Dad arrested for shooting mom; 11-year-old daughter was witness (Tooele, Utah)

Dad JACK VANGRIMBERGEN has been arrested in the shooting of his wife who is in critical condition. The 11-year-old daughter was a witness; her mother told her "to run," so she did.

As is typical, we have the usual deliberate feigned ignorance in this article: The police say they were "not aware" of any prior domestic violence incidents at the home. But the reporter doesn't point out that many victims never call the police, so that this is an unreliable indicator of past domestic violence. Maybe they should ask Mom's family and friends what they know.

As for "motive," there is a slew of research as to how and why abusers injure and kill women and children. Basically, abusers see women and children as little more than possesions that can be treated with the care you'd bring to crumpled Kleenex. Check it out!

This article also does the standard "clueless neighbor/nice guy" interview, in which it is claimed that the shooter was "the type of guy who would do anything for you." Really? Even shoot you? Why do we waste our time interviewing people who don't know anything? Again, talk to Mom's family and friends--they might know something. Talk to local domestic violence people--they might be able to put this into perpspective for the reporter.

Come on all you journalists out there, try to educate yourselves on the issue you write about!

Tooele woman shot; husband arrested

TOOELE -- A Tooele man is in jail, accused of shooting his wife while his daughter watched.

The woman was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition Thursday night with at least two gunshot wounds. Police arrested her husband, 44-year-old Jack Vangrimbergen, on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence in the presence of a child.

Officers were called to a home near 200 West and 400 North around 5:45 Thursday night after receiving a call about shots fired. When they arrived they found the woman injured in the driveway and her husband inside the home.

Lt. Paul Wimmer of the Tooele Police Department said, "The male was on scene. He was called out, was unwounded. He was taken into custody. We recovered a weapon as well."

Police say two family members were at the house. One was the couple's 11-year-old daughter who reported her father was responsible for the shooting. She told neighbors she thought it was a Halloween prank at first. She said then her mother told her to run, so she did.

Tooele police are not aware of any history of violence at the couple's home and don't know a motive for the shooting.

Neighbors say they were unaware of any problems. One neighbor describe the husband as they type of guy that would do anything for you.
