WINDSOR, N.C. -- Authorities in a rural northeastern North Carolina community are charging a man with killing his wife and two children in 1972.
Authorities say Roy Lawrence Rascoe, 68, has been charged with first-degree murder and arson in a fire that burned the family's Bertie County home.
Authorities say 23-year-old Annie Smallwood Rascoe, and the couple's children Rita, 1, and Tony, 3, were killed.
Rascoe was assigned an attorney at a hearing Wednesday, but the lawyer didn't immediately return a telephone message. Rascoe was being held in jail without bond.
Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins says the arrest was based on new evidence uncovered, but he would not give any specifics.
Rascoe was recently released from federal prison for a theft conviction.
