A 29-year-old Olympia man pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault of a child in Thurston County Superior Court on Wednesday morning after he allegedly hit his 7-year-old son with a belt.
The man was arrested after an elementary school employee reported that the boy had extensive bruising on his buttocks, legs and ankles, and was in so much pain that he was unable to sit down in class, according to court documents. The child told Thurston County Sheriff’s deputies that he and his two brothers had been hit with a belt by their father because they didn’t go to sleep when they were supposed to.
Deputies also talked to the boy’s brother, who didn’t have any visible bruises. The brother said that his father decided that each boy would receive three slaps with a belt as punishment, but if the boys jumped, they would receive an extra slap. The brother said the 7-year-old jumped several times and received extra slaps, according to court documents.
Deputies contacted the father, who admitted to hitting his son with a belt, but said that he only hit the child on the buttocks and any marks elsewhere weren’t his fault, according to court documents. The man was arrested and later released on $2,500 bail.
