NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- A father accused of leaving his son in a car for hours while he gambled is in some serious legal trouble.

32-year-old Kyuyoun Lee was aided by a Korean translator inside Norwich Superior Court. He's accused of leaving his seven-month-old son in a car for seven hours while he gambled at Mohegan Sun.

"What does he have to say about that," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.

"Well I definitely think the allegations are very serious," replied Sung Ho Hwang, Lee's attorney.

News 8 learned more about the Waterbury father from attorney Sung Ho Hwang. He tells us he is trying to get his client accelerated rehabilitation because he has no prior criminal record and is the sole supporter of his family. However, he also has a gambling problem and is now seeking help.

"Are you saying that his addiction led him to make some poor decisions," Detelj asked.

"Yeah absolutely," said Hwang.

"This is a human life, a little...an infant," said Tammy S., of New London. "This is an infant baby that cannot handle being out in the sun right now like we are today."

"There are certain mitigating factors," said Hwang. "It was overnight. He did check on the baby every couple of hours, but still I understand that was a serious charge."

Lee faces charges of leaving a child unsupervised and risk of injury to a minor.

At the time of his arrest Lee's infant son was taken away by DCF. He was returned to the family the next day, but his attorney says that Lee is not allowed to watch him without his wife present.

"What does his wife have to say about this," Detelj asked.

"Obviously she is very concerned and she knows that he has this problem," Hwang replied, "and she's helping him with it, with the process."

This is their first child.

Some shoppers at a Kenner Wal-Mart last Saturday may have had warm thoughts as they glimpsed 20-year-old Joshua Gibson shopping with his 2-year-old son.

But Mr. Gibson shouldn't expect a card come Fathers' Day.

Store personnel allegedly caught Mr. Gibson removing several DVDs from their cases and slipping them into the child's diaper bag. Taking your toddler along on a shoplifting spree is not what most people would consider spending quality time with your son. Yet Mr. Gibson found a way to make the situation even worse.

When a police officer working a private detail approached him at the store's exit, Mr. Gibson admitted to having taken the DVDs, according to a police report. Once the officer tried to put him under arrest, Mr. Gibson made a break for it, leaving his son in the parking lot, police said.

It took authorities more than 30 minutes to find Mr. Gibson, who had fled to a building across Loyola Drive from the store.

Authorities temporarily took custody of the child after his father fled. Police booked Mr. Gibson with theft, resisting arrest and child desertion.

Evidently, Mr. Gibson was not concerned with the welfare of his son when he abandoned the child -- and he'll have a heck of a time arguing otherwise.

Dad CARLOS FERNANDO AGUILAR CEDENO wasn't going to let a little inconvenient thing like a baby daughter interfere with HIS social life, no sir. So he left the baby home alone while he went clubbing. No mention of mom--the baby went to Child Protective Services (CPS). So is he a single dad or what? As usual, mums the word from the mainstream media on these issues. Not a peep on how or why this neglectful, self-centered dad had possession of this baby, or why she wasn't with her mother.

Police found a six-month old surprise waiting for them when they answered a call to a Dale City home. And the father of the little suprise was put in jail.

Officers were called to the home in the 14700 block of Daley Lane at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to investigate a child neglect complaint, said Erika Hernandez.

When they arrived, they found a six-month-old girl alone inside the home. Hernandez said the girl’s father, Carlos Fernando Aguilar Cedeno, 22, was at a club with a group of friends.

He returned home that night to find his daughter in the custody of Child Protective Services, said Hernandez.

Cedeno was held on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Dad leave 1- and 4-year-old home alone (Newport News, Virginia)

Dad SANDRO SANTO is another one of those dads doing caretaking while Mom was at work (read: Dad is unemployed?). He left a 1- and 4-year-old home alone while he went to a doctor's appointment. The 4-year-old was later found running down the street and obviously unsupervised.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A Newport News father is facing two counts of Child Neglect after his two children, ages 1 and 4, were found unattended in their home in the 100 blk. of Spu Drive last Saturday.

Newport News Public Information Officer Harold Eley told WAVY.com a concerned citizen notified police after seeing the 4-year-old running down the street.

According to police, 36-year-old Sandro Soto left the children home alone while he went to a doctor's appointment; the children's mother was at work.

Soto told officers, who were at his home when he returned from his appointment, that he thought the children would be fine while he was out.

Child Protective Services was called out and the children's mother was called. She is now caring for the children.

Dad leaves dog, 10-month-old baby in car while he gambles (Indianapolis, Indiana)

Dad KEVIN J. BERMES left his dog and his 10-month-old son in his car for at least an hour while he was gambling elsewhere. Police estimate that it was over 100 degrees in the car, and say that the baby was beneath a coat and hooded sweatshirt. Dad said he was meeting his girlfriend at the casino. The child was reportedly returned to the MOTHER, so it appears that these parents were separated or divorced. Wonder if Dad had court-ordered visitation or custody rights? Wonder if he'll keep them now? In Indiana especially, all kinds of outright criminal dads keep their "rights," so all bets are off.

ANDERSON — A man arrested Monday is charged with leaving an infant and a dog locked inside a hot car while he gambled at Hoosier Park.

Kevin J. Bermes, 23, Indianapolis, was in the Madison County Jail on Tuesday on charges of neglect of a dependent and animal cruelty.

According to an Anderson police probable cause affidavit, police arrived to find Hoosier Park personnel around a vehicle in the parking lot, where 10-month-old Brook Bates was locked inside beneath a coat and hooded sweatshirt. A full-grown boxer dog also was in the car, panting heavily, the report says.

The temperature when police arrived between 9 and 10 a.m. Monday was 78 degrees, but the temperature inside the car was estimated to be above 100 degrees.

Police called a wrecker service to gain entry to the 2006 Pontiac Gran Prix. They also contacted Child Protective Services.

“I noted the condition of the victim as having red cheeks and she was sweating,” according to the report by arresting officer Scott Calhoun.

“A few minutes after getting the door open and the child out of the car, the father (Bermes) approached,” the affidavit says.

Bermes told police that he was supposed to meet his girlfriend at the casino, where she was to take the child. “At one point he said he went inside to look for his girlfriend and then stated he was playing slots and lost track of time,” according to the report.

Hoosier Park security reviewed surveillance video of the parking lot and determined that the child and dog were left unattended in the car for more than an hour, the affidavit said.

The child was returned to the custody of her mother and the dog was taken to the Anderson Animal Shelter.

Bermes was held on $5,000 bond.

Dad SEAN FINISTER apparently didn't feel like babysitting while Mom was at work. So he just took off, leaving their 8-month-old daughter at home alone. I have an idea: if Dad beats the rap and mom is dumb enough to keep him around, how about DAD get a job so mom can watch the baby?

Father Arrested for Child Desertion

Sean Finister of Franklin has been arrested and charged with child desertion and criminal abandonment.

Finister is accused of leaving his eight month old daughter alone in a house without anyone there to care for her.

A news release stated that the 21-year-old man was watching his daughter while the mother was at work. The report continues by stating that when the mother returned home she found the child had been left in a crib. When the mother discovered that Finister was not there she contacted the Morgan City Police Department.

Warrants were issued for Finister and he was arrested on September 1st.

No bond has been set at this time.

The three-year-old was found wandering around with inadequate clothing, and the one-year-old showed distinct signs of abuse (including sexual abuse?) and neglect: a severe rash and abscesses on her legs and genital area. No mention of a mother at all. Custodial father?

Father who left kids home alone to go drinking takes plea deal

A 22-year-old man accused of leaving his two young children home alone to go out drinking avoided prison time in a plea deal with prosecutors in San Mateo County Superior Court on Monday.

Abidan Eliel Garcia Vasquez had been charged with three felony counts of child endangerment, which carried a sentence of more than seven years in state prison, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

However, on Monday he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and now faces up to six months in county jail, Wagstaffe said.

Vasquez's 3-year-old son was found the night of March 28 wandering alone in an unincorporated Redwood City neighborhood, shivering and clad only in a T-shirt and shorts.

San Mateo County sheriff's deputies learned the boy lived in a nearby home occupied by two families. When they went to the home, they found cockroaches, garbage and rotting food throughout the house and an open beer bottle on the floor, Wagstaffe said.

Also at the home was a 1-year-old girl with a severe rash and abscesses on her legs and genital area, Wagstaffe said.

Authorities discovered Vasquez had allegedly left the home around 9 p.m. after the children were asleep to go out drinking, and did not ask anyone to watch them, Wagstaffe said.

Vasquez is scheduled to be sentenced July 28.

"Caretaking" father ROBERT J. FLORES is accused on intentional child abuse in the death of his four-month-old daughter. According to Flores, he left the child unattended--he put her in a laundry basket with unfolded clothes in the closet? Huh?--while he went out to buy beer. An hour later he came home, and the baby was "unresponsive" when he remembered to look for her. Mom was at work at the time.

Accused father moves to suppress statement made after baby's death

LAS CRUCES — A motion to suppress the statement of Robert J. Flores on the night his daughter died was partially heard Friday before lunch recess by Third Judicial District Court Judge Stephen Bridgforth.

Flores, 24, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of intentional child abuse resulting in the 2007 death of his daughter, 4-month-old Kalynne Flores. A conviction is punishable by life in prison. He is free on $150,000 bond.

Flores is a former resident of Artesia, where he was a standout player for the high school football team.

A new hearing time, during which the prosecution plans to call two more Las Cruces police officers as witnesses, had not been scheduled by the end of business Friday, said District Attorney Susana Martinez.

Flores picked up his daughter from a baby-sitter the evening of Dec. 5 and bought beer on his way to the home he and Kalynne's mother, nurse Deserii Cortez, rented from Flores' maternal uncle, Las Cruces police detective Oscar Alvarado, according to court records.

Flores allegedly told police he placed his daughter in a laundry basket full of unfolded clothing and put the basket in a closet because he did not want neighbors to hear the baby cry while he was out purchasing more beer. Flores told police he was gone for about an hour and didn't immediately check on his daughter, but did so some time later and found her unresponsive.
Cortez was working at a hospital until 3:30 a.m. the night her daughter died. The state's
medical investigator ruled the child died of asphyxia.

District Attorney Susana Martinez argued Friday Flores' statements at the hospital, when he had his blood drawn about two hours after his daughter was declared dead, and to LCPD officers the morning of Dec. 6 were made freely.

"'Are you trying to determine if I'm under the influence of any medication or anything?'" Martinez said Flores asked when an LCPD officer asked to draw his blood. "And then the question back from the detective (was) 'Are you under the influence of anything?' And then that's when he had that discussion about, that he'd had some beer, that the doctor had asked him if he had been drinking, because he smelled the odor of alcohol on him."

LCPD Detective Edgar Rosa, who questioned Flores that morning, said Flores told him and his partner that after finding his daughter dead and realizing he needed to call 911, he decided "to throw out the beer, because he said it would look bad."

Flores was neither handcuffed nor patted down Dec. 6, said Rosa, who said his area of expertise was child abuse investigations.

"Compared to other parents (after accidents) ... he just wasn't showing that much emotion. He was scared about himself, but he wasn't showing that much emotion about that child," Rosa testified.

Alvarado, who said he was a Metro Narcotics agent at the time of the child's death, disputed that in testimony.

"He had his head down, seemed distraught," Alvarado said of Flores' behavior at the hospital. "You could tell he was really sad, the emotions with the loss of the baby."

Flores was arrested and charged Dec. 7, according to the criminal complaint filed in court, but defense attorney Mark Pickett, of Las Cruces, entered into evidence a form dated Dec. 6 usually used for DWI arrests to track the custody of Flores' blood draw.

"In DWI cases, it requires you to be under arrest. In this case, they used that form to show the date of blood drawn. They were improvising," Martinez said outside court.

Defense attorney Mollie McGraw argued in court that Flores "was never told he was free to leave or had the right to an attorney" and that Rosa and his partner sat almost blocking the door to Flores in the interview room.

Alvarado said under cross-examination Friday that after questioning, Flores was allowed to leave with his parents, who stayed at a hotel unknown to Alvarado but kept in touch through phone. He testified his partner told him Flores would be charged with one of several crimes, but "if I could guarantee bringing Robert (back to police) the next day, they could hold off on charges."

"He left the police department, so he obviously wasn't under arrest," Martinez said outside court. "He was told three different times throughout his interview that he was not in custody, he was free to go, he was free to terminate questioning at any time."

Flores did not testify Friday and declined to comment to the Sun-News.

The case is scheduled to go to trial July 13-17.

Dad arrested for leaving kids alone while he went out to get his car fixed (Conway, South Carolina)

Caretaking father TYRONE GARDNER was arrested for unlawful neglect of a child when he left his three children alone at home. Guess he didn't feel like watching them while he took care of manly things, like getting his car fixed. The four-year-old twins were found wandering around outside, unsupervised and with no shoes. The two-year-old only had a dirty diaper on.
The children were put in the custody of the Department of Social Services. No mention of mom. Is this a custodial dad? Or just an irresponsible one who has no business taking care of children?

CONWAY, SC - Police found two children running on a road in Conway and discovered the kids were left home alone.

Conway police said when the father, Tyrone Gardner, went to the station looking for his children, he told police he left them home alone because he needed to get his vehcile repaired.

Police said without supervision, they were wandering around with no shoes on their feet and one only had on a dirty diaper.

Police said the set of 4-year-old twin boys and 2 year old girl were discovered Monday afternoon running on Blossom street in Conway.

Gardner is charged with unlawful neglect of a child and is in jail on $10,000 bond.

The children are in the custody of the department of social services.

"Caretaking" father JARRED JAMES MCKIE was crashed out at home, apparently drugged out and unresponsive, when authorities decided to check on him. His three-year-old son had been found wandering around outside and unattended. The child told a neighbor that he was hungry and did not want to go home (which was found to be "unlivable"). A one-year-old child was found in the crib next to the passed out dad. McKie has been charged with child neglect.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL -- Deputies say they have arrested a man for neglecting his two children.

Jarred James McKie, 24, from Geneva Court in northwest St. Johns County, was arrested Monday.

According to the police report, a woman who lives on Geneva Court answered her door and found a three-year-old boy on her doorstep.

The woman, who has not been identified, said the boy told her he was hungry. She thought he may be the child of her new neighbors across the street.

The police report said she went to her new neighbors' house at 740 Geneva Court and found the front door open. She described the house as "unlivable." She said she yelled several times for someone to come to the door but no one came.

She then went back to her house and called police. The woman said the child told her he did not want to go back home.

When a deputy arrived, he said he also found the front door of 740 Geneva Court open and described the house as very hot because the air conditioner was not working.

The deputy said he rang the door bell numerous times and yelled, "Sheriff's Office;" however, no one came to the door.

The deputy said he noticed furniture and items strewn about the house.

When other deputies arrived, they said they found McKie on a bed inside the house. One deputy said, "It took several yells and a shake to get McKie to respond. There were several drug-using paraphernalia laying in plain sight."

The deputy also found a one-year-old playing in a crib next to McKie.

According to the report, two fans were running. One of them had a torn back cover, exposing the blades "for possible injury." The report said an bottle of alcohol was also within reach of the child. Additionally, the deputy said there was an in-ground pool that did not have water in it and was "unsecured from the children."

In the police report, McKie told the deputy he had a drug problem.

A judge set McKie's bail at $1,000.

According to the police report, a DCF agent responded to the home, and the children were released to their grandmother.

First Coast News attempted to contact McKie. However, no one was at the residence.

Dad with DWI charged after 1-year-old left alone; Mom lived elsewhere (Statesville, North Carolina)

Caretaking father BRADLEY LUTHER JOHNSON apparently thought it was entirely appropriate to leave a one-year-old child home alone. Well, maybe that was better than the alternative, which was cruising around with his drunk daddy in the middle of the night. But the good times ended when Dad got nailed with a DWI. And when Dad blurted out the kid was home by himself, Dad got nailed with a child abuse charge. Not clear if Dad has custody or just some sort of visitation arrangement, but when Mom came by Dad's house to pick up the child earlier in the evening, Dad blew her off, saying the kid was asleep, come by tomorrow. (Got to have that control, you know.) Then Dad left to go party. Go figure.

Man charged after 1-year-old is left alone

A Statesville man is facing a charge of child abuse after authorities said he left his 1-year-old son at home alone.

Bradley Luther Johnson was arrested on the misdemeanor charge.

Sgt. Brian Nichols of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office learned Johnson was arrested by the Statesville Police Department on a driving while impaired charge, and were told the 1-year-old might be at home by himself.

After learning of the incident, Nichols went to Johnson's Jennings Road home around 4:10 a.m. Wednesday and was unable to get anyone to come to the door.

Sgt. Doyle Summers and Deputy Eric Estes got keys to the residence, and entered the house, to find the boy asleep in his bedroom.

The child's mother, who does not live at the house, arrived, deputies said.

She told deputies she'd been by the house around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday to pick up the boy, but Johnson told her the child was asleep and she could pick him up in the morning.

Deputies said shortly after the mother left Tuesday night, Johnson left and was subsequently arrested by the SPD.

The Iredell County Department of Social Services is investigating.

The child was returned to his mother and was unharmed.

Dad knocks out mom, leaves 8-month-old unattended (Evans Mills, New York)

Oh, yea. Dads are really stepping up to the plate where child care is concerned.
Take this case. The mother suggested to the father, DION D. THOMAS, that he needed to do more to take care of their eight-month old child. Dear dad promptly got angry, grabbed a metal bar, and struck her on the back of the head, rendering her unconscious and creating a one-inch cut. The baby was still sitting in her car seat, where she had been left, when mom regained consciousness. Dad is charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He has an impressive criminal record of assault too. I suppose we should be glad that some of that "anger" wasn't taken out on the baby--at least this time.

Note to Mom: I'm not sure I'd be encouraging this guy to lend a bigger hand around the house.

Man allegedly knocked daughter's mother out

EVANS MILLS — A man who allegedly left his 8-month-old daughter unattended after knock-ing out the child's mother was arrested and jailed Tuesday night.

Dion D. Thomas, 26, of 33200 County Route 18, Theresa, is charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He remained a prisoner Wednesday in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Watertown, with bail set at $1,000 by Pamelia Town Justice Robert H. Austin. He awaits grand jury action.

The incident occurred the afternoon of May 26 at the home of Ann M. Gates, 23, Schell Avenue.
Ms. Gates found Mr. Thomas playing with their daughter, and she began a conversation in which she suggested he needs to do more to take care of their child, according to documents filed with the court. He became angry, grabbed a metal bar and struck her on the back of the head, rendering her unconscious and creating a one-inch cut, police allege.

He then exited the house, leaving the child in a car seat in a bedroom, according to the court documents. When Ms. Gates regained consciousness, the child was still in the car seat.

Mr. Thomas has prior convictions in assault cases. He pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree assault in Watertown City Court in March 2006 and was sentenced to one-year probation. A year later, he was convicted of third-degree assault in Jefferson County Court, was again sentenced to probation and then served a jail term for violating probation.

Watertown police assisted with the arrest Tuesday.

WALDPORT, Ore. -- Two children spent Father's day wandering the streets of Waldport looking for their dad who was passed out drunk in a field, deputies said.

The family was at an outdoor concert on Sunday and witnesses reported seeing Alfredo Medina-Ortiz, 20, of Waldport, drinking heavily, deputies said.

At about 9:45 p.m. a Lincoln County deputy was flagged down by a person who said a baby was found in the road in the area of Highway 34 and John Street, deputies said.

Medina-Ortiz's two children -- a 1-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter -- were left alone at the concert and couldn't find their father, deputies said.

When the 8-year-old wasn't able to find her father or brother, she called her grandfather to come pick her up. When he came to get her, he found her brother by himself on the sidewalk on the corner of Highway 34 and John Street, deputies said.

Investigators found Medina-Ortiz passed out drunk in a field nearby, deputies said. They arrested him on charges of child neglect.

The two children weren't harmed and were released to their grandparents.
