Dad charged in attempted murder of his two young children (Northglenn, Colorado)

Notice that this POS of a father already had defacto custody/possession of the kids. The mom was just trying to verify the well-being of her kids, a job which the local cops had messed up entirely despite Dad's erratic driving--through Mom's front yard. So she was forced to go over to this home personally, only to be seriously assaulted. But she was able to call 911 after the nutso abuser daddy set the house on fire with both kids in it.

It is sickening that the authorities allowed this idiot to maintain control over these two kids, when he was obviously a violent, control freak fruitcake. Unfortunately, the authorities don't want to tangle with these types either, so these kinds of daddies are often successful in obliteraring their families. Or at least coming close, like dad WILLIAM JOHNSON.

NORTHGLENN, Colo. -- A father still hospitalized after a fire at his duplex has been charged in the attempted murder of his two young children.

William Johnson is facing charges of attempted murder, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, arson, assault, criminal mischief and aggravated cruelty to animals.

Police said Johnson set fire to his Northglenn duplex in February with his 6-year-old daughter and 20-month-old son inside. It happened after a dispute with his estranged wife.

When firefighters got inside the home, they found Johnson and the children unconscious. They were all hospitalized in critical condition. Johnson is still hospitalized from injuries sustained in the fire, but prosecutors would not release any other details.

When the girl was found, she had burns over 50 percent of her body, including on her face, chest and arms, the girl's grandfather told 7NEWS.

The boy was not burned, but suffered massive smoke inhalation, the grandfather said.

Mom Beaten While On 911 Call

Johnson's estranged wife called Northglenn police at 4:20 a.m. on the day of the fire saying Johnson had attacked her outside the duplex.

The woman had filed for divorce from Johnson in January and was not living with him, the woman's father said.

But she was concerned about the children's welfare after she said Johnson drove over the grass of the Aurora apartment complex where she was living around 2:10 a.m.

She called Aurora police to report the situation and asked for a welfare check on her children. She said she believed that Johnson was driving back to Northglenn.

Aurora police then called Northglenn police, asking them contact a "hit-and-run suspect" and check on the children's well-being.

Police said Northglenn officers stopped Johnson is a vehicle near the York Street duplex and found that the children appeared to be OK. Because Aurora police did not have any charges against Johnson, he was not detained, said Northglenn police Commander Jeremy Sloan.

But the mother was still worried about her kids, so she drove to the duplex around 4:20 a.m. and clicked a garage door opener to enter the home.

She saw smoke pouring out of the garage and called 911.

Police said the smoke was actually from the car, which had been left running in the garage.

As the woman was on the phone with 911 dispatchers, Johnson walked out of the home through the garage and began attacking her, slamming her head into the garage wall, the grandfather said.

Johnson then rushed back into the home and used furniture to barricade himself inside, police said.

Police responding to the 911 call found the distraught, battered mother outside, telling them she had been assaulted by her estranged husband, Johnson. She said Johnson was inside the home and possibly trying to kill their children.

A neighbor told 7NEWS she heard a woman screaming outside.

The neighbor, Jeanne Sparkman, said Johnson's wife was screaming, "He's trying to kill my kids!" and was holding her hand to a huge bump on her forehead.

"Her face ... her head ... her forehead was like two times the size of a normal forehead. She had blood running down the side of her face. Her eyes were practically closed. It was awful," said Sparkman.

Officers Force Their Way Through Barricade After Flash Fire

When police officers tried to contact Johnson at the front door, they discovered the duplex was on fire.

The officers forced their way past a barricaded front door and tried to rescue the occupants, but were forced back by heavy smoke. The Northglenn officers were also treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital and released.

North Metro Fire Rescue firefighters said when they arrived they found a large fire on the stairs leading to the second floor.

Firefighters said they found Johnson and the two children in separate bedrooms on the second floor.
