Obviously some sort of custodial situation, since dad's girlfriend is mentioned, who is clearly not the mother.
Whether Daddy had full custody or shared/joint is not clarified. And Mom's existence has been erased entirely. How did this abuser get access to a child? No answer here. Who gave it to him? No answer here.

Jennings man arrested on child abuse charge
A Jennings man has been booked in connection with the injury of his child, Jennings Police said.
Robert D. Bourque, 30, of Jennings, was booked with cruelty to a juvenile. As of Tuesday, no bond had been set for his release.
Police were called to Jennings American Legion Hospital Saturday after an eight-year-old child was brought to the hospital with a head wound. His father, identified as Bourque, told police the child fell off a couch and hit his head on a wooden floor.
However, medical personnel reported the child had vomited before his arrival at the hospital and after his arrival, and a CT scan on the child showed a large brain bleed, a spokesman said.
The child was transferred to a Lafayette hospital where a neurosurgeon determined that the child's injuries were not consistent with falling off a couch, the spokesman said.
The child then told investigators that his father was upset with him because he didn't want to play with his dad's girlfriend's daughter. The child told investigators that his father picked him up and body-slammed him onto the floor, the spokesman said. When investigators went back to the father with the child's story, he allegedly confessed what he had done, the spokesman said.

Douglasville police are investigating the death of a Louisiana toddler who was visiting his father in Georgia, authorities said Thursday.
Two-year-old King Davis was visiting his father Courtney Chauvez Craig, 23, when he was found dead Tuesday inside Craig’s Millwood Park in Douglasville. Responding Douglasville officers determined the child’s death to be suspicious.
Craig was arrested and charged with cruelty to children and felony murder in connection with the case.
King’s mother and other family members told Channel 2 Action that they just want answers.
“We’re not holding any grudges. We want closure. We want to know what happened to King,” grandmother Spanky Davis told the station.
Two other people were in the apartment when police arrived and found the boy, according to the police report obtained by Channel 2. "There were multiple people there. Somebody knows what happened. He was a 2-year-old baby. Somebody knows what happened and they're hiding it," said Giana Davis, an aunt.
Jafari Molyneaux, a friend of Craig's, said he just saw both father and son this past weekend, according to Channel 2. "He was a great father," Molyneaux told the station. "I know for a fact that Courtney did not do harm to this child, I know he didn't."
Craig is currently being held without bond in the Douglas County Adult Detention Center, Lt. Glenn Daniel, Douglas County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Authorities said an autopsy is being performed to determine the toddler’s cause of death.

Custodial dad charged with 2nd-degree murder in beating death of 14-year-old son (Jefferson Parish, Louisiana)
We've posted on this case before. As usual, the media refuses to clearly identify the accused killer as a custodial father, much less explain how he got custody or who gave it to him. But the hints are adding up. It definitely seems more likely than not that FURNELL DANIEL was custodial.
Why? Other than reporting the mother's grief, there is no mention that she saw signs of abuse and reported them or saw signs of abuse and failed to report them. Which suggests she was shut out of the picture--a very likely scenario with a father who is this violent. Abusive men are almost always controlling and possessive, and very often intent on stripping the mother of the thing that means the most to her--her own children. That they then turn around and then kill the kids is perfectly consistent with their abuse/control way of thinking.
Once again, the media is ignoring HOW and WHY this poor boy ended up in the home of this vicious sociopath.

A Jefferson Parish man accused of beating his teenage son to death used a broken-off "2-by-4" railing from a crib in the attack, the same stick he kept in the family's living room to discipline his children, an investigator said court Wednesday (March 2).
The testimony came at a hearing for defendants in the Feb. 5 beating of 14-year-old Jalen Daniel. A judge found probable cause to charge Terri Daniel, the boy's stepmother, with second-degree murder.
The boy's father Furnell Daniel, who faces the same charge, waived his right to a preliminary exam in Jefferson Parish Commissioner Court.
The boy was taken to the hospital Feb. 6, a day after he was beaten, and died Feb. 11.
Homicide Det. Gabriel Faucetta, testifying at Terry Daniel's preliminary exam, said investigators learned Furnell Daniel, 43, used a crib railing about "4-or 5-feet in length, lacquer-finish 2-by-4."
Faucetta said one of Daniel's other children told investigators their father used the stick to paddle them, and kept the piece of wood in the corner of the living room, propped against the wall. Faucetta said after the fatal beating, deputies found the stick "exactly in that place." Furnell Daniel, 43, and his wife, Terri Daniel, 30, were rebooked with second-degree murder after Jalen Daniel died.
David Courcelle, Terri Daniel's attorney, said Furnell Daniel described the beating in a phone conversation with his wife the day before Jalen was brought to the hospital as an attempt at disciplining the child that "got out of hand."
Furnell Daniel initially told deputies at the hospital he paddled Jalen Feb. 5 and the child later became unresponsive after falling in the bathtub, Faucetta said. Emergency room doctors told detectives that the fatal injuries were consistent with abuse, Faucetta said, noting a wood splinter was removed from Jalen's head.
Courcelle argued that since Terri Daniel was not present at the time of the beating and could not have known the full extent of the injuries -- since he died from internal injuries -- she should not be criminally culpable for his death.
Courcelle questioned Faucetta about statements Terri Daniel gave about urging her husband to seek medical treatment for the boy prior to the afternoon of Feb. 6. Furnell Daniel did not heed her pleas. She also told deputies she asked Jalen if he needed to go to the hospital, Faucetta confirmed.
"The 14-year-old child said no, and she went to bed," Faucetta said, recalling Terri Daniel's statement.
Faucetta said Terri Daniel was present overnight after the beating when Jalen Daniel exhibited symptoms of neurological damage, such as urinating on himself, vomiting and crying out in pain. The boy was not brought to the hospital until the next day, after he'd become unresponsive, Faucetta testified. "He is loved and will be missed by everyone that knew him," Jalen Daniel's mother said.
Courcelle also argued Terri Daniel might not have known Jalen was paddled with a stick, noting her husband, who was the disciplinarian in the family, previously used a belt to discipline the children.
Faucetta acknowledged Terri Daniel had no intent to hurt or kill the child. When Courcelle noted Terri Daniel displayed concern for the child by asking her husband to seek medical attention for Jalen Daniel, Faucetta responded, "I totally agree."
Jefferson Parish Commissioner Patricia Joyce, though, noted that second-degree murder does not require criminal intent. The part of the statute she said applies to the allegations against Terri Daniel speak to mistreatment or neglect of a juvenile resulting in death.
"This is a difficult case," Joyce said.
Terri Daniel remains jailed on a $100,000 bond. Furnell Daniel remains jaled on a $250,000 bond. A woman who identified herself as Terri Daniel's mother was in the court, along with other relatives, but declined to be interviewed.
Courcelle said the couple had a total of five children between them. In addition to the deceased 14-year-old, the others children were ages 15, 10, 4 and 2.

Daniel, 43, was rebooked Wednesday (Feb. 24) with cruelty to a juvenile, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office arrest report said.
Investigators Feb 6 booked Daniel and his wife, Terri Daniel, 30, with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile after his son, Jalen, 14, was hospitalized in grave condition with a severe head injury.
Authorities accused Furnell Daniel of hitting Jalen Daniel several times with a piece of wood in their Waggaman home Feb. 5. Terri Daniel, Jalen's stepmother, is accused of knowing about the incident but failing to alert authorities or seek medical attention for the boy.
"He is loved and will be missed by everyone that knew him," Jalen Daniel's mother said.
Jalen was pronounced brain dead Feb. 8 of an epidural hemorrhage due to a skull fracture from blunt force trauma, the Jefferson Parish coroner's office said. The Sheriff's Office then upgraded the charges against the couple to second-degree murder.
Detectives interviewed Furnell Daniel's 9-year-old son, who told them his father would hit him with a tent pole, said Lionel "Lon" Burns, Daniel's defense attorney. The Sheriff's Office obtained a warrant for the Daniels' home and found 16 tent poles in the garage, leading to the arrest, Burns said.
The most recent charge is no indication that Furnell Daniel intended to kill Jalen Daniel, Burns said. He characterized his client as a man who wanted to discipline his sons and keep them on the straight and narrow. 14-year-old victim beaten with piece of wood for low grades, JPSO said.
"Unfortunately, that discipline went a bit too far," Burns said. "He made a mistake, but he shouldn't be looked upon as a murderer."
Daniel was being held Friday at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna in lieu of a $310,500 bond.

Jalen Daniel, the Waggaman boy hospitalized Saturday after authorities say he was beaten by his father with a piece of wood, has died, according to the Jefferson Parish coroner's office.
An autopsy performed Thursday morning (Feb, 11) determined Jalen, 14, died of an epidural hemorrhage (bleeding between his brain and skull) due to a skull fracture from blunt force trauma, said Mark Bone, chief death investigator for the coroner's office.
Medical officials pronounced Jalen brain dead on Monday but he remained in the hospital after his relatives made the decision to donate his organs and help others.
"He had the biggest heart and (was) one of the sweetest kids that you wanted to meet," Jalen's mother, LaTonya Kelly said. "He is loved and will be missed by everyone that knew him."
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office detectives arrested Jalen's father, Furnell Daniel, 43, and his stepmother, Terri Daniel, 30, Saturday and booked them with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Investigators upgraded the charges Thursday to second-degree murder, said Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the department.

They finally called 911 around 12:22 p.m. Saturday.
Jalen's loss has been devastating for relatives who've posted photos and memories, including pictures of his infectious smile.
"Anyone that knew him saw that smile everyday," Kelly said.
In addition to pictures, relatives have also posted blue ribbons symbolizing the fight against child abuse.
Furnell and Terri Daniel were being held without bond Thursday at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna.

BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) - The Bossier City father accused of shaking his infant daughter is now facing a murder charge.
Police say 3-month-old Malaysia Morton died from her injuries Monday at University Health hospital in Shreveport.
The child was originally taken to Willis-Knighton Bossier just after 1:00 a.m. Saturday after her father, 27-year-old Sean Christopher Morton, reportedly noticed something was wrong.
Hospital staff contacted police claiming the baby's injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome. The child was then transferred to University Health where she was listed in critical condition. Malaysia Morton ultimately died from her injuries.
During their investigation, authorities arrested Sean Morton, initially charging him with second degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Tuesday, Sean Morton's charges were upgraded to second degree murder following the infant's death.
Sean Morton remains in the Bossier Parish Maximum Security Facility where his bond is set at $500,000.

The child was later taken to University Health in Shreveport where she was listed in critical condition as of Saturday morning.

Police detectives upgraded the count filed against John William Hope, 28, from second-degree cruelty to a juvenile to first-degree murder in the death of his daughter, Josephine Hope, said Cpl. Don Coppola, a police spokesman.
An autopsy conducted Monday resulted in East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr. Beau Clark determining the baby’s death was a homicide.
The staff at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center contacted police Wednesday morning to report that Hope had brought in Josephine with life-threatening injuries — three skull fractures, multiple rib fractures, face and neck bruising, a bloody mouth and bloodshot eyes, according to police reports.
The baby was in critical condition Friday with no brain activity. She died Saturday.
Hope and the baby’s mother, Christine Hope, told doctors their daughter had fallen off a changing table, but emergency room staff said the child’s injuries did not align with the parents’ story, the report says.
“Injuries around the (child’s) neck were consistent with someone grabbing the baby by the neck,” the report says.
The father told police he left the baby on a changing table about 8 a.m. Wednesday while going to get a bottle. After he left the room, he heard a crash and walked back in to find Josephine on the floor, he told police.
He told Christine Hope the same story, and the couple took the baby to the hospital.
Hope also told police a knot on the baby’s head was caused earlier that morning when the baby head-butted him, but he had no explanation for the marks around her neck, the report says. Christine Hope said Josephine had no marks on her before going to sleep the night before.
Hope could face formal murder charges in her death, District Attorney Hillar Moore III said Monday, adding the decision to charge Hope will be left up to a grand jury.
“I anticipate second-degree murder would be an appropriate charge,” he said. “It’ll be some time before it gets to the grand jury because we have other cases before it.”

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Lafayette woman accused of violating a joint custody agreement with her ex-husband and disappearing with their three children, authorities said Wednesday.
Katelyn Cheree Stewart Gauthier, 30, is wanted on three counts of interfering with the custody of a child and one count of obstruction of a court order, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Gauthier left home Sunday with the children, ages 5, 6 and 11, and has not been heard from since that time, the Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday. David Glenn Gauthier, 11, has brown hair, hazel eyes, stands 4-feet 8-inches tall and weighs 90 pounds; Samantha Claire Gauthier, 6, has blonde hair and hazel eyes and weighs 50 pounds; and Emily Gabrielle Gauthier, 5, has brown hair and eyes and weighs 60 pounds.
Deputies are seeking the public’s help in locating the woman and children.
Along with photos of the mother and three children, the Sheriff’s Office has released a photo of the car she was last seen driving, a late model, dark grey Toyota Camry with the license plate number XOA416.
Along with a day-long visit for Father’s Day, Gauthier was supposed to relinquish custody of the children to their father, Hubert Gauthier, 36, of Lafayette, on Monday, court records show.
The divorced couple agreed in May to joint custody. They had been embroiled in a bitter, three-year-long dispute following their petitions for divorce, with each accusing the other of violent behavior, court records show.
Hubert Gauthier pleaded no contest in 2014 to domestic abuse battery and aggravated assault for grabbing his then-wife by the throat, pushing her onto the bed and threatening her by chasing her with a handgun, court records show. The incident happened in May 2012, days before each filed for divorce.
Hubert Gauthier was sentenced to five months in jail, with all but 48 hours suspended; one year of supervised probation; eight, 8-hour days of community service; a domestic violence program and a $300 fine.
Katelyn Gauthier has no criminal record in Lafayette Parish.

Dad charged with attempted 2nd-degree murder for attack on 6-week-old baby; mom loses custody though she was not at home (Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana)
Notice that even though the mother was not at home when Dad assaulted the baby, she has still lost custody. This is very typical. Mothers are very often held responsible for the crimes of others, even when they are not present or otherwise unable to intervene. However, the reverse is seldom true. A father can willingly and deliberately desert an abusive mother with a child, and he is virtually never held responsible for the consequences, either legally or morally.
Somewhat unusual touch here for a mainstream media article. We have pointed out before that shaking babies is a mostly male crime, mostly committed by fathers. All the studies on the matter have substantiated this. But that fact is usually swept under the rug with pleas to "parents" not to shake the baby. In fact, mothers are the LEAST likely shakers, while fathers are the MOST likely shakers.

An infant who the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office said was violently shaken by his father over a month ago has been removed from life support.
"He remains hospitalized in the recovery stage," sheriff's Maj. Malcolm Wolfe said.
Legal custody of the baby, who remains at the Children's Hospital in New Orleans, has been granted to the state Department of Child and Family Services instead of family members at this point, Wolfe added.
After initially being treated for severe brain damage at the Terrebonne General Medical Center in mid-March, the infant was transported to the Children's Hospital for additional treatment.
Medical officials in New Orleans filed a complaint with the Sheriff's Office when they determined the baby, who was 6 weeks old, suffered from brain bleeding and other injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, Wolfe said.
The baby's father, Marty Michael Marcel, 26, of 1855 Bayou Blue Road, was arrested Mar. 19 on an attempted second-degree murder charge.
Marcel remains at the Terrebonne Parish jail on a $75,000 bond. Inflicting cruelty on a juvenile and the perceived severity of injury resulted in the charge, Wolfe said.
If convicted, Marcel faces up to 50 years in prison. Family members interviewed by detectives called Marcel "inexperienced" in caring for his newborn son while his wife was not home, Wolfe said.
According to a 1995 American Academy of Pediatrics paper, 37 percent of those who cause shaken baby syndrome are the biological father, 21 percent involve the mother's boyfriend. 17 percent are women caregivers, 13 percent are the biological mothers and 12 percent are classified as "other."
Dr. Randell Alexander, chief of the Child Protection and Forensic Pediatrics Division at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, said the majority of survivors often have impaired cognitive, visual and motor functions for the rest of their lives.
No information about the baby's long-term prognosis is available, officials said.
A representative from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services declined to provide specifics about the case, but said the department is looking into suitable guardians for the child.
Assistant District Attorney Jason Dagate is reviewing Marcel's case before setting a date for his trial.

Typical shaken baby story. Dad is apparently unemployed and/or unemployed and is serving as "caretaker." Mom is forced into supporting the family, because Dad is unable and/or unwilling to do so. As often happens, disaster ensues, as these men have no patience or nurturing skills. They can't even manage to get the baby medical care. We see this all the time. KENNER, La. —A Kenner man was arrested this week after his 3-month-old infant was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome.
Anthony Hamilton, 25, was charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile for an incident that reportedly happened last Thursday at his home on Florida Avenue.
According to the Kenner Police Department, Hamilton's child was admitted to a hospital where the infant was diagnosed with trauma consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Medical professionals also found several puncture wounds consistent with scabs from fingernail impressions.
During questioning, Hamilton reportedly told officers he was changing the infant's diaper when he noticed the baby's eyes roll back. He said he pinched the baby, who responded, and he did not seek further medical attention.
The KPD said the child's mother returned home from work and noticed something was wrong with the child. The two parents then took the child to the hospital, according to the KPD.
After further questioning, the father admitted to shaking the infant because he was nervous. He was arrested and the Office of Community Services - Child Protection was brought into the investigation.

The father, Marty Michael Marcel, 26, is behind bars after being charged with attempted second-degree murder. Meanwhile, the 6-week-old boy is fighting for his life at Children's Hospital in New Orleans.
Back in Houma, friends and family said they were in complete shock after learning deputies arrested Marcel Thursday night for shaking the baby.
"I can't believe it at all, very shocking," says a friend, who asked not to be identified. "I'm still in shock."
Terrebonne Parish deputies say, on Sunday, the newborn's parents rushed him to the hospital after he started having seizures.
It was there that doctors discovered the baby had bruises on his body and damage to two thirds of his brain. An injury consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
"This child will never have a normal life and right now we are not sure if the child is going to make it or not, but if the child does make it he still won't be normal," says Major Malcolm Wolfe, with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say Marcel was home alone with the baby while his mother was at work.
Marcel told investigators the newborn would not stop crying and that he was just trying to discipline the baby, but Marcel says he did not intentionally hurt his son.
"He is cooperating and is taking responsibility," says Wolfe. "He was in possession of child when the child was injured."
A close friend of Marcel's says he never thought he could be capable of something like this.
"What I knew, he was a good guy, you couldn't ask for better," says his friend. "Never had to deal with him, he's a quiet guy."
Marcel's friends says, as a father himself, his thoughts are with the newborn and the rest of the family during this difficult time.
"I hope they get through it, I hope the baby pulls through, that's the most that I hope," says the friend. "Anything else, that justice is served, but I just hope the baby pulls through this."

"Funding debates" delay 2nd-degree murder trials of custodial dad, step; 5-year-old daughter killed in 2008 despite child abuse allegations to CPS (Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana)
An update to the killer dads and custody lists.
Given that this case has been going on since 2008, the latest delays from last summer appear to be just so more bullsh** --but piled higher and deeper.
It was not until 2010--two years after the little girl's death from blunt force trauma to the head--that these two were charged, though they were initially arrested after the incident. As often happens with abusive custodial fathers, there were numerous complaints of child abuse made to CPS that were never properly investigated. The non-custodial mother and her family have been outraged by the kid-glove treatment these two have received and all the endless delays. The protective mother filed suit against the state for wrongful death in 2011.

Funding for expert witnesses in Barbara Vincent’s second-degree murder case has been provided.
Walt Sanchez, an attorney representing the Calcasieu Public Defenders Office, presented a $6,000 check to the court Wednesday. An extra $3,000 is also available, District Defender Harry Fontenot said.
Prosecutors had asked for financial information from the state Public Defender Board. Even though the money was going to be provided, prosecutors previously asked Judge David Ritchie to order the board to disclose its financial records because indigent defense is an ongoing issue. Ritchie agreed and granted the request.
Some financial information was presented Tuesday. Ritchie also ordered the nine non-profit organizations the board funds to provide records of leases, budgets, financial reports to the board, contracts, audits and a list of contracts that led to funding.
“I want to see the bank statements,” said prosecutor Hugo Holland, who represented the state along with Carla Sigler. Barbara Vincent and William Vincent are accused of killing William Vincent’s 5-year-old daughter, Savannah, in 2008. Funding debates have delayed the case.
Barbara Vincent is represented by private attorney Leah White, but White has asked for $9,000 for expert witnesses. Fontenot said the money was paid from the local Public Defenders Office.
The money was not available when White initially made the request because the Calcasieu Public Defenders Office was struggling financially, but is now on better ground, said Jay Dixon, who was the area’s previous district defender and is now head of the Public Defender Board. The state board does not have power to tell individual districts how to spend money, he said.
The local Public Defenders Office receives about 40 percent of its budget from the state board, while the other 60 percent comes from local fees, mostly through traffic tickets, Fontenot said.
Since 2011, public defenders around the state have been appointed to 600,000 cases, Dixon said.
The state board gets $33 million annually from the state board — $17 million is divvied up among the 42 local districts, $13 million goes to the nine non-profit organizations and $3 million is used to finance the board’s operation, Dixon said.
Some of the non-profit organizations specialize in capital defense and some in appeals.
Around $9 million of the $17 million funds capital defense, Dixon said. There are about 90 people around the state facing the death penalty, he said.
Holland, along with District Attorney John DeRosier, have said that they believe that such a large portion of the money is being used toward capital defense so that the death-penalty becomes too expensive of an option to pursue.
“It’s the position of the state that the funding crisis is one intentionally created by the state indigent defense board, not Jay, but members of the board,” Holland said.
Dixon said capital defense is just expensive.
“They don’t really have a choice,” he said. “Capital litigation is the most closely scrutinized and are the cases that courts are most quick to reverse.”
Many experts are needed and the Supreme Court requires a lead attorney, a second-chair attorney, a fact investigator and a mitigation investigator, Dixon said.

The son who was killed, Zamion Willis, died from head injuries and multiple fractures, but at the time of his death there wasn’t enough evidence for prosecutors to charge his father.
After a daycare worker discovered suspicious injuries on Willis’s other son in 2012, officers noted the child seemed lethargic at the family’s home in the 6100 block of Tierra Drive. And when additional evidence was gathered linking Willis to the 2007 killing, he was charged with first degree murder for the death of Zamion and second-degree cruelty in the case of the other child.
UPDATE: At a hearing set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in front of Judge O’Callaghan in Caddo District court, Willis’s attorneys will argue their motion for continuance. The date of the jury trial, which had been set for last November, is now Oct. 13.

Jay'v'une Bergin died at a local hospital after suffering multiple brain bleeds, bruising of various stages of healing and contusions to the forehead along with signs of malnourishment.
His father, Vernell Day, is now being booked on first-degree murder charges.
Coppola says Day's son was taken to the hospital around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. Hospital personnel then contacted the police to report a possible child abuse. Police then executed a search warrant at the home on 48th Street, where they found a handgun and placed Day under arrest.
Coppola said police had enough evidence to apprehend Day. Coppola said Day, 36, refused to make any statements to law enforcement regarding the allegations. However, when Day was being transported to the Parish Prison, he told reporters, "I did not beat my son."
Coppola says Day was the primary caretaker of his son and the child's mother was currently not in the picture. Coppola added that the boy might have other siblings.
Day was also booked on a felon in possession of a firearm charge.

Custodial dad charged with murder in beating death of 5-year-old son (Baton Rouge, Louisiana)
Read this carefully between the lines. Dad VARNELL DAY JR. was custodial, and apparently had been custodial for a while.
We're told the father and son lived together. Given the evidence of malnutrition and healing injuries, Dad had been abusing the boy for a long time. There is ZERO mention of a mother in the home or elsewhere. If there was a mother who was involved, even periodically, then she obviously would have been arrested on abuse and failure to protect charges.
Notice ONCE AGAIN that the reporter feels no compulsion to tell us how or why this little boy ended up with this brutal man in this isolated prison cell (neighbors rarely saw the boy. Men don't give birth, so obviously Daddy had to gain control by eliminating the mother somehow. But how?
Once again, we have the standard questions, the questions that are never raised by these reporters. Is the mother deceased? If so, do we know that it was from natural causes? Is she "missing"? Given Dad's propensity towards violence, that should raise questions right there. Did this control freak/abuser strip her of custody through the family courts and/or CPS? Again, silence. But it is hardly unheard of for fathers to wage a custody battle, only to kill the child they just had to have.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man who lives in the neighborhood of the father arrested in the beating death of his 5-year-old son said the dad was quiet and the child was rarely seen.
Varnell Day Jr., 36, of Baton Rouge, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Thursday morning on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his son, Jay'v'une Bergin. Day was speechless and visibly angry as he was being taken back to prison. He is accused of savagely beating his son. The little boy died shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The blinds are all closed with newspaper keeping the sun out and a private property sign is propped in the window of the home on North 48th Street where the pair lived. It is the place where investigators said the beating took place.
"The little boy had multiple brain bleeds, bruising, which consisted of various stages of healing, along with contusions to the head with signs of malnutrition," Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. with the Baton Rouge Police Department said.
Neighbors said they saw an ambulance arrive at the home on Monday. The 5-year-old was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries. John Green, a neighbor who has lived one block off Gus Young Avenue all his life, said Day usually kept to himself and they rarely saw the little boy.
"The kid don't be outside enough," Green said. "Like we will be out here, he will take them to school and pick him up. After that, they would be inside."
Green added Day had only been at the home for the past couple of years and he simply saw him in passing.
"I couldn't really believe he would beat a child like that. I don't see how you can have a heart to beat a child so bad like that," Green explained.
Day was originally arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted first-degree murder, but the charges were upgraded and he was re-arrested after the boy succumbed to his injuries.
The Louisiana Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) was reportedly called in on this case, but there has been no response from officials about requests for comment.

If there was a mother who was involved, even periodically, then she obviously would have been arrested on abuse and failure to protect charges.
Notice ONCE AGAIN that the reporter feels no compulsion to tell us how or why this little boy ended up with this brutal man in this isolated prison cell (neighbors rarely saw the boy. Men don't give birth, so obviously Daddy had to gain control by eliminating the mother somehow. But how?
Once again, we have the standard questions, the questions that are never raised by these reporters. Is the mother deceased? If so, do we know that it was from natural causes? Is she "missing"? Given Dad's propensity towards violence, that should raise questions right there. Did this control freak/abuser strip her of custody through the family courts and/or CPS? Again, silence. But it is hardly unheard of for fathers to wage a custody battle, only to kill the child they just had to have.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man who lives in the neighborhood of the father arrested in the beating death of his 5-year-old son said the dad was quiet and the child was rarely seen.
Varnell Day Jr., 36, of Baton Rouge, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Thursday morning on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his son, Jay'v'une Bergin. Day was speechless and visibly angry as he was being taken back to prison. He is accused of savagely beating his son. The little boy died shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The blinds are all closed with newspaper keeping the sun out and a private property sign is propped in the window of the home on North 48th Street where the pair lived. It is the place where investigators said the beating took place.
"The little boy had multiple brain bleeds, bruising, which consisted of various stages of healing, along with contusions to the head with signs of malnutrition," Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. with the Baton Rouge Police Department said.
Neighbors said they saw an ambulance arrive at the home on Monday. The 5-year-old was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries. John Green, a neighbor who has lived one block off Gus Young Avenue all his life, said Day usually kept to himself and they rarely saw the little boy.
"The kid don't be outside enough," Green said. "Like we will be out here, he will take them to school and pick him up. After that, they would be inside."
Green added Day had only been at the home for the past couple of years and he simply saw him in passing.
"I couldn't really believe he would beat a child like that. I don't see how you can have a heart to beat a child so bad like that," Green explained.
Day was originally arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted first-degree murder, but the charges were upgraded and he was re-arrested after the boy succumbed to his injuries.
The Louisiana Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) was reportedly called in on this case, but there has been no response from officials about requests for comment.

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - A Metairie man accused of murdering his girlfriend is on the run after police say he abducted three of her five children.
Police issued a warrant for the arrest of 43-year-old Pedro Alberto Monterroso-Navas on the charge of Second-Degree Murder. According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office, Monterroso-Navas is in the country illegally. Police say that he may also go by the name Wilson Rigoberto Mina.
Investigators believe Monterroso-Navas fled the scene of his girlfriend's murder early this morning with three children: 12-year-old Jessica Nicolle Monterroso, 4-year-old Yojan Manuel Monterroso-Flores and 2-year-old Jafet Abigaitl Monterroso-Monroy.
Monterroso-Navas is the biological father of all three missing children, but the deceased is the biological mother of 2-year-old Jafet and two children that were left at the scene.
Officers came out to the scene of the murder after police say the two children left behind, a 5-year-old and 8-year-old found their 25-year-old mother dead early Sunday morning in the 4000 block of Durand Street.
The two children knocked on their neighbors door around 3:35 a.m. on July 13 to tell them something was wrong with their mother, according to Sheriff Newell Normand with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. The 5-year-old and 8-year-old have no relationship to Monterroso-Navas and are currently with the Department for Child and Family Services.
Police were on the scene shortly after and found the body of the 25-year-old woman unconscious in her bathtub with a blunt force trauma wound to the head according to a release from the JPSO.
The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Police have not released the woman's identity pending notification of the family.
Pedro Monterroso-Navas is described as a 43-year-old hispanic male with brown hair.He was last seen wearing black pants and a blue shirt and walks with a limp.
Photos of two of the missing children, 12-year-old Jessica Nicolle Monterroso and 2-year-old Jafter Abigaitl Monterroso-Monroy are included with the story. We will add a photo of 4-year-old Yojan Manuel Monterroso-Flores when it becomes available.
