A 40-year-old father of two girls is facing charges of child neglect and cruelty toward a child, after police said he left his 4- and 9-year-old daughters alone at home and his eldest daughter had to call police after not feeling well.
Filiberto Castillo Mejia, of suburban West Palm Beach, was arrested by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday afternoon. He remained at the Palm Beach County Jail on Monday afternoon on $2,000 bail.
Police initially saw the girls at Palms West Hospital, where rescue crews took them after the 9-year-old said she became sick after her father went to work.
The girl, who was not identified because she is a minor, told police she had a cell phone she could only use to dial 911, and she used it to call for help when she felt sick. She said Mejia left for work around 6 a.m. Saturday and was not expected to come home until 5 p.m.
The two girls were left alone, without supervision, and the older daughter was left to care for her little sister, police said.
