Dad with 12 previous felony convictions still gets joint custody, then leaves 2-year-old son alone in car during freezing temperatures for more than 5 hours (Spokane, Washington)

Well, a father with 12 PREVIOUS FELONY CONVICTIONS still gets awarded joint custody. Then the bozo gets mad at wife #2, leaves the house with his 2-year-old son dressed in nothing but pants, t-shirt, and a diaper, THEN LEAVES HIM ALONE for 5 HOURS in FREEZING TEMPERATURES. By the time the police retrieved him he clearly had symptoms of incipient hypothermia. Still, the clueless wife #2 swears he's a "good father." Not seeing much evidence of that, lady. Meanwhile, the reporter doesn't bother to find out what the mother thinks. Wonder if she is so thrilled that her son almost lost his life with this irresponsible moron.

So much for the fathers rights claims about how daddies don't get custody from the family courts. On the contrary, this father was totally coddled and indulged.

Dad is identified as CHARLES B. FIFE.

Man charged after leaving toddler son in car

Rachel Alexander The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane man is being charged with abandoning a child after leaving his 2-year-old son alone in a car on the South Hill for more than five hours in freezing temperatures.

Police contacted Charles B. Fife, 51, around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after a concerned employee at the Conoco station at 518 East 29th Ave. reported Fife had entered the store and told her he lost his car with his son inside.

Officers located the car with the boy inside around 9:45 p.m. According to court documents, the boy was wearing nothing but pants and a t-shirt. He was shivering, had bright red feet and did not respond to officers. His skin was cold to the touch and his diaper was soaked through.

The temperature outside was 33 degrees, with wind chill of 27 degrees. Witnesses told officers the car had been parked since at least 4:30 p.m.

Officers took the boy inside and gave him a blanket to warm up, but he continued shivering after about 10 minutes. He was taken to the hospital about half an hour after being taken from the car.

Once at the hospital, the boy kept pointing to his feet, saying “ow” and crying when they were touched.

Police spokeswoman Monique Cotton said the child was placed in protective custody with Child Protective Services.

Fife told officers he parked near Manito Park while his son was sleeping, walked around the block to find his friend, and then could not find the car.

According to court documents, he became “very upset and agitated” when asked about the incident.

Judge Michael Price said it was “quite a bizarre” incident after reviewing officer reports at Fife’s initial court appearance today.

“It just makes no sense to me at all,” he said. Fife’s wife, Lisa Fife, was present at court and said Fife took his son out to the park after the two of them were arguing about finances.

“We get along so well I think it got him distraught,” she said, saying it spoke to his character that he chose to leave the situation instead of letting it escalate.

Lisa Fife said she and her husband aren’t very familiar with South Hill, and suspected he may have been so upset from the argument that he forgot where he parked. She said he is a good father to his son and shares custody amicably with the boy’s mother.

“I don’t know what this is going to do to him, not being able to see him,” she said, adding that Fife “lives for” his son.

Prosecutor Ed Hay said Fife has twelve previous felony convictions, including armed robbery and conspiracy to possess a controlled substance.

But Lisa Fife said in spite of his past, her husband has no drug or mental health issues.

Fife remains in jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.

Dad accused of leaving 6-month-daughter outside alone on cold Christmas morning; what happened to the mother of this baby? (Los Angeles, California)

Once again, no mention of a mother in the home or anywhere else. The baby is in the custody of CPS. What happened to Mom? Why did dad JOSE CHAVARRIA appear to have full access, only to abandon the baby outside?

Father Accused Of Leaving Infant Child Outside On Cold Christmas Morning

December 29, 2014 5:46 PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A father accused of leaving his 6-month-old girl outside in the cold early Christmas morning has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment charges.

The Los Angeles City Attorney’s office announced the case against 29-year-old Jose Chavarria on Monday.

Prosecutors said neighbors discovered Chavarria’s infant daughter crying in her stroller outside his Pacoima home at about 2:10 a.m. Christmas Day. The temperature outside was 49 degrees and witnesses said the child was cold to the touch.

Officers said they found Chavarria passed out in the home and that he appeared to be heavily intoxicated. They said he struggled with officers before his arrest.

Chavarria faces up to 2 years in jail if convicted.

The child has been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.

Dad on trial for murder in death of 20-month-old daughter; accused of punching her in the stomach for not eating (Newark, New Jersey)

Another case where the mom had to work--two jobs no less--while the apparently deadbeat dad did "caretaking" that involved punching toddler in the gut for not eating. Moms and babies deserve more than this.

Baby girl, allegedly killed by father, had no pulse, couldn't breathe on her own, doctor says

By Bill Wichert | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com on October 08, 2014 at 3:50 PM, updated October 08, 2014 at 3:51 PM

NEWARK — When Asiyah Hartsfield was brought to University Hospital around 1 a.m. on March 15, 2011, the 20-month-old girl had no pulse, no heart activity and she was not breathing on her own, a doctor said in court today.

“She was not making any effort to breathe at all,” said Dr. Maria Alvarez-Ballway, who treated the child in the hospital’s pediatric emergency department. “She had no vital signs.”

About an hour after EMS workers brought the girl to the hospital, Asiyah Hartsfield was pronounced dead at about 2 a.m., Alvarez-Ballway said.

Alvarez-Ballway described the medical treatment provided to the child during testimony today at the trial of Travis Hartsfield Jr., who is facing murder and child endangerment charges in his daughter’s death.

Hartsfield, 28, of Newark, is accused of killing the girl by punching her in the stomach when she wouldn’t eat. A medical examiner later determined the child died from a severed liver.

Hartsfield has admitted to detectives that he punched the girl twice in the stomach, but his attorney has argued he did not intend to cause her serious injury and should not be convicted of murder. Asiyah Hartsfield, in a photo published with her obituary after her death on March 15, 2011. Asiyah's father, Travis Hartsfield Jr., is charged with her murder.

His first trial ended in a mistrial last year when a jury was unable to reach a verdict.

The girl’s mother, Darshelle Joseph, testified last week that she had turned over the girl to Hartsfield on the morning of March 14, 2011, because she had to go to one of her two jobs.

Around 12:30 a.m. the next morning, Joseph said Hartsfield called her and said that when he went to change her diaper, “Asiyah wasn’t breathing” and that she was “ice cold.” Joseph said she told Hartsfield to call 911.

On the witness stand today, Alvarez-Ballway said that when the girl arrived at the hospital, the medical personnel resumed CPR on the child and continued to give her fluids and medicines.

At the time, Asiyah Hartsfield’s body temperature was 85 degrees, which was “very significantly low” and considered “moderate hypothermia,” Alvarez-Ballway said. “She’s very cold,” the doctor said.

In order for the medicines to work, the medical staff tried to warm up the girl, Alvarez-Ballway said. “Considering she was cold, we wanted to try to warm her up,” she said.

“It could be that she was in the process of dying already,” said Alvarez-Ballway, referring to the girl’s body temperature.

After finding out her daughter was dead, Joseph last week described seeing the girl on a hospital bed, but said she “couldn’t look at her.”

“I just walked out, started crying,” Joseph testified.

Dad gets 16 years for beating 6-week-old daughter, putting her in freezer (Tacoma, Washington)

Man Gets 16 Years for Putting Infant in Freezer

TACOMA, Wash. March 22, 2014
(AP) Associated Press

A 25-year-old Washington man accused of putting his 6-week-old daughter in a 10-degree freezer for about an hour to stop her crying was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison.

Prosecutor Mark Lindquist says Tyler Deutsch pleaded guilty on Jan. 31 to first-degree assault for beating his infant daughter and putting her in the freezer. She has fully recovered, but the prosecutor calls the crime horrible and inexplicable.

Authorities say the child's core temperature fell to 85 degrees in the freezer, after Deutsch put her there and then went to his bedroom and fell asleep. She also had a broken arm and leg and a head injury.

The mother, who had left the baby in his care, saw Deutsch pull her out of the freezer as she was returning home and called 911.

Dad with drug problem gets unsupervised visitation despite mom's objections--then leaves young daughter in hot car and kills her (Sebring, Florida)

Yet ANOTHER example of where child protective services ignored the mother's concerns, and granted Daddy unsupervised visitation. Then the idiot killed the daughter by leaving her in a hot car. Yet another victory for fathers rights, yes?

Dad is identified as CHRISTOPHER KING.

Father gets 20 years in child's death

Jay Meisel | Highlands Today Published: December 16, 2013

SEBRING - A father who left his young daughter to die in a hot car last September was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday.

Christopher King, who had pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, could have received up to 30 years in prison in connection with the death of his daughter, Amelia. That was the time requested by the prosecution.

Heather Wills, Amelia's mother, said she didn't think the 20-year sentence was fair because her daughter didn't get to live 20 years.

But, she added, that at least King won't be out of prison until their son is 18 and can make his own decision about his relationship with his father.

She said she was concerned beforehand that he got unsupervised visitation because she said she knew King was on drugs. Although she asked for help from the Florida Department of Children and Family Services, the agency said it couldn't do anything because no proof existed he was using drugs.

Prosecutors argued that King and another man used drugs the night before and they left Amelia and her brother alone in a car. Prosecutors also said that King initially blamed his son for the daughter being locked in the car. He maintained at that time they were playing.

Assistant State Attorney Richard Castillo said he could accept the sentence and that it was within the sentencing guidelines.

Under those guidelines, the minimum sentence would have been around 14 years, but Shirley Whitsitt, the defense attorney, asked for five years in prison and 10 years probation.

Circuit Judge William Sites, who imposed the sentence, rejected that.

He said that although no evidence exists that King intended for the child to die, he nevertheless committed a "serious, serious" offense.

King testified during the sentencing hearing that he loved his children. He said he was at most guilty of negligence and never fully explained what he was doing while the child was in the car.

"Amelia deserves more than being left in a car," Wills testified during the hearing.

Dad beats mom, dumps her at roadside; takes off with kids with no food, water (Glen Haven, Michigan)

What a freaking jackass. Beats his wife (i.e. the "physical altercation"), throws her out of the car, then takes off with the kids in 90 degree weather with no food or water. Big Daddy Drama as police and Coast Guard resources are utilized to recover this jerk--before the kids got sick or died from hypothermia or dehydration.

Wanted Mich. Father, 3 Famished Children Found Safe At National Park

By JOHN FLESHER
08/27/13 05:25 PM ET EDT

GLEN HAVEN, Mich. — A man who was the target of a 12-hour manhunt at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in northern Michigan remains in custody and an official said he will be formally charged Wednesday.

Daniel Gerard Elliott, 50, will remain in the Emmet County Jail on $10,000 cash bond on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence that was authorized by a county prosecutor in a warrant. Elliott is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday, Sheriff Peter Wallin said.

The magistrate's order included a requirement that Elliott get a mental health evaluation before being released. A district court official said Elliott had not retained an attorney.

The case developed over the weekend when the family from the Detroit suburb of Orchard Lake was visiting friends and relatives in the northern Michigan town of Petoskey, police said.

Wallin said Elliott and his wife had a physical confrontation Sunday and she was left on the side of a road, where she called police. Wallin would not provide further details of the incident, but a blog posting by the sheriff's office in Leelanau County, where the national lakeshore is located, said she was "forced out of the family vehicle by her husband."

Elliott then drove about 90 miles south to the lakeshore with the couple's three children, where they spent the night in the woods without food, water or shelter. Heavy rain fell Monday morning, followed by scorching, muggy weather.

Searchers found the family Monday night walking down a sandy hillside. Authorities said the children were hungry, thirsty, exhausted and covered with mosquito bites but otherwise in good health.

"I feared for the worst," Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich said. "It all turned out well, but something was wrong with this picture."

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter repeatedly swept over the lakeshore, while dozens of officers with several law enforcement agencies combed the shoreline and swampy woodlands.

The children – 14- and 10-year-old girls and a 9-year-old boy – said they knew there was a helicopter looking for them and that they'd been hiding all day, Borkovich said.

Borkovich said the search had been expensive but couldn't provide an estimated cost.

The children told rescuers their father had described the outing as a camping trip, even though they had few supplies or equipment, said Phil Akers, chief ranger at the national lakeshore.

A park ranger spotted a car with a dented door parked near the Coast Guard Maritime Heritage Museum Monday morning. Borkovich said the ranger ran a check on the license plate and learned there was an alert for the vehicle.

Authorities believe Elliott had no criminal intent in taking the children, Borkovich said. He also said that no other charges are expected.

Elliott's wife "said she was concerned for the welfare of her children because of her husband's mental state but did not believe he would harm them," Borkovich said in a blog posting.

Even so, he said Elliott had acted unwisely.

"If you take off in 90-degree heat without plans, without water, without food, you're gone in a rainstorm without ... a tent, I would call that somewhat of a rogue camping event," Borkovich said. "Very risky."

Father being charged after toddler found wandering the streets alone overnight

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - The father of a toddler who was found wandering the streets alone and in his underwear overnight, is in custody.

43-year-old Herbert Tucker was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of marijuana and tampering with physical evidence.

Police say someone called them after seeing the child on Duffy Court, off Camelot Drive, early Friday morning.

First responders arrived and covered the three-year-old with blankets to keep him warm.

When police found the toddler’s father at a nearby home, they say he was outside smoking marijuana.

According to a Lexington police lieutenant, the father told officers he was ‘celebrating.’

Firefighters told police on scene that they thought the toddler's core temperature was in a safe area, despite being exposed to the bitter temperatures.

Dad leaves baby and toddler in hot van as he shops for guns, but not charged (Katy, Texas)

UNNAMED DAD has been coddled by the police and not charged, though the babies were screaming and in obvious distress by the time parametics rescued them. Even the owner of the gun store where Daddy was shopping for almost an hour is totally disgusted, especially given Daddy's indifference to the children's welfare.

Children Left in Hot Van as Father Shopped for Guns

KATY, Texas - A man leaves a baby and toddler in a hot van while he spends an hour shopping for guns at a store in Katy.

It happened on a day when the Houston area saw record-breaking heat. Thankfully, both children are going to be fine, but the owner of Tactical Firearms is fuming over what happened next, and he has it all on camera.

"Look, they are driving off. 'Have a nice day. Go commit another felony somewhere else,'" said Jeremy Alcede, the store's owner.

The driver, believed to be the father of the two children, has not been arrested or charged.

"I said, 'Are you kidding me? You left your kids in the car.' And he said, 'Awww.' That was it. Not, 'Oh my God, are my kids okay?' He just goes, 'Awww," said Alcede.

The state of the art surveillance system at Tactical Firearms captured the man shopping for guns for almost an hour while his five-month-old baby and 18-month-old child are in the back of a blue van.

The father parked the van at 11:53 a.m. and went inside the store.

The temperature was in the mid 70s under clear skies at 12 p.m. Saturday. Alcede says the front window was slightly cracked.

28 minutes pass when the customer parked next to the van hears the babies screaming and calls 911.

"These babies were sweating. You could see it," said Alcede.

"We actually came in the store looking for a parent and could not identify one. No one stepped up and said, 'Yeah, that's my van or those are my children,'" said Nicholas Arrighi, an employee of Tactical Firearms.

The man is still inside shopping as paramedics show up and get the kids out. The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office responded and said the children did not appear to be dehydrated.

"I am a father first and business owner second, and I'll be damned if anybody wastes their money buying my stuff when their kids are being pushed off as second class citizens," said Alcede.

Parked cars get dangerously hot even on cool days. Animation from San Francisco State University shows when the termperature is 80 degrees outside, it's 114 degrees inside a car after just 30 minutes. Texas law says parents cannot leave a child under age 7 alone in a car for more than five minutes.

"It's a slam dunk case. You just told me the law, I just showed you the footage. Everybody was aware, and they drove off," said Alcede.

Precinct 5 deputy constables say the Harris County District Attorney's Office declined to accept charges, referring the case to Child Protective Services.

"The (deputy) constable himself, the conversation we had, he wanted them to go to jail, but he said my hands are tied," said Alcede.

The children's mother showed up almost two hours later. The family was free to go. Watching the whole ordeal on video brings Alcede to tears. He hopes to never see the man in his store again, but he won't soon forget the look on two children's faces.

FOX 26 News was unable to reach the district attorney's office for comment. CPS is trying to determine whether anyone contacted them about the case.

Drunk dad with joint custody pushes 4-year-old son in stroller to liquor store with unzipped jacket, no gloves, no hat on coldest day of year (Stillwater, Minnesota)

Still an UNNAMED DAD. So why does this sorry sack have joint custody of a young child? He appears to be an alcoholic who is incapable of basic common sense or judgement when it comes to rearing a child. Plus, he's a thief (stealing ketchup?). We're lucky a good samaritan saw this situation and reported it before the little boy developed hypothermia. Wonder if Mom will get sole custody now....don't hold your breath.

Stillwater Police: Father Pushes Child in Stroller to Liquor Store with Unzipped Jacket, No Gloves, No Hat on Coldest Day of the Year

A 31-year-old Stillwater man may face child endangerment charges after he pushed his 4-year-old son's stroller to the liquor store Thursday without a hat or gloves in temperatures hovering around zero degrees.

By Shawn Hogendorf
January 20, 2012

A 31-year-old Stillwater man allegedly registered a .26 blood alcohol content while pushing his 4-year-old child down Third Street in a stroller with an unzipped coat, no hat or mittens on the coldest day of the year so far.

It was 1 degree outside at about 6:18 p.m. Thursday when police were called to a report of a welfare concern involving a seemingly intoxicated man pushing his child’s stroller through downtown Stillwater.

A witness called police to say that he saw the man walking from the liquor store while pushing a stroller—stopping every 10 feet while traveling about 50 yards in 10 minutes.

The witness told police the man almost fell off the curb with the stroller a couple of times and at one point was nearly hit by a car while trying to cross Olive at Third Street.

At that point the witness lost sight of the man, and called police.

When police arrived, the officer made contact with the man near the Historic Courthouse.

The man told the officer he had just come from the library and was on his way home, the report states. The officer smelled an odor of alcohol on the man—and a preliminary breath test done on the scene revealed a .26 blood alcohol level.

While conducting a pat search, police found two bottles of ketchup in the man’s jacket—and a third in the stroller. The man told police he had ran out of ketchup at home, so he stole them from the Dairy Queen in downtown Stillwater.

When asked where he had been drinking, the man said he was “sipping” out of 750-milliliter bottle of Karkov vodka while he was downtown.

Police then transported the boy and his father to the Stillwater Police Department until the officers could make arrangements to have the child picked up by a family member and the father taken to Detox.

The boy’s mother, who lives in Maplewood, was eventually contacted and she picked her child up at about 9 p.m.

While the child was in the stroller without a hat and gloves, the police report notes that the man had on two winter hats, gloves and a jacket.

The child was not in any distress, the report states. There were no obvious signs of frostbite or redness to his fingers or his face. The child had a hat with him, the report states, but was not wearing it.

While in custody, the child’s father was allegedly crying and apologizing to his son, of whom he has part-time custody.

The man was cited with theft of ketchup from Dairy Queen and having an open container of alcohol in public.

KSTP published the man's name in this report. Although his named appeared on police records, it is Stillwater Patch's policy not to name a suspect until they have been officially charged with a felony crime by the Washington County Attorney's Office.

The case was forwarded to Washington County social services and the county attorney’s office for review of possible child endangerment charges.

Dad found guilty of child endangerment for subjecting children to below-freezing temperatures (Woodstock, Virginia)

Dad JASON LEE MULLINS was apparently drunk when he got into a fight and stormed off with his two kids in below-freezing temperatures. The kids were found with hypothermia. The fight was with his in-laws. Where mom was in all this is curiously erased. Single dad or what?

Father is guilty in ordeal of children
By Preston Knight -- pknight@nvdaily.com

WOODSTOCK -- A town man has pleaded guilty in Shenandoah County Circuit Court to subjecting his young children to below-freezing temperatures following an argument with his in-laws.

Jason Lee Mullins, 32, 710 S. Water St., entered a plea agreement on two charges of child endangerment Wednesday. Sentencing will be left to the court on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m., and the commonwealth, as part of the deal to have him plead guilty, will not argue during that hearing.

According to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Ken Alger, the Woodstock Police Department responded to the residence on Jan. 13 for a report that Mullins had left on foot with his children -- ages 9 and 10 -- after the argument. Alcohol was involved, he said, and the in-laws, who Mullins and his family lived with, were concerned that the children were not properly dressed.

"It was a very cold night," Alger said.

A criminal complaint states that it felt like 11 degrees outside.

Local police combed the area and a search and rescue team from Northern Virginia also was contacted to assist. Officers called Mullins' cell phone to determine where the group was, and he and his children were found in a wooded area near Lora Drive after about two hours. The children, whose shoes and pants were wet because they had walked through mud puddles, had hypothermia and were treated at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Alger said.

He said one of the children told the Department of Social Services that Mullins had indicated that the group was hiding from police.

The complaint states that Mullins was apprehended after running 15-20 feet away from an officer.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An Albuquerque father is behind bars accused of leaving his young daughter inside his hot car while he lounged around at a public swimming pool.

Robert Tafoya, 30, was in court Sunday to face child abandonment charges.

According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, Tafoya left his daughter, described as a "special needs" child, inside his hot car to punish her for acting up.

The incident took place Saturday at the Los Padillas Aquatic Center in the south valley.

Sheriff's deputies said when they found the little girl she was crying, sweating, and shaking.

Parents at the swimming pool said there is no excuse for the father's actions.

“This is just a terrible thing. I mean, kids come first you know that's not discipline,” Leroy Gutierrez said. “That is child abuse, somebody like that should be locked up."

Tafoya is in jail on a no-bond hold for a probation violation.

Dad leaves two kids in hot car while he visits casino (Fort Gibson, Oklahoma)

Dad BRADLEY MATTOCK is the latest father arrested for this foolishness. And he want us to feel sorry for him because he's a school teacher? Then he should have known better! I do feel sorry for rushed parents who honestly forgot the baby was in the car on their way to work. I don't feel sorry for idiots who deliberately put their kids at risk when they should know better. Especially when they're going to casinos, bars, whorehouses, etc.

Why were the kids released to the grandmother? Don't they have a mother? Well, do they?

Father Arrested For Leaving Children In Hot Car Outside Fort Gibson Casino

Updated: Jun 24, 2011 8:17 AM CDT

FORT GIBSON, Oklahoma – A man was arrested outside a Fort Gibson casino Wednesday after police said he left his two young sons in the car while he went inside to gamble.

Fort Gibson police were called to Cherokee Casino Wednesday evening about 7 p.m.

Police said a person inside told casino security there were two kids inside a car in the parking lot.

Security made contact with a nine-year-old boy and six-year-old boy inside the car, who said their father, Bradley Matlock, was inside the casino.

Matlock, 45, told police he went inside to gamble for a couple of minutes and didn't realize he had been gone for a longer period of time.

He told officers he was a school teacher at Inola and that his arrest would hurt his reputation as a teacher.

Matlock was arrested for child endangerment and booked into the Muskogee County jail.

The children were released to their grandmother.

Dad indicted for leaving 5-year-old daughter in car while he played video games (London, Kentucky)

Actually, I truly sympathize for rushed parents who forget to drop the baby off at childcare before rushing off to work. Parents like RYAN MATTHEW SEGRAVES, who has been indicted on leaving his 5-year-old daughter in the car while he played video games? Hmm, not so much. And why was this guy playing video games on a Wednesday afternoon? Does he have a job? Or is he another useless "stay-at-home"?

A grand jury has indicted the Laurel County father who deputies say left his five-year-old daughter in a car while he went to play video games earlier this month.

Ryan Matthew Segraves, 25, of London is charged with first-degree criminal abuse and first-degree wanton endangerment. Police say they received a complaint of the girl being left unattended for approximately 30 minutes inside a a 2005 Grand Am on June 1. The temperature at the time was 87 degrees, and police say the temperature inside the car was about 100 degrees.

Police say they arrive at about 2 p.m. to find the girl was still sitting in the vehicle while her father was inside the game room.

Dad charged with killing mom, 1-year-old daughter to avoid child support (Washington, DC)

It appears that dad RICHMOND PHILLIPS was a married man who didn't want to pay child support to his girlfriend. So he "allegedly" shot the mother to death, and left the baby in a hot car to die from hypothermia. We need better social and economic assistance for unmarried mothers. Relying on child support from dangerous ex-boyfriends just puts women and children at risk.

D.C. police officer charged with woman’s murder after she and baby are found dead
By Matt Zapotosky and Paul Duggan, Published: June 3

Richmond Phillips, a married D.C. police officer, met in a Prince George’s County park on Monday with Wynetta Wright to talk about her year-old daughter.

Phillips was due in court the next day for a hearing that would begin to determine whether he was the baby girl’s father and, if so, how much he’d have to pay to support her.

The meeting ended horribly, police said. Phillips, 39, allegedly pulled out a gun and killed the 20-year-old Wright with a bullet to the head. He then left her body in the park, drove her car up a hill away from the scene and abandoned the baby in the car, according to law enforcement officials with direct knowledge of the case.

When an officer found the car Thursday, after the scorching midweek heat, the baby was dead. As police awaited autopsy results Friday, they said she might have died from the extreme heat in the car. Her body showed no clear signs of trauma. The car has tinted windows, one official said, so passersby were unlikely to notice the baby inside.

“Just a tragic, tragic incident,” said Prince George’s Deputy Police Chief Gary Cunningham.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier called it “a horrific crime.”

Phillips, a vice officer who joined the D.C. police force in 2003, was arrested by Prince George’s police Friday and charged with first-degree murder. A family member said Phillips, who is being held without bond, lived in the county’s Temple Hills area with his wife of 13 years and their 12-year-old daughter.

Wright, an aspiring Prince George’s sheriff’s deputy, also lived in Temple Hills. She filed a court petition in February seeking to have Phillips declared the father of her daughter, Jaylin Wright, who was born June 6, 2010. She also asked the court to order Phillips to make child support payments and provide health insurance for Jaylin.

Wright was found dead Thursday on the ground in Oxon Run Spring Valley Park, about a mile from Phillips’s home, authorities said. They said Jaylin was found elsewhere in the park, dead in a car seat in Wright’s green 2008 Saturn Vue.

Phillips has been charged in Wright’s slaying, but authorities are awaiting the autopsy results on Jaylin before deciding whether to charge him in her death.

Two county police officials familiar with the case, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing, said Wright told a friend that she planned to meet with Phillips on Monday to discuss what would happen Tuesday at a scheduled court hearing in the paternity matter.

Detectives have obtained surveillance video showing Phillips and Wright arriving a few minutes apart Monday in a parking lot of the Hillcrest Heights Community Center, at the edge of Oxon Run Spring Valley Park, the officials said.

After Wright failed to return from the meeting, her mother alerted authorities that she was missing, police said. On Tuesday, Phillips showed up for the paternity hearing in Prince George’s Family Court and agreed to take a DNA test, said Paula Tolson, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

Dad charged with leaving 7-month-old son in pick up truck while gambling at the racetrack (Rochester, New York)

Once again, we have a story where some obvious back story has been omitted. If dad CLINT VANEPPS was married or in a committed relationship, then why not just leave the baby at home with Mom if you're going to the race track? Or was Daddy "caretaking" because Mom had to work? (And don't get me started on the mothers of young infants who are forced to work while daddies play.) Or was this a custody/visitation issue? Did Daddy's visitation time just HAPPEN to coincide with a time when he got that gamblin' itch? Or --god forbid--did he actually have custody of this baby? Questions, questions...and no answers.

Rochester father charged with endangering the welfare of seven-month-old baby

A father is accused of leaving his infant son outside in a cold pick up truck while he gambled inside at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack Monday.

Police have charged 25-year-old Clint Vanepps of Greece with endangering the welfare of a child. According to Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero, Vanepps claims he was only going to be gambling for a short time and didn’t think any harm would come to his son.

It was around 2:45 Monday afternoon when a woman walking through the parking lot of the Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack heard a noise coming from a pick up truck.

Sheriff Povero, said, “We're very grateful that she took the time to check out this noise. Because she sees in the truck what appears to be an infant covered in a very thin blanket and the vehicle was locked up with nobody around.”

Ten minutes later the baby was rescued by security guards. They used a jimmy to unlock the truck and then took the baby inside where an EMT warmed him up and changed his diaper. All this while, they paged and tried to find the dad inside.

Sheriff's Deputies estimate the infant had been in the truck for 47 minutes in 15 degree temperatures. The good news is that he is okay.

Sheriff Povero says he wishes this was an isolated incident. “Unfortunately we do see different type of child abuse cases in different forms. If you think back it was just a few months ago that we were talking to the news media about people who left young children in cars that were overheated.”

Homicide charges likely again dad in death of 1-month-old son (Normandy, Tennessee)

Dad ANDREW KEITH JOHNSTON may be charged with homicide in the death of his 1-month-old son. Appears that the baby suffered general abuse in addition to abusive head trauma, which left the infant lethargic. In a panic, Daddy then put the kid in cold water to revive him, which caused hypothermia, especially in a newborn. But of course, cold water does nothing to help when you have a hemorrhage in the brain. The baby died after being removed from life support.

Homicide charges likely against Normandy father

NORMANDY, Tenn. – Homicide charges are likely to be filed against a Normandy man charged with abusing his one-month-old son, who later died from his injuries.

An autopsy from the state medical examiner office determined the cause of death of the infant to be homicide, according to a report in the Shelbyville Times Gazette, and the aggravated child abuse charge against the child's father, 18-year-old Andrew Keith Johnston, would likely be amended.

Johnston's son died last October 22 after doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville removed him from life support a night earlier.

Authorities became aware of the alleged abuse on the night of October 15, after a call went out about an unresponsive baby on Normandy Road.

The baby was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and his condition seemed to be improving.

According to a report filed with the Tullahoma Police Department, the child was normal and responsive until a few days later, when his mother noticed that the infant's left eye was extremely dilated, and it was discovered that the child had hemorrhaging in the brain.

The child was taken to Vanderbilt where doctors reported the boy also had broken ribs and fingerprint marks on one of his legs.

The boy's father told hospital personnel that he put the baby in cold water in the shower for a few minutes in an attempt to wake him.

A preliminary hearing has been set for February 24 during which a judge will determine whether there is enough evidence to bind Johnston over to the Bedford County grand jury.

Dad beats mom, locks kids outside in 9 degree weather when they try to escape (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Dad JULIO VALENCIA is accused of getting drunk, getting "violent" with the mother of his children (of course, his "alleged" actions remain unspecified and basically glossed over), and locking his two kids outside in 9 degree weather when they tried to escape him.

The police even had to taser this dude--that's how "combative" he was even with THEM.

But just watch. I have little doubt that the judges will turn him loose in no time, so he can terrorize his "womenfolk" all over again. And if Mom tried to leave this guy, it would be even worse for all of them. Unattainable/unenforceable protection orders along with joint custody has made self-protection impossible these days.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An Albuquerque father is in jail, accused of locking his two children out of their home when it was only 9 degrees outside.

According to the two daughters -- ages 17 and 12 -- their father, Julio Valencia, came home drunk Saturday, got violent with their mother and then locked them out when they ran outside to get away from him. The girls were both barefoot and had no jackets on.

Police said when they arrived, Valencia was so combative, they had to shoot him with a Taser to subdue him.

Valencia, 56, is charged with two counts of child abuse.

Dad watches TV while toddler wanders around outside in wet diaper in 4 degree weather (Duluth, Minnesota)

Traditionally, moms have been blamed for basic neglect like this. Partly because mothers have always represented the vast majority of caregivers, so naturally they would represent the majority of neglect cases. But now that daddies are being recruited to do childcare, we're seeing a lot more cases like this one. But UNNAMED DAD is apparently getting off with nothing but a warning after he let his 21-month-old child run around outside in nothing but a wet diaper when it was 4 degree outside. So was dad "babysitting" while Mom worked? Was this during child visitation? Is this a single dad with custody? Who knows, because there is no mention of a mother at all.

INVISIBLE MOTHER ALERT.

Toddler in diaper found on Superior street
A passing motorist came to the aid of a 21-month-old child who was found running down Tower Avenue on Wednesday afternoon in nothing but a wet diaper.
By: Superior Telegram, Associated Press

A passing motorist came to the aid of a 21-month-old child who was found running down Tower Avenue on Wednesday afternoon in nothing but a wet diaper.

The temperature was about 4 degrees at the time, according to a Superior Police Department report.

Julie Nelson of Superior was driving southbound along Tower Avenue when she saw the child running down the street right in front of her, according to the report. She stopped and honked her horn to get the boy to stop. Then she parked in the Kenny Wong’s parking lot and wrapped the boy up in her jacket as she waited for officers to arrive.

About the same time, officers received a call from a neighbor who said the boy probably lived at a residence on the 1800 block of Banks Avenue. When Officer Todd Carlson knocked on the door of that residence, the boy’s father said he was watching a movie and the boy must have snuck out.

Carlson checked the child and found no signs of frostbite. He warned the father of the danger the child faced outside from frostbite and passing vehicles.

Dad who made young children walk in sub-zero temperatures enters no contest plea (Mount Clemens, Michigan)

We've posted on dad ARMANDO KOSTA before.

Appears to be another case of a deadbeat (and alcoholic) father playing at stay-at-home dad while Mom worked.

Mich. man who made kids walk in cold enters plea

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — A father has pleaded no contest to a child abuse charge that he made his two young children walk a half-mile in below-zero temperatures after crashing his car in a Macomb County ditch.

The Macomb Daily reports Monday that 37-year-old Armando Kosta of Sterling Heights will be sentenced Dec. 15.

Records show Kosta's no contest plea last Thursday was accepted. The newspaper says a drunken driving charge was dropped.

Police say Kosta wrecked his car Jan. 2 in Harrison Township, then walked with his 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son to an apartment building where he looked for help. The children had no hats or gloves, and the boy was missing a shoe.

Defense attorney George Serkian declined Monday to comment on Kosta's plea.
