Dad to face murder charges after infant son removed from life support (Atlanta, Georgia)

Dad JAMAL THOMAS is accused of injuring his then 9-week-old son back in January. It is now evident that the baby will not survive being removed from life support, so Dad will have his charges upgraded to murder. No mention here of whether Dad was babysitting or what.

FAYETTE COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - A metro Atlanta father will soon face murder charges after his son is taken off life support.

Jamal Thomas is accused of causing injuries to his 9-week-old baby in early February, including blunt force trauma to the head. The felony cruelty to children charge is expected to be upgraded, when the baby is taken off life support Sunday.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office police report shows the incident happened at Thomas' home on North Fayette Drive in Fayetteville. Neighbors were saddened to learn what happened.

"Anger and stupidity. And I know there's a lot of background stuff that can cause a man to go crazy like that, but you've still got choices and that's not a good one," said neighbor Mercer Hill.

The police report said Thomas called 911 on Feb. 4 after his son had trouble breathing while he was feeding him. He was later taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where he showed no brain activity. The report goes on to say hospital workers suspected child abuse and called the Sheriff's office.

"Very difficult to hear. And then you think about the child," said Hill.

The baby will be taken off life support on Sunday. Thomas is expected to be charged with murder early next week.
