RHINELANDER, Wis. (WSAU) – A father will spend 12 years in prison for the drug overdose death of his 10-month-old daughter.
Matthew Lonkoski pled guilty to child abuse and neglecting a child leading to death. Prosecutors charged Lonkoski after his daughter Peyton swallowed a morphine pill while Lonkoski was high and playing a video game with a friend in May 2009.
Oneida County Judge Mark Mangerson factored in a number of reasons for the sentence but said the 23-year-old Lonkoski selfishly feared his own consequences and not those of his young daughter. He also criticized Lonkoski for not helping the girl after she swallowed the pill.
A jury acquitted the child mother’s, Amanda Bodoh, during a trial in January.
