ROBBINSVILLE — A father was charged Thursday in connection with the death of his 2-month-old daughter, who suffered skull fractures and brain hemorrhaging, according to authorities.
Jermie Cahoon, 34, of Milltown Road, was charged with child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. The Graham County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the infant’s death since Sunday, when Cahoon called 911 and asked for an ambulance, said Detective Jerry Crisp. Cahoon told a dispatcher the baby was sick and having problems.
Medical personnel tried to revive the infant, but she was later pronounced dead at Swain County Hospital. Crisp said Cahoon lives at the Milltown Road residence with the child’s mother, who was at work Sunday.
Crisp said he could not discuss what led to the skull fractures and brain hemorrhaging, injuries detailed in a report by a medical examiner.
“The investigation is continuing, and we foresee further charges,” he said.
Authorities also charged Cahoon with resisting public officers and disorderly conduct. Crisp said Cahoon got into an argument with some of his family Thursday. When officers arrived on the scene, Cahoon resisted and struggled with officers. He was cursing at and threatening people and wouldn’t comply with commands, Crisp said.
Cahoon was also charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Crisp said he was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.
