Death of 2 1/2-year-old boy being investigated as a homicide; lived with custodial dad, step (Webb, Saskatchewan, Canada)

When we first reported on this story, little was known. Now we know that the boy's death was in fact a homicide, and that it apparently took place in the home of his custodial father. As is typical in these cases, the boy's mother, the woman who actually gave birth to him, has been "disappeared" from the story. What happened to the mother? Is she dead? "Disappeared" herself? If not, how did this UNNAMED DAD get custody and why?

The death of 2½ year old boy in rural Saskatchewan is being investigated as a homicide, RCMP say.

The boy has been identified as William Michael Vayro, who was living with his biological father and step-mother.

Police said the child was found dead Saturday afternoon in his home near Webb, Sask., about 25 kilometres west of Swift Current.

Initially police said the case was a sudden death. It was being investigated as a homicide following the results of an autopsy that was done on Monday..

Police said they would not release the cause of death because of their ongoing investigation.

Officers were in the home Tuesday on the strength of a search warrant.

Earlier police reported that the boy had been put down for a nap in the late morning on Saturday and was discovered later that afternoon to be unresponsive in his bed.

An ambulance from Swift Current was contacted and arrived on scene shortly after 4 p.m. CST Saturday. Police said the boy was already dead.
