I'm not sure how many of you realize this, but there is a strong strain in the fathers rights movement, especially in the conservative strains, that denies that shaken baby syndrome (abusive head trauma) even exists. It's sort of similar to their usual denial of science: that evolution doesn't exist, that Adam and Eve ran around with the dinosaurs, that the bodies of raped women have some mystical capacity to "shut down" a pregnancy.
This case illustrates how bogus that really is. As is usual in these cases, we have a male caretaker, a father (that's one reason the fathers' rights people want to deny that shaken baby syndrome exists. It's because virtually every study on the matter shows that men are the main perpetrators, particularly fathers, even though men represent a minority of active infant caretakers overall).
This father ADMITS he violently shook the baby, and then DID NOTHING in terms of seeking out medical care, even when he could tell something was "wrong" with the baby. As we see in these cases again and again, no medical care was sought until the WORKING MOM CAME HOME.
Despite all the fluffy articles on middle-class daddies who turn stay-at-home, there are a substantial number of dudes like BRENNAN KNOWLES. Short-tempered, violent (often deadbeat) men who become enraged over normal infant crying. Meanwhile, mothers are denied decent maternity leaves so they can take care of their babies. So this is what we're left with. Moms trying to pick up the pieces after a full day at work. And babies dying as a result.
Are some men capable of doing infant care? Certainly. But there are many who are not, and we need to stop pretending that these often unemployed/unemployable deadbeat dads are the same as a nurturing mother. They're not. Typically they make bad caretakers for the same reasons they can't get or keep a job: because they're "easily frustrated" goons.

Man denied bail request in Orlando shaken-baby case

Brennan Knowles, an Orlando man accused of fatally shaking his crying baby in 2010, will continue to await trial behind bars after a judge on Tuesday rejected his latest request for bail.
Knowles, 25, has been in jail since November. He faces charges of aggravated child abuse, second-degree murder and aggravated manslaughter of a child in the death of Camron Knowles.
Authorities were called to Knowles' home in January 2010 after the boy's mother arrived home from work and realized something was wrong. Camron was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition and put on a ventilator.
Knowles told investigators he had gone to check on the 4-month-old hours earlier because the child was screaming. According to police reports, Knowles confessed that he shook the boy.
He also admitted that "when he checked on the victim [after shaking him], he knew something was wrong but did not think to seek medical attention for the victim," a police report states.
Knowles was initially arrested on abuse and neglect charges and released on bond, but he was jailed again later after Camron died from his injuries in June 2011 and prosecutors added murder and manslaughter charges.
At a bond hearing Tuesday, Assistant Public Defender Felix Felicier argued that Knowles doesn't have a record and has never missed a court date. Family members testified he'd have a stable place to live with a family friend if released.
"He showed that he had respect for the judicial system," Felicier told Circuit Judge Heather Rodriguez. "He has no prior criminal history."
However, prosecutor William Jay countered that nothing substantial has changed since Knowles was last denied bond and the evidence against him is strong.
The brain-damaged child died, Jay said, "after suffering horribly for a year and a half." Rodriguez denied the motion. The case is set for trial in December. Knowles faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged.

Izsel Thomas is being held on a $1 million bond for a first-degree felony charge of murder. Details were limited as of press time Tuesday evening, but more information is expected to be released following Thomas’ initial hearing today.
Midland police and firefighters were dispatched to the Ranchland Apartments on the 1200 block of Wadley Avenue at about 6 p.m. June 4 in reference to an accidental drowning. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that 8-month-old Alston Thomas had died, said Persephone Dakopolos, Midland’s public information officer.
An investigation began and the child’s body was sent to a coroner for an autopsy. The autopsy revealed that Alston Thomas died as a result of blunt-force trauma to the base of his head and neck as the child came into contact with a curved object, Dakopolos said of the autopsy results.
The report concluded the injuries were inconsistent with Thomas’ story and were more severe than injuries caused by a fall.
A warrant was issued and Thomas was arrested without incident on Tuesday. Thomas is being held at the Midland County Central Detention Center. His $1 million bond was set by Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Judge Billy Johnson.
If convicted of the first-degree felony charge of murder, Thomas could face between five and 99 years in prison. R

A man accused of throwing his 2-year-old daughter against a wall told his wife, doctors and police different stories about how she got her head injuries, a court has been told.
In his closing today, Crown prosecutor Phil Hamlin told the High Court at Auckland that Kefu Ikamanu was so angry at his daughter Seini that he threw her against a wall and stomped on her.
She died eight months later in Auckland's Starship Hospital.
Ikamanu has denied murdering his daughter, injuring with reckless disregard and causing grievous bodily harm.
Mr Hamlin said Ikamanu was looking after Seini and her younger brother at their Beach Haven home while his wife Sela was at work on March 24, 2010.
He later told Sela he had been talking with Seini when suddenly she had a seizure.
"So all of a sudden, she is having a seizure," Mr Hamlin said. "There is no mention of grabbing, pulling or hitting the wall at all."
He told a police officer later that night how Seini had been pushed down the stairs by her little brother the day before she suddenly had a seizure.
The day after Seini was rushed to hospital, Starship's child protection team head Dr Patrick Kelly talked to Ikamanu and his wife about what happened.
Dr Kelly said Ikamanu told him that on the night, Seini had been playing with her brother and went over to the couch in the living room.
Ikamanu told the doctor that he noticed Seini's eyes were crossed. He grabbed Seini and took her clothes off before running her to the shower.
"Ikamanu knew full well then what he had done and he wasn't going to tell," Mr Hamlin said.
"He knew what had happened and he wasn't going to say, even when the doctor was telling him: 'We need to know'. He's protecting himself."
Again, Mr Hamlin said there was no mention of grabbing or of Seini's head banging against the wall.
The following day Ikamanu agreed to talk to police. Mr Hamlin said Detective David Paea picked a teary-eyed Ikamanu up at the hospital.
Mr Paea said Ikamanu told him he wanted to tell the truth and asked about what kind of jail sentence he was likely to get. "
... Ikamannu tells [the detective] he grabbed Seini and threw her and her head hit the wall."
Mr Hamlin said that description best fitted the medical evidence about Seini's head injuries.
But later, in front of the DVD recorder, Ikamanu told Mr Paea that he had grabbed Seini's hand, she fell away somehow and her head hit the wall.
"I suggest to you that what has been suggested doesn't fit at all because he's not telling police the full story," Mr Hamlin said.
He referred the jurors to medical experts who have given evidence that the force required for the head injuries was comparable to a car crash or a fall from a building.
"He has told different versions to different people at different times."
Ikamanu's lawyer Simon Lance will close the case for the defence later this afternoon.

Notice that UNNAMED dad is also accused of beating "his partner" (i.e. the mother I assume), but despite being a victim of his violence, she and the children have been separated from each other anyway. The 33-year-old father of six appeared in the Auckland District Court yesterday on 39 charges relating to alleged violent offending against all his children, the youngest of whom were nine-and-a-half week old twins.
Lawyer Cam Robertson said if his client's name was released, it would impair his right to a fair trial because of the "current climate in regards to allegations of this nature".
He also said the children would immediately be identifiable and the three who were attending school would be at risk of shame or embarrassment among their peers.
Judge Anne Kiernan also declined Fairfax Media's application to view the 27-page police summary of facts, which she described as containing significant detail about the accusations.
Child Youth and Family northern regional director Grant Bennett said the children had been placed with caregivers and were "safe and well".
The man was remanded in custody with his name suppression to continue until his next appearance in three weeks time.

Dad who breaks leg, inflicts rib injuries on 16-day-old newborn excused as "inexperienced" (Bradford, England)
The system does not take abusive fathers or the safety of children seriously.
The courts certainly don't.
And neither does the media when they excuse a father who inflicted MULTIPLE injuries and a fracture on a 16-day old newborn as "inexperienced."
Don't tell me that you broke this baby's leg because a newborn infant "struggled" while you were changing a nappy (diaper). I say bullsh**.
And Daddy STILL got kid glove treatment even after lying about his abuse and causing the mother to lose all contact with her newborn son for SIX LONG MONTHS.
Of course all this doesn't keep the authorities from STILL treating the mother like a criminal even though she didn't commit any abuse. Typical.

The mother of a baby boy whose father was spared jail for causing him multiple fractures says her son has been denied justice.
The 22-year-old man was sentenced to a suspended term of imprisonment at Bradford Crown Court yesterday for causing the 16-day-old infant grievous bodily harm.
The court heard that the man, of the Holme Wood area of Bradford, was an inexperienced father who broke the baby’s leg in several places while changing his nappy.
The child also suffered rib injuries when his father squeezed him.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the baby, was sentenced to 51 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
He must perform 150 hours of unpaid work and a medium-level probation service activity requirement for 30 days, with 12 months’ supervision.
The court heard that it was accepted that he did not intend to injure his baby son. The boy was struggling when his nappy was being changed and his leg was twisted.
But after the case, the child’s angry mother said her former partner should have been jailed.
The 23-year-old woman, who lives in another part of Bradford with her son, said she was not allowed to care for him for six months while social services investigated the case.
“It is just horrible,” she said. “They treated me as badly as him. He has not been punished any more than I have been.”
The woman said the child, now more than a year old, had made a good recovery.
But she still could not understand how his injuries were caused.
“I don’t feel I have got justice for my son. I cried when I heard the sentence,” she said.
“I have known of an adult who got into a fight and got two years for Section 20 GBH. I don’t know how he can break a baby’s bones and get away with it.”
The woman said her ordeal was made worse because the baby’s father did not admit his guilt for some time.
“Social workers are still coming to see me and I have not done anything,” she said.

Custodial dad arrested after going on drug binge with 11-year-old son (Canton, Georgia)
So who gave this drug-addicted father custody of this child? Even at the age of 43, he's apparently incapable of independent living (he lives with his mother). He goes on a 3-day drug binge that went from house to house. During this binge, he drags his son along. He keeps his son out of school and doesn't feed him. And yet he has custody....WHY?
Mom lives out of state. That much we know.
Complete silence as far as why this methhead moron has custody, which is typical of the mainstream media. Was this a court-ordered situation?
Daddy's "19-year-old friend" is an "approved adult" for picking up this child? Puleeze. He sounds like an enabler.

Mr. Jason Cole, 43, was arrested on child cruelty and drug charges after deputies found he had allegedly been dragging his 11-year-old son from house to house while he goes on a drug binge, officials said. The father of a missing 11-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after deputies found that he had allegedly been on a drug binge while dragging the boy from house to house and not providing him enough food to eat.
Mr. Jason Cole, 43, of Canton, also kept the Sixes Elementary student out of school for three days, according to Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies.
Deputies began trying to find young Elijah Cole after he and his dad didn’t return to the Bridgemill home they share with his grandmother last Thursday, the sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said.
At the time, deputies had few details about the boy's whereabouts and feared he may be in danger.
They knew that last Thursday Elijah was picked up from school by Mr. Will Copes, an approved adult and Mr. Jason Cole’s 19-year-old friend.
“Elijah, his father Jason Cole and Will Copes stayed at a friend’s home in Cherokee County Friday night,” Lt. Baker said. “They have not been seen or heard from since then.”
Investigators thought they may be are traveling in Mr. Copes' 2002 Audi Station Wagon back to Mississippi where Mr. Cole and Mr. Copes used to reside or possibly to Tennessee where Elijah’s mother resides.
But Tuesday morning deputies found the 19-year-old and his station wagon at a U-Haul business in Canton.
Mr. Copes told deputies he dropped Elijah Cole and his dad at a location in Pickens, Lt. Baker said. Investigators immediately went to the location and found the boy and his dad who was taken in for questioning.
“Detectives determined through their investigation that Cole has been transporting his juvenile son from house to house staying in different locations since last Thursday,” Lt. Baker said.
“He kept his child from attending school for 3 days, is suspected of being on a drug binge during that time and has not provided adequate amounts of food to the boy.”
A search warrant for Mr. Cole's blood and urine was obtained and the preliminary results came back positive for marijuana and methamphetamine. Deputies arrested Mr. Cole, 43, for first-degree cruelty to children, reckless conduct and drug possession charges.
Elijah was placed in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services and his dad was being held at the Cherokee County jail on $43,000 bond.
Mom lives out of state. That much we know.

A search warrant for Mr. Cole's blood and urine was obtained and the preliminary results came back positive for marijuana and methamphetamine. Deputies arrested Mr. Cole, 43, for first-degree cruelty to children, reckless conduct and drug possession charges.
Elijah was placed in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services and his dad was being held at the Cherokee County jail on $43,000 bond.

A father who went on the rampage and killed his wife and two of their children before killing himself spared his one-year-old daughter in the second family slaughter to shock Germany in a few days.
The 69-year old architect dumped his baby girl at a hospital before returning to his Berlin home and killing his 28-year-old wife and their two sons aged three and six. He then killed himself. A suicide note was found.
"It is a family tragedy. We believe the family was heavily indebted," a police spokesman said.
The bodies were found by firefighters who broke into the house after worried neighbours became suspicious.
The children were found in their room. Police have not disclosed how they were killed.
"We can confirm that it is the child is the daughter of the dead woman. The girl was healthy and in good, clean condition," a spokesman for the hospital said.
The girl has been transferred to an orphanage.
The killing came just days after a mother and her two children had been killed in Nuess, near Düsseldorf.
A 35-year-old man, reportedly known for being a violent husband, allegedly shot dead his 26-year-old wife and their two children, aged four and eight.
The man is on the run and police consider him as dangerous and possibly armed.
"We need to get him as soon as possible," Guido Adler, head of the murder unit, said.
Police set a €1,500 (£1,200) reward for information that might lead to an arrest
