is that this a child custody-related set of murders. Notice that Daddy "allegedly" killed the girls in his own home (during what, I suspect, was court-ordered access), while his ex-wife, the mother of the girls, was killed elsewhere.

Once again, a crime that might have been preventable if this father had been denied access to his victims.

Wonder if Dad had a background of domestic violence (which was apparently ignored by the courts in granting him his custody/visitation "rights).

Godin remains in critical condition in hospital and Sûrété du Québec Sgt. Richard Gagné said that investigators have not been able to question him about the circumstances surrounding the events of last weekend in the Chaudière-Appalaches area south of Quebec City.

Godin, 54, was found unconscious in his home in Saint-Isidore at midnight Saturday. His two daughters were with him in the house at the time. The eldest, Medora Godin, 13, was declared dead on the scene.

SQ officers went to Godin’s home after a grisly discovery at the home of his former wife on Saturday night.

The bodies of Nancy Samson, 44, and her boyfriend Benoît Daigle, 39, were found at 8:45 p.m. outside a chalet in Ste-Croix-de-Lotbinière, about 70 kilometres away. Samson managed to call 911 before she died.

Sergeant Jean Tremblay with the SQ said that all the victims died a violent death, possibly from gunfire. Godin is the prime suspect in the killings.

ROBBINS, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago man shot and killed his wife and two of his children, even following his daughter outside where he shot her a second time and dragged her body back into the house, police said Monday.

The man, 43-year-old Michael Worsham, was found dead inside the home. Police said he did not have gunshot wounds and the cause of his death was not yet clear. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said the bodies would be examined Tuesday.

The grisly slayings happened late Sunday in the small city of Robbins, just south of Chicago.

Robbins Police Chief Mitchell Davis said Monday that Worsham first shot his 17-year-old son, Steven, in the head in the kitchen before pulling his wife, 42-year-old Michelle Ollie, out of bed and fatally shooting her.

He shot his 15-year-old daughter, Trisdion Worsham, in the back as she tried to flee, then went outside, shot her again and shot at witnesses before dragging the girl's body back into the house, police said.

Worsham's 14-year-old stepson told police he tried to wrestle the gun away, then was told he could leave if he stopped fighting, Davis said. The boy told police he grabbed his 5-year-old nephew and ran to a neighbor's home. The girl was shot as she tried to follow them out the door.

Authorities said the couple had been married for 12 years and there was no record of domestic violence at the home.

Police described arriving at a horrific scene at the brick house around 10:40 p.m. Sunday.

"Seeing the very tiny house just covered in blood, I don't even know how to describe it," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said at a news conference.

Davis said police don't yet have a motive for the slayings.

"I'm a father. I cannot imagine what could bring someone to such a dark place where they would believe that they need to take the lives of their entire family, let alone children," Davis said. "There's nothing that you can say to describe this. You know, there's nothing you can say to try to console this 14-year-old who saw his family murdered in front of his eyes."

Man Arrested in the Killings of His Wife and Children

A man wanted in the stabbing deaths of his wife and two young daughters over the weekend has been arrested in Texas, the New York Police Department said on Tuesday.

The man, identified as Miguel Mejia-Ramos, 28, was apprehended on Monday night on Interstate 10 in Schulenburg, midway between Houston and San Antonio, the police said. He was in a 2001 Chevrolet van with New York commercial license plates, the police said.

Mr. Mejia-Ramos was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for stab wounds that did not appear life-threatening, the police said. It was not clear how he was injured nor was it clear when he would be brought back to New York to face charges.

After the killings, the United States Marshals Service learned that Mr. Mejia-Ramos might be headed toward Mexico and sent messages and descriptions of him and his vehicle to law enforcement agencies along his possible routes, Kevin R. Kamrowski, a spokesman for the Marshals Service, said.

A Texas state trooper spotted Mr. Mejia-Ramos’s van and was aided by members of the Schulenburg Police Department, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Marshals Service in making the arrest. As of Tuesday evening, he was being held in the Fayette County Jail.

“It was a pretty quick little grab,” Alfredo Perez, another spokesman for the Marshals Service, said. “There was no drama.”

The police had been searching for Mr. Mejia-Ramos since his wife, Deisy Garcia, 21, and their two daughters, a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old, were found dead in the bedroom of their home in Jamaica, Queens, on Sunday evening. All were stabbed multiple times, the police said. The children were found in their beds, and Ms. Garcia on the floor in a separate bedroom.

The police have given no indication of a possible motive in the killings. Mabel Henriquez, a friend of Ms. Garcia, said she complained last fall that she had been abused, without providing details. And the police said that last year they responded to two domestic-violence calls at the family’s home on Sutphin Boulevard, though no arrests were made.

Ms. Garcia, who danced with her church group and, according to her Facebook page, was a student at York College in Queens, and met Mr. Mejia-Ramos in the United States after she moved from Totonicapán, Guatemala. The family shared an apartment with her uncle and aunt and their two children, one of whom discovered the bodies.
