Police are investigating a possible case of child abuse after a 3-month-old boy was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital with a leg fracture.

Officers were called shortly before 8 p.m. March 18 to Mercy Health Center in reference to the injured child.

Medical staff said the child's father told doctors he lifted the baby by the ankles to change his diaper, and his son started to roll away from him.

The father said he went to pull the child back toward him when he heard a popping sound, according to the report.

A doctor said the story was not consistent with the type of injury the infant suffered.

“It takes a tremendous amount of twisting force,” the doctor told police, adding that the child would need surgery.

Police said the father appeared visibly upset.

The father told officers he knew something was wrong with his son when the baby became quiet and wouldn't move his left leg.

The case is under investigation.

Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said the child has been released from the hospital and placed in protective custody.
