Dad NAT NAPPER is accused of beating his 4-month-old son, who developed a critical brain injury as a result. The baby is now on life support.

TOLEDO, OH (WTVG) -- A Toledo man is in the Lucas County jail, charged for beating his 4-month-old son.

The baby is on life support at the Toledo Hospital.

Police say the incident happened at Norwich apartments on Reynolds in south Toledo. The baby was hit so badly in the head, his brain began to bleed.

He did make it through emergency surgery today, but he remains on life support. His mother says she doesn't know why the father beat the baby.

Nicole Johnson called 9-1-1 Friday when she noticed that something was wrong with 4-month-old Nyzear. Police say the baby's father Nate Napper hit the baby several times in the head, causing his brain to bleed.

Today, Napper was in court, charged with child endangering.

Neighbors say they thought Napper was a good guy. Johnson said she couldn't believe what happened either.

Her main concern right now is Nyzear's recovery. Johnson wants her baby's father to pay for what he's done to little Nyzear.

Napper's bond was set at $500,000 with no percent.
