8-Day-Old Baby's Leg Broken; Dad Arrested For Abuse

An 8-day-old baby is being treated for a broken leg, and Wichita Police say the injury was the result of abuse.
Just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, a woman brought her baby to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, and told doctor's his leg was accidentally broken when she was changing his diaper.
Her story didn't add up and hospital staff called Police. Officers from the Exploited and Missing Child unit arrived and questioned the 24-year-old mother, who then admitted that the child's father had abused the baby, breaking his leg.
Police later arrested a 27-year-old man for child abuse. Formal charges have not yet been filed.

WATERLOO (KWWL) - The trial started Wednesday for a Cedar Falls man accused of killing his 18-month-old son.
Daniel Reddout is accused of suffocating his son Kaleb at the Midway Motel on April 4, 2011. Authorities say Reddout suffocated Kaleb to get him to sleep.
Starting Wednesday morning, the prosecution called some of their first witnesses -- including Jeff Bond, one of two paramedics on scene. Bond said they were dispatched at around 8 p.m. the night of April 4 for a cardiac arrest. He was told Kaleb had been napping for about two hours before the people inside the room tried waking him up.
Bond says a woman was trying to do CPR, but stopped when she saw him enter the room.
"He appeared lifeless. Which is your first visual examination of the patient, and then of course when you can lay your hands on them, taking a pulse there was no pulse, no spontaneous breathing. The patient was obviously -- the skin color was poor," said Bond.
Bond says normally it's hard to revive a child from cardiac arrest.
The prosecution also called Dana Hacker, a friend of Reddout's girlfriend and Kaleb's mother.
He says when Reddout would attempt to put Kaleb to sleep, it wouldn't take him a long time, and the night of April 4 was no exception.
He says Kaleb was crying when Reddout was trying to put him down for a nap. Hacker says Reddout yelled at Kaleb and held him down, but that's all Hacker could see.
Hacker says it was a few hour later when they checked on Kaleb.
"I had called 911 because I knew that that wasn't normal at all," said Hacker. "And I told them that they needed to get over there now and Dan had just been screaming, 'My boy, my boy, not my boy.'"
Hacker says Kaleb was asleep for a few hours and he was concerned, but never said anything to Reddout.
Hacker also says Kaleb's skin looked pale with red blotchy patches.
Reddout is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of child endangerment.

NEW INFO: Suspect In Baby Murder Was Former Detention Officer

A former detention officer for a county near Charlotte has been charged in Pitt County with killing his five month old baby.
28-year-old Johnathan Brooks was arrested Wednesday for the murder of his son, Ayden, who was five months old when he died in July. He was rushed to the hospital after the father called 911, saying the baby was not responsive. The baby spent the night at Vidant Medical Center but was taken off life support the following day.
Sheriff Elks says the baby was in the care of his father when he suffered the head injury. The baby's mother also lives in the home, as do her parents.
The Attorney General's Office says Brooks was certified as a detention officer with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office from November 2010 to January 2012.
Brooks is behind bars under a $2 million bond following his first appearance Thursday morning.

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – It was a crime that sent shock waves through Central Virginia.
In the midst of a bitter custody battle, police said a Hanover County mother walked in to find her twin girls murdered in their beds by their father.
Kristi King, the girls’ mother, said she begged the court system for help and hopes her story will force family courts to listen to parents who express fear for their children’s safety.
“I sent my lawyer and the guardian ad litem pictures of them in their casket. I was angry,” said King during an interview with WUSA’s Andrea McCarren.
Rob King bought each of his twin daughters a fish, signed them up for swim lessons and gave them a bath. Hours later, he pumped carbon monoxide into their bedroom and slit their throats.
“I went and knocked on the door and the carbon monoxide detector was going off, said Kristi King. “And at that moment, I knew they were dead…. because they hated noise.”
The couple was in the midst of a bitter divorce and custody battle. King had offered joint custody of the three year olds, but her husband wanted the girls to himself.
In the months leading up to the murders, King said she pleaded with a court-appointed mediator to push for an emergency hearing as her estranged husband’s behavior grew increasingly erratic.
“She said he didn’t qualify because he hadn’t been diagnosed with anything,” King said. “Despite the every ten minute texting, the shoplifting.”
She said she told the mediator that her husband looked at porn, but she said no one would help.
In fact, King said she was told there was no appointment available for a psychiatric evaluation for several months.
King’s case is not unique. In a recent two-year period, the Center for Judicial Excellence tracked news reports that indicated fathers killed their own children in more than 100 cases related to custody and visitation disputes.
“When I show you a text that says, ‘I’m gonna make sure all your children are taken from you,’ you need to listen,” King warned. “My thought was that he would kidnap them. I didn’t think he would kill them.”

Dad gets away with copping "injury to a child" plea--even though 2-month-old daughter was violently killed (Lubbock, Texas)
Why was this guy allowed to plead guilty to "injuring" a child, even though it sounds like this baby was viciously murdered? Sounds like typical abuser daddy coddling to me.
Of course there is no mention of a mother in the home. Was there one?

A father accused of murdering his infant child pleaded guilty to a charge of injury to a child Friday.
Jacob Tanguma, 20, was sentenced to ten years in prison. His four month old daughter died at the hospital in November 2012 after paramedics rushed the infant from the Middleton Place Apartments.
Detectives report Tanguma admitted he was angry with the screaming child, grabbed her throat, and pushed down on her torso before they both eventually fell asleep on a couch.
Police say Tanguma told them he woke up with his hip pressed against the child's face and she was not breathing.

A North Middleton Township man who police said blinded and permanently disabled his 2-month-old daughter after throwing her into a couch last month will appear in court today.
Brendon R. Groves, 25, is scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Paul Fegley at 11 a.m. for a preliminary hearing on charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child by a parent and simple assault, according to Cumberland County court records.
Groves allegedly confessed his role in the assault to police under questioning shortly after the Aug. 4 incident, in which police responded to Groves' home in the 900 block of Gobin Drive to find the infant unresponsive.
According to police, Groves said he threw the infant about 10 feet into the couch after he became irritated when she would not stop crying. The infant struck a platform on the couch, then landed on her head on the floor, police said.
Physicians told police the child was rendered blind in the assault and likely received permanent brain damage that will limit her mobility and ability to care for herself in the future, police said.
