Pietermaritzburg - “I hate him and he will never see me again,” were the words written by a 13-year-old Pietermaritzburg girl who was raped by her biological father.

In a victim impact statement handed to regional magistrate Jennifer Anthoo on Tuesday, the teenager poured out her feelings of anger, hatred, fear and guilt caused by the repeated rapes by her “pa”.

“He destroyed my life and it would be better if he was dead as he will never make it in prison… I hate him and he will never see me again,” she declared.

The girl said her father had taken her virginity, which she had wanted to save for when she marries.

“My pa had to be a vark [pig] and mess up my life … He held me down and hurt me.”

When she was unwilling to submit, she said, he threatened her and said that if he caught her sleeping with other men she would die.

Guilty plea

The 39-year-old Scottsville man pleaded guilty in March to one count of rape, but admitted that he had raped his daughter on various occasions between last December and 4 March this year.

In his plea, he said he became aroused on seeing his daughter in a swimming costume while they were swimming together in December, and that was when he raped her for the first time. Later he repeatedly engaged in sexual acts with her.

Writing in Afrikaans in her victim impact statement, the child said she was glad her father was out of her life and could no longer hurt her.

“He messed up my life. I was ashamed to show my face at school. I lost all my friends thanks to him,” she wrote.

She said she was not proud of herself. She knew she could have stopped the rapes a year ago, but was too afraid to speak out.

“I was so afraid every time I was alone with my pa because I knew what would happen. I am glad he is now where he belongs. He was never there for me. He just used me.

“My life is better without him and everyone is happy.”

She stated that whenever her friends came to visit her, her father would make them feel afraid.

Mother 'betrayed and heartbroken'

Her mother said in a statement that she was shocked to find out what her husband of 14 years had done.

“I felt betrayed and heartbroken. Now I am alone with my daughters and very scared for what is waiting for me and them. Now I must make it on my own,” she said.

She said she had no income or medical aid and had been left with her husband’s debts as well as her own. She was looking for work to make a fresh start.

She has moved to Gauteng with her children and said she would never be the same again emotionally; she felt very traumatised.

She indicated in broken English that when he used to drink, her husband would swear and scream at them.

“That used to scare me. I never knew what to expect from him. One day he can be good and the next moment he gets angry. I always used to live in fear for myself and my daughters. Now I am the only one who is there for them.”

Regional court prosecutor Ricky van Wyk said a probation officer tried to interview the accused at New Prison in Pietermaritzburg, but reported that on the two occasions that he went there the accused failed to answer to his name.

With the help of the investigating officer, the official interviewed the accused on Tuesday, but his report is still awaited.

The court adjourned the case to 26 April for the report to be made available before sentencing takes place.

The accused was warned previously that he faces a prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment unless the court can find substantial and compelling circumstances that would justify a lower sentence.

He said he understood, but nevertheless chose to plead guilty.
