Dad arrested for shaking 4-month-old son (Athens, Alabama)

Dad PATRICK ONEAL COLWELL has been charged with aggravated child abuse for shaking his 4-month-old son. The baby was unresponsive when police arrived.

An Athens man has been charged with injuring his 4-month-old son by shaking him.

An Athens man has been charged with injuring his 4-month-old son by shaking him.


Patrick Oneal Colwell, 21, 804 N. Clinton Street was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated child abuse, said Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce.

Officer Daniel McNatt responded to a call at the baby’s neighbor’s house, where the child’s mother had taken the baby.

The child was unresponsive when McNatt arrived at the scene, Bruce said.

The baby’s mother reported she asked Colwell to give the baby a bath. When she heard the baby screaming, she went to check on the baby and saw Colwell shaking him, Bruce said.

The mother call an ambulance from the neighbor’s home. The baby was transferred to Athens-Limestone Hospital where doctors found bruises on his nose and shoulder and a red mark on his neck.

Det.-Sgt. Dustin Lansford investigated the case.

Colwell was transferred to the Limestone County Jail.
