A Yorkville father has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to physically abusing his infant son and leaving him severely injured for life, Kendall County State's Attorney Eric Weis announced Monday.

John Burton Jr., 23, 2100 block of Bluebird Lane, was convicted of felony aggravated battery to a child stemming from an April 2013 incident at his home.

Prosecutors said on that day, Yorkville police responded to Burton's home for reports of a child in distress. Paramedics said the 7-week-old baby's mother had begun administering CPR, but the baby needed critical medical assistance.

Weis said the baby was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center following initial treatment at an Aurora hospital. Medical staff at Loyola observed multiple injuries, including bruising along the left cheek, eyelid, neck and ear, he said.

Weis said a CT scan revealed subdural hemorrhages and doctors also observed a mid-shaft femoral fracture on the child's leg. Doctors determined the injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

According to Weis, Burton, who was with the child at the time of the injuries, was interviewed by investigators and admitted to abusing his child.

As a result of the traumatic brain injury, the child now suffers from cerebral palsy and is blind, Weis said.

The cerebral palsy has caused him to have very poor muscle tone and he cannot control his body movements, he said.

Weis said the child is seen by eight different types of doctors, takes 12 different medications, attends 10 different therapies every week and is fed through a gastro-intestinal tube.

During Burton's sentencing, the child's mother read an emotional, four-page victim impact statement about the changes to her life and that of her small child.

"I will likely never hear him say "I love you Mom,'" she told Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann. "I will never see my once healthy son grow into the man he should have become. I can never see the world through my child's eyes because of your (Burton's) actions. (His) mind and body are locked into his own private jail cell."

Weis commended the efforts of the Yorkville Police Department and the medical personnel for their efforts in the case.

"Unfortunately, no sentence will allow this innocent child to lead a normal and healthy life due to the actions of John Burton," he said. " As his mother told the court, while his (Burton's) sentence will some day be served, this child will be serving a life sentence that no one should have to endure."

Burton will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his 18-year sentence.

FORT LEE — Authorities have upgraded charges against the father of a 5-month-old boy prosecutors say died after he was beaten.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in a statement Friday Yoseop Choi is now facing a charge of first-degree aggravated manslaughter.

The Fort Lee man is being held in Bergen County Jail on $1 million bail. He also faces aggravated assault and child endangerment charges.

Authorities say the boy died Thursday after being removed from life support at Bellevue Hospital in New York.

Choi brought the boy to the hospital July 28 in cardiac arrest.

He also had a severe head injury and a healing rib fracture.

Choi’s lawyer, Anthony Iacullo, has said his client pleaded not guilty to earlier charges but did not immediately return a message regarding the upgraded charge.

ONLY ON 11: Father confesses to abuse of infant son

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — A Butler County man accused of abusing his infant son confessed to the crimes on Wednesday.

“Yes I did,” Justin Craig said when Channel 11’s Amy Marcinkiewicz asked him if he hurt his son. “It was a stupid thing, I admit, but it changed me.”

Along with the confession, Craig told Marcinkiewicz that he has a problem with his anger and he took it out on his 3-month-old son.

According to court documents, the infant suffered broken arms, legs and a shoulder at the hands of his father.

Doctors said the injuries were in various stages of healing, which makes police believe the abuse started right after the child was born and continues until his mother and father brought him to the hospital last week.

According to the criminal complaint, the child’s mother and Craig’s girlfriend told police she saw the abuse, but was afraid of Craig. She told troopers she observed Craig choking the baby.

According to the child’s mother, she tried to not allow Craig to be alone with the baby. #“It made me realize that I’m a weak and pathetic person,” Craig said.

While in court, Craig continually said under his breath, “I deserve a second chance, I’m sorry.”

The baby is out of the hospital and with a foster family doing well.

A Dothan father is charged with physically abusing his 5-month-old baby girl.

Sage Steven Pierson, 20, was arrested Saturday and charged with aggravated child abuse, Dothan police say. His bond was set at $30,000.

Cpl. Jerry Moore, the lead investigator on the case, said the baby suffered approximately seven broken bones over the last month.

The latest was a broken left femur that caused the baby to be admitted to Flowers Hospital.

A Jefferson City father is charged with aggravated child abuse.

James David Hickey, 18, of 1823 Overlook Avenue, was arrested Friday evening, several hours after he and the four-month-old child’s mother took her to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, reported Detective Sgt. Eric Thomas of the Jefferson City Police Department.

Hickey is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $50,000. A preliminary hearing is set for General Sessions Court today.

Thomas reported that the female child was transferred to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, where she was treated for multiple fractures. She was released from the hospital over the weekend to the custody of other family members, Thomas reported.

Thomas said medical workers were initially told that the child had hurt her leg by rolling off the couch. However, after an investigation, officers believe the injuries were actually inflicted by Hickey, Thomas reported.

An Omaha father has been charged with felony child abuse in connection with injuries to his 3-month-old son.

Brian M. Swanson, 31, was charged Friday in Douglas County Court. He was released from jail Monday after posting 10 percent of his $500,000 bail.

If convicted, he could face up to 50 years in prison.

The infant’s maternal grandmother, Aecha Otero, said doctors told her that the infant suffered “six cracked bones” and “two brain traumas.” She said the child is blind, but doctors are hopeful that condition can be reversed.

“The doctor cannot guarantee that he will be able to see again, but we are all thinking positive,” Otero said.

Otero said the child’s mother, Alexandria Otero, has been “devastated” by the incident and broke off her engagement to Swanson. A Douglas County Juvenile Court judge placed the boy in protective custody.

According to a police report, Swanson told officers that he was alone with the child when the boy began to choke on the morning of April 18. Swanson said he attempted to help the boy breathe by “putting his finger in his mouth” and then “turning him over and smacking his back.”

The child was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center. The infant was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma, according to a petition filed by the Douglas County Attorney’s Office.

Subdural hematoma, or blood on the brain, is usually caused by severe head injuries.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin father is charged with injury to a child after his 5-month-old twins were found to have several fractured ribs, according to an arrest affidavit. Joshua Reed Farren, 34, is being held in the Travis County Jail on $500,000 bond.

The mother noticed bruising on her son’s face after returning from work around midnight on Nov. 30, and she took the boy to Dell Children’s Medical Center on Dec. 1, 2014, at the request of her pediatrician. Medical staff said infant had eight fractured ribs and two fractures in his left leg.

Doctors then examined the girl and found she had four broken ribs, the affidavit said.

She told authorities that, outside of a few hours on two occasions, she and her husband were the only ones who cared for the twins. Police said Farren was surprised when he learned of his son’s injuries the next day.

“Really, that’s a shocker,” Farren said, according to the document. He also couldn’t tell police where the injuries came from. “I honestly don’t know. You know, unless it’s some way we hold him or something.”

When the officer asked why he wasn’t at the hospital with his wife and children, Farren said his wife had asked him to stay home and get some sleep. Farren then told the officer he had just finished watching a movie when police showed up to his home at 2:30 a.m.

A Child Abuse Resources and Education team said there was no medical history that would account for the twins’ injuries and they were not consistent with birth trauma. The injuries to the boy were likely from shaking or throwing the child, the team is reported as saying.

Despite no longer caring for the children and being unemployed, the affidavit said Farren told detectives he would not have time to meet with them for the foreseeable future. He also declined to provide a statement.

A first-degree felony conviction carries a punishment of 5-99 years in prison.

A Rehoboth Beach man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his infant son.

Sidney G. Davis III, 22, also pleaded guilty to a second-degree assault charge for harming the child's twin brother.

Davis shook 3-month-old Zha-den Davis on May 10 in a room at Sea Esta IV Motel at 20902 Coastal Highway after the baby had been crying, court documents said.

The baby was rushed to Beebe Memorial Hospital in Lewes and then to Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, where he was treated for traumatic brain injuries, three rib fractures and massive retinal bleeding, the document said.

Dr. Adrienne Sekula-Perlman, of the New Castle County Medical Examiner's Office, ruled the child died of head trauma.

The second charge is from an assault against the infant's twin brother.

According to an indictment, Davis assaulted Zha-den's brother between March 15 and May 10, 2014. The twins were born Feb. 3, 2014.

Davis' charges were reduced from murder by abuse or neglect in the first degree and child abuse in the first degree, said his lawyer, Robert Robinson.

"Sidney is a very decent person," Robinson said. "He had a momentary lapse, and it was a tragic disaster."

Davis faces 10-33 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for June 12.

His body was stuffed into garbage bags tucked inside a box in a laundry room. Wednesday, police announced that his stepmother and father had been arrested in connection with his death.

The body of Ahziya Drew Osceola was found in the family's residence in the 5400 block of Johnson Street.

His stepmother, Analiz Rodezno Osceola, 24, was charged Wednesday with aggravated manslaughter; child neglect and providing false information to law enforcement, Hollywood police said.

Her husband of 10 months, Nelson Drew Osceola, 24, who is the child's father, was charged with child neglect, according to the agency.

The father and stepmother of a toddler who was reported missing and later found dead Thursday in his Hollywood home face charges after their arrests Wednesday, police said.

Nelson Osceola was freed on a $50,000 bond from Broward County's main jail Thursday morning.
His wife remained behind bars with a $230,000 bond after appearing in court.

"In his first three years of life, he endured what we believe to be a significant amount of pain," Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez said during a press conference Wednesday. "No child should ever, ever endure this life, the life of little Ahziya."

The cause of the child's death, ruled a homicide, was from blunt impact abdominal trauma, according to the Broward Medical Examiner's Office.

Ahziya's body was wrapped in plastic bags and found inside a Baby Einstein toy box in a laundry room, according to police. A search warrant said two bags of clothing were on top of the box.

His face and body were bruised; his pancreas was broken into three pieces. Enzymes from that organ were let loose and were breaking down internal organs, the medical examiner's office said.

The autopsy also found a spiral fracture of the child's left shin bone that was probably an old break. The medical examiner's office estimated Ahziya died late Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Rodezno Osceola checked into a psychiatric ward March 20 for reasons authorities did not disclose. The couple were taken into custody Wednesday at a Fort Lauderdale hospital after Rodezno Osceola had been discharged, Fernandez said.

The deceased child's father and mother, Karen Cypress, 26, are members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Cypress lives elsewhere in Hollywood as well as on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian reservation in Clewiston. Her son was buried there Sunday, said Kenneth Tommie, the child's maternal grandfather.

He called Ahziya "an outgoing boy" who loved to play with classmates at the Seminole preschool on the reservation in Hollywood.

After a court hearing Monday, when the couple were temporarily barred from visiting two other children who had been removed from the home, Nelson Osceola was asked what happened to the baby.

"I just buried my son yesterday," Osceola said. "I'm just trying to find peace with myself right now, you understand? My son is gone."

The investigation began at 11:48 a.m. Thursday when Seminole Police called Hollywood Police to report that the child was missing from the house, Fernandez said.

Rodezno Osceola told detectives she last saw the boy in the house that morning about 10 a.m. and found the back door ajar, her wallet containing $160 gone and an additional $3,000 missing, Hollywood Police spokeswoman Officer Meredith Elrich said.

That prompted simultaneous investigations of a possible abduction and a search for the missing child, Fernandez said. Those efforts, including bloodhounds to track the child, were canceled when the body was found.

"There were many details [Rodezno Osceola] discussed, some of which were contradicting," Fernandez said. "She knew the child was injured [and needed medical attention.]"

From the report of Ahziya's disappearance and the discovery of his body inside the house about 12 hours later, Fernandez said his agency, Seminole Police, Broward Sheriff's deputies and Community Emergency Response Team volunteers did a "2- to 3-square-mile area" search.

During Ahziya's short life, there were four reports to the Florida Department of Children and Families hotline, according to the department. Three described injuries and allegations of harm that prompted home visits, doctor exams, interviews with teachers and relatives, counseling and training for the parents. But physical abuse allegations were not substantiated.

Ahziya had a purple bruise on his left cheek that was blamed on a fall onto a wooden bed frame, an August 2013 report said.

In April 2014, fingerprints and a bruise on the lower side of each jawbone, scratches on both sides of Ahziya's neck and bruises on his left back ribcage were observed, a report states. His father attributed some of the marks to a fall in the bathroom and rough play with kids at an Easter party, and said his son fell all the time.

A bruise and abrasion were noticed beneath Ahziya's eye in December 2014. The child's bottom was also sore. His mother took him to an emergency room doctor who found small abrasions in his rectum that could have been from constipation, a report said. He was otherwise described as "very happy, rambunctious and talkative" and denied being harmed by anyone.

A fourth report said child investigators determined there was inadequate supervision and medical neglect when in January 2014 Ahziya left his mother in a fifth-floor hotel room, got into an elevator and was found in the hotel lobby. Karen Cypress was arrested and pleaded not guilty to criminal charges including child neglect. The case is open, according to Broward court records. The boy was placed with his father and Cypress was allowed to visit her son.

State reports listed investigators — from the Broward Sheriff's Child Protection Investigation Section, who work on behalf of DCF; the medically oriented Child Protection Team and Seminole Family Services — that had looked into allegations of abuse of Ahziya.

"There is no fail-safe system, other than a responsible parent," Fernandez said.

A Chesterfield County father will spend 10 years behind bars for shaking his son so violently that it caused neurological devastation and eventually the boy’s death, 10 days after being hospitalized.

Judge Steven C. McCallum of Chesterfield Circuit Court imposed the maximum punishment allowed by law in sentencing Bradley W. Simmons, 23, to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the March 23, 2013, death of Jayden W. Simmons. The judge also fined Simmons $2,500.

Jayden was 5 weeks old when authorities said Simmons shook his child with such force that it triggered cerebral and retinal hemorrhaging and a leg fracture. The child was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment, but he died after being removed from life support after 10 days.

Chesterfield prosecutor Erin Barr said Simmons gave investigators several conflicting stories about how his son came to be injured.

He told investigators the boy had fallen off a bed after being left briefly unattended; that a bottle struck him after being knocked off a shelf into the crib; that he accidentally struck the infant in the head with a video-game controller while playing a game with the boy in his lap; and that he bumped the infant carrier on a post while they were walking.

“Ultimately after a number of interviews, he came out and admitted that he did shake him,” Barr said. “But he said that he shook him because he was unresponsive and was trying to get him to wake up.”

Had the case gone to trial, competing experts would have testified as to what the medical evidence showed, Barr said.

“Our theory was that the type of shaking that would cause these injuries was a violent shaking, and it doesn’t make any sense that someone would shake a child that violently to try to wake him up,” the prosecutor said.

Simmons, who originally was charged with second-degree murder, pleaded no contest to the reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter last August. #Both the prosecution and defense had subpoenaed physicians to testify at Monday’s sentencing hearing, but both sides agreed to stipulate each doctor’s testimony.

Simmons’ fiancee was also inside the family’s home in the 15200 block of Timsberry Circle when Jayden was injured, but she was elsewhere in the apartment at the time, Barr said. Simmons “was alone with the child.”

After the fiancee became aware of her baby’s condition, she and Simmons drove their child to the hospital but ended up stopping along the way at a nearby Chesterfield fire station. A paramedic crew transported the infant to VCU Medical Center.

Jayden was Simmons’ second child and his fiancee’s first. Simmons has a daughter from an earlier relationship, Barr said.

St. Petersburg, Florida -- A St. Petersburg man is behind bars, accused of abusing his 3-month-old son. Police say on Wednesday, the infant was brought to All Children's Hospital by his mother with what was later determined to be a broken arm.

The mother says she was at work when she got a call from her husband, 24-year-old Norman Williams, telling her their baby had fallen off the bend and appeared to be injured.

Further examination of the child revealed he also had multiple rib fractures that were in different stages of healing.

Investigators went to the Mosley Motel, where the family was staying, to speak with Williams. At the motel, police found he him in custody of five other children -- ages 1 through 8 -- two of whom had bruises all over their body.

Those children, ages 5 and 6, stated they got the injuries after Williams struck them with a belt. Two of the children also stated that they saw Williams strangle the baby victim when he wouldn't stop crying.

All children were taken into the protective custody of DCF.

Williams was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated child abuse and two counts of child abuse.

LANCASTER, PA (WPMT) A 22 year old Lancaster City father is charged with Child Abuse after allegedly breaking his 7 month old child’s arm.

City police and EMS responded at about 1:23 pm Wednesday to 102 Locust Street, Apartment 3 for a report of an injured child. They found the infant suffering from an apparent arm injury. The child was transported to Lancaster General Hospital, where it was discovered that the child’s arm was fractured.

Detectives determined that the child’s father, Jeffrey Allen Bailey, caused the injury. Charges against Bailey include Aggravated Assault and Endangering the Welfare of Children. Police say their investigation continues.

A father accused of killing his baby boy by suffocation after forcing a pacifier in his mouth, has pleaded not guilty.

Danny Adams, 24, of Lewiston is charged with depraved indifference murder and manslaughter in the death of his infant son following his death in December.

He denied the charges Justice MaryGay Kennedy read from a grand jury indictment, handed up last week.

Police said Adams forced a pacifier into the mouth of his 14-week-old son, Zade, shortly before he stopped breathing.

They said he told them he was frustrated that his son would not stop crying so put a pacifier in Jade's mouth and forced him to stay on his stomach by pushing on his back.

An autopsy determined the cause of death was asphyxiation.

Hornblower said he expects a bail hearing to be set to determine whether Adams will be held in jail without bail or allowed release prior to his trial.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew Crockett asked that Adams be barred from contacting Zade's mother, Kaitlyn Baker, 18. Kennedy agreed.

Adams has been held without bail since his arrest in early January following the death of his son on December 14.

A murder conviction in Maine carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison; manslaughter, up to 30 years.

Adams told police in an earlier interview that he had injected heroin the night before at a friend's house, then smoked marijuana with Baker when he got home. He said he had bruised Zade's ears when he squeezed them with his thumb and fingers as he held the head of the baby, who continued to cry, according to court documents.

Adams said he caused bruising on Zade's forehead when he forced a pacifier in the baby's mouth and held it in place with his palm, while supporting his fingers on the baby's forehead.

Doctors also detected a rib fracture during the autopsy. He told police he had become frustrated with Zade's crying about four weeks earlier and had squeezed the baby with force.

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A 25-year-old father is behind bars accused of abusing his three-month-old son.

Henrico police charged Travon Owens with felony child neglect and malicious wounding after his three-month-old son was hospitalized.

Investigators said the charges stem from an incident at the 11 North at White Oaks Apartments off North Laburnum Avenue, but are releasing few details in this case since it involves a minor.

Investigators said the victim was taken to VCU Medical Center last week for a fracture.

While examining the baby, doctors noticed injuries that were consistent with abuse. As a result, hospital officials contacted police and Owens was arrested.

People who live at the apartment complex where the incident allegedly happened were shocked and saddened by the news.

CBS 6 News reached out to Owens at Henrico Jail West, but he declined our request for an interview.

Owens, who was arraigned Wednesday morning, is scheduled to appear in court on March 9.

Very typical scenario. Dad with history of violent criminal behavior is typically unemployed/unemployable. In desperation, Mom drafts him to do infant care while she is at work. The predictable happens when father with no nurturing skills or empathy has responsibility for a baby: More violence...despite the denials. It's not rocket science, people.

And notice the typical "clueless daddy" move. Feigned ignorance about why the baby was crying and didn't do anything about getting medical help. Just complained to Mom about it and let her deal with it when she got home. Happens again and again.

Father accused of breaking infant son's femur

LANCASTER – Accused of assaulting his 9-month-old son, a Lancaster man is facing multiple felony charges after an incident sent the infant to the hospital in November.

The infant's father, Nicholas A. Shaw Sr., 25, was arrested after Nationwide Children's Hospital sent a referral to the Lancaster Police Department requesting an investigation. The infant's mother brought the young boy to the Columbus hospital after she returned from work and saw the baby favoring one leg, according to the police report. The boy had a broken femur, the report said.

The mother told hospital officials she was at work in Lancaster when she received a call from her husband, saying their baby, Nicholas A. Shaw Jr., was crying for an unknown reason. She took the boy to the hospital hours later and told hospital officials she suspected Shaw had harmed their baby while she was gone, the report said.

On Wednesday, Shaw's wife, Helen Shaw, said she never made abuse accusations about her husband to hospital staff to prompt the referral to police.

"My son's leg might have gotten caught in the baby bed and he tried to get it out," she said, but was adamant that hurting their child would have been "completely out of character."

"He even hollers for his daddy," she said.

The infant was wearing a cast from the injury, but has since had it removed, she said.

Lancaster police investigated the claims and prosecutors took the case to a grand jury, which indicted him on multiple charges, including felonious assault and endangering children, both second-degree felonies, on Dec. 19. He also was indicted on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Nicholas Shaw Sr. was arrested by Fairfield County Sheriff's Office deputies three days later.

According to court records, he has one previous misdemeanor assault conviction involving an incident May 23. He pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge in September in Fairfield County Municipal Court and was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 177 suspended. He was ordered to have only peaceful contact with the victim and two years of probation, in addition to a mental health/anger management assessment.

Nicholas Shaw Sr. is being held at the Fairfield County Jail on a $50,000 cash/surety bond for the November assault case. He is awaiting trial, which is scheduled for Feb. 17.

PHOENIX - A Valley man was charged with one count of child abuse with intent after his 44-day-old daughter suffered brain bleeding, rib fractures, bruises and hemorrhages.

The child was in the care of her father at their residence near 40th Street and Thomas Road, according to police.

The suspect, identified as Justin Allee, called his mother and the child's mother prior to alerting police of the incident, a police report said.

According to the report, Allee initially said he did nothing to cause the child's injuries, but later said the injuries occurred after the child fell in the bathtub.

The report also said the child's mother left for work without noticing any injuries to the child. She told police Allee initially called her saying the child was not breathing before proceeding to call back to say he was in an ambulance with the child.

The child was treated and stabilized at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Hannibal man set for arraignment hearing on child abuse charges

HANNIBAL, MO. -- A Hannibal man will have an arraignment hearing on Friday on child abuse charges.

Eugene Melton, 23, will face trial after being accused of abusing his 3-month-old son on Dec. 2.

He is accused of throwing, shaking and biting the infant.

The infant was transferred from Hannibal Regional Hospital to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis with a broken femur, bite marks and bleeding in the brain.

Melton has requested a change of judge in the case.

Authorities charge father with child abuse

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina man was charged after a three-month-old child was admitted to the hospital with two fractured ribs and legs, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office.

The child’s father, David Agnew, 19, was charged with child abuse, according to investigators.

The girl was taken to the Department of Social Services after being released from the hospital.

Agnew was placed under a $400,000 secured bond. The case is under investigation.

A 24-year-old Kissimmee father was arrested Monday after police say he broke his infant son's thigh bone and lied about how it happened.

Jorge Santiago initially told police he was holding his 5-month-old son tucked under his arm. He said he sat down in a chair and reached to pick up a blanket that was on the floor. That's when heard "a loud 'pop' and the baby started to cry about one minute later, a report said.

Santiago's story suggested that the weight of his body put too much pressure on the baby's left bent leg and caused the infants femur to fracture.

But when Santiago and the little boy's mother brought him to Osceola Regional Medical Center about 9 a.m. Monday, emergency room doctors realized Santiago's story didn't match the severity of his son's injuries. Santiago's girlfriend said she was sleeping at the time and was awakened by the baby's screaming.

Hospital staffers notified Kissimmee police and the Florida Department of Children and Families.

A doctor told police that the little boy's injury "was more consistent with a twisting motion and not consistent with simply being compressed in the wrong direction," Santiago's arrest report said.

During questioning, police explained to Santiago "that the femur is the strongest bone in the human body and that his explanation was not consistent with the amount of force it would take to break (the infant's) leg," the report said.

When confronted, Santiago admitted that he knew his story didn't add up. He later told police that the baby was injured while Santiago was attempting to change his diaper about 7:50 a.m. Monday.

"Jorge then confessed that he was getting frustrated while changing [his son's dirty] diaper because [his son] kept sticking his legs straight out keeping him form wiping and changing the diaper," the report said.

Santiago then demonstrated that how he roughly pushed his son's legs several times, with more force each time. He told police it was likely that he twisted the baby's legs as he pushed them back, the report said.

Santiago and her girlfriend lived with the baby in a single room they rented from a Kissimmee woman. They didn't have a phone or a car. The homeowner told police that she routinely heard Santiago yelling and cursing at his son.

According to the arrest report, the couple did not have a phone and had to message several friends on Facebook before they could find someone to give them a ride to the hospital. The baby was later transferred to Nemours Children's Hospital for more treatment.

Santiago was arrested on aggravated child-abuse charges and booked into the Osceola County Jail on $2,500 bail.
