VICTORVILLE • A baby girl will have limited motor skills, reduced vision and a lifetime of learning disabilities because of head trauma — allegedly at the hands of her father, according to court testimony.
Devhon Williams, 20, of Victorville, appeared in court on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on two counts of willful cruelty to a child.
Williams’ daughter, who was 7-months-old at the time, stopped breathing at her home in the 16000 block of Indian Summer Street in Victorville on March 18, according to officials.
The baby had bruises on her head and face, and Dr. Amy Young of Loma Linda University Medical Center said brain bleeding probably caused the breathing problem, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detective Randy German testified. Young told German the injuries were consistent with physical abuse.
Deputy District Attorney Kathy DiDonato said Williams told different stories to investigators about how his daughter got injured.
But Deputy Public Defender Luke Byward argued that nobody could give an opinion that Williams inflicted the damage.
Judge Eric Nakata ruled there is enough evidence for Williams to stand trial on the charges. If convicted he could face up to 15 years in prison, according to Byward.
