A 21-year-old Macon father charged in the July 21 death of his 2-month-old son was denied bond Thursday.

Darrlyn Deshawn Jones, of Elkan Avenue, was jailed after he admitted to police he had “violent contact” with his son, Jayceon Davis. He is charged with murder and family violence-related aggravated assault.

He allegedly told police he struck the boy in the head with his hands using force and then, minutes later, struck him in the head repeatedly. He also has said he dropped or threw the child “with force” down onto a bed, according to arrest warrants.

Prosecutor Melanie Bruchet said Jones’ grandmother called for an ambulance after hearing the baby cry.

The baby later died at a local hospital. Medical tests showed he sustained severe brain trauma, according to Macon police.

In arguing for a bond to be set, Jones’ lawyer, Mark Beberman, said Jones doesn’t have a criminal record and although he’s not employed now, he has plans to go to commercial driving school and has worked as a photo technician at Walgreens in the past.

In the Thursday bond hearing in Bibb County Superior Court, victim advocate Meredith Howell said the baby’s mother is one of the most distraught people she’s ever spoken to on the phone.

“She could barely talk to me,” Howell said.

Judge Howard Simms expressed concerns that Jones might try to intimidate witnesses if he’s released on bond.

Jones is being held at the Bibb County jail.
