LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — A 20-year-old man has been arrested for suspicion of murder in the death of his infant son, Lewiston police said.
Cody A. Gossage was booked into the Nez Perce County jail. He's scheduled to appear in court on Monday, The Lewiston Tribune reported Saturday.
According to police, officers responded to a call for help and found the 5-month-old old Jordan Big Man-Gossage unconscious and not breathing. He was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment, but he was flown to Seattle within a few hours for advanced treatment because of severe brain trauma.
He died two days later in what police described as "non-accidental traumatic event."
Detectives with the Lewiston Police Department conducted interviews with doctors and specialists who treated Big Man-Gossage, and reviewed medical reports, according to the police department. They then interviewed family members before deciding to arrest Gossage on the first-degree murder charge.
Deputy Chief Roger Lanier said the severity of the charge is mandated by Idaho law because the child involved is younger than 12 years old. Idaho Code stipulates that any murder that occurs during the commission of an aggravated battery on a child younger than 12 is classified as first-degree murder.
More details on the investigation will be available on Monday when the probable cause affidavit is made public.
