Nearly three months after his child died, a Battle Creek father is charged with his baby's murder.
A warrant was issued today, and Shawn Brown, 25, will be arraigned today on one count of open murder.
He is charged in the Jan. 22 shaking of his son, 5-month-old Shawn Brown Jr.. The infant died two days later at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek police have alleged the cause of death was injures suffered when he was shaken by his father.
Brown was charged with child abuse but the case was delayed several times while police and prosecutors awaited results of an autopsy on the child. Earlier this month the child abuse charge was dismissed but reissued the same day.
Brown, who has been held in the county jail, appeared today before Calhoun County District Judge John Hallacy for a preliminary examination on the child abuse charge, but it once again was dismissed.
Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Buscher told the judge he finally received the autopsy report and was prepared to issue a murder charge against Brown. Buscher then moved to dismiss the child abuse charge despite objections from Brown's attorney.
