The trucker who murdered his girlfriend's daughter is believed to have sexually assaulted her, police said yesterday.
Darren Walker may have strangled Stacey Lawrence after the nine-year woke up during the assault in his cab.
The pair had shared a macaroni supper and watched the youngster's favourite television show in a lay-by at Warmington, Northamptonshire.
Walker, who had taken Stacey on a trip to deliver groceries for the Spar chain as a 'treat', was found hanged in woodland close by. He had used the same woven industrial cord with which Stacey was killed.
Last night, it was claimed that Walker had made sexual advances towards another girlfriend's under-age daughter. Detectives said they will investigate.
Police have disclosed that Stacey - who called 40-year-old Walker 'dad' - had marks on her body consistent with sexual touching. But a post-mortem ruled out the possibility that she had been raped.
Her mother Roxanne Lawrence, 38, told of her shock and bafflement. She said the couple had been planning to marry after 18 months together.
Mrs Lawrence said: 'I'm trying to be angry with Darren but I'm finding it really difficult, because I loved him.
'He has just shocked everyone. He never ever went upstairs to her bedroom, he never gave us any reason to contemplate that he could do something like that.
'The thing that hurts most is knowing that Stacey was in pain in her final moments.'
Detective Chief Inspector Tricia Kirk of Northamptonshire Police said: 'From what we found in the cab it would look as though Stacey was asleep in the bunk, then something has taken place and Stacey was strangled.

'Has she woken up and that's why he strangled her? The only people who know what happened are dead.'
DCI Kirk said officers had received an allegation that Walker made 'sexual advances' to the 15-year-old daughter of a previous partner.
She said the allegation came from a third party and officers were contacting the teenager, who is now in her 20s.
Neither the woman or her mother would comment, but a source said: 'When she heard what Darren had done, she broke down and predicted that he must have been abusing Stacey.'
A second source said Walker 'tried it on' with another of the girlfriend's daughters, who was then 20.
It also emerged yesterday that shortly after that relationship ended in 2005, Walker, from Bilston, West Midlands, married a woman 13 years his junior.
DCI Kirk said the relationship was volatile and the woman, who has not been named, told police he often assaulted her.
Walker, who is understood to have at least one grown-up child from a previous relationship, was cautioned for assault in 2006, but none of the other offences were reported to police. Walker had no other convictions.
