A 27-year-old father allegedly killed his young daughter then himself after an altercation with his partner.
A 27-year-old father allegedly killed his young daughter and himself after an altercation with his partner over the weekend.
Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said Dashen Vandiar and the child's mother, Alisha, had an argument while at a relative's residence in Woodhurst, Durban, on Saturday night.
Zwane said after the fight, Vandiar allegedly hanged his four-year-old daughter Kellita in an outbuilding, before hanging himself in the same area.
It was unclear if Vandiar lived in the outbuilding or if he had been visiting the relatives at the time of the incident.
Zwane said a case of murder was being investigated at the Chatsworth police station.
Meanwhile, a family member who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the incident, said a funeral would be arranged for Tuesday.
Messages of condolences were found on Facebook, where family members posted pictures of Kellita.
The child’s mother is believed to be a nurse at a local hospital. - IOL

Violent dad gets custody--despite minister's vow (Australia)
With perhaps the exception of the Middle Eastern countries, Australia is arguably the most "father friendly" country you'll find anywhere. And it's become increasingly clear that as "fathers rights" has been institutionalized as sacrosanct, the safety of mothers and children has been totally sacrificed. Notice that UNNAMED DAD has had little problem getting custody despite extensive documentation regarding his violent criminal behavior. Also notice that the mother of this child "allegedly" committed suicide, and that the context for this so-called suicide is completely ignored.
And given that this guy has "severely beaten" several pregnant women, why is he not in prison for assault? Disgusting.

Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney allowed her department to return full-time care of a child to his violent father in circumstances she'd described in opposition as "horrifying".
Ms McSweeney conceded yesterday the placement of the boy was "not an ideal situation but this is real life".
However, she denied warning a fellow MP not to ask questions in Parliament about the man in 2007.
Former Liberal MLC Anthony Fels claims that Ms McSweeney advised him "not to get involved" and promised that when she won government, she would "take action".
Mr Fels says that two months after taking office, Ms McSweeney ignored a 42-page dossier he delivered to her office and allowed her department to hand over the boy to his father.
The department had a court order over the child until July last year and could have applied for an extension of the order.
The father's violence is well documented. Seven different women have obtained restraining orders against him and hospitals have records of at least three occasions when he severely beat partners while they were pregnant.
In 2003 and 2007, Department for Community Development officers recommended 18-year wardship orders be placed over the boy, now eight, because of his father's "significant history of chronic violence and drug misuse such that the physical, emotional and other welfare of the children is likely to be in jeopardy".
The boy's mother hanged herself in October 2003. In 2004, the father's family hired lawyers to challenge a five-year wardship order and, in a deal with the department, the family won full-time care.
In 2005, then in opposition, Ms McSweeney was quoted in a newspaper article titled "Boy given to violent father", accusing the DCD of placing the child in danger.
"I find it absolutely horrifying that children are being placed with relatives who are known criminals," she was quoted saying.
Yesterday, Ms McSweeney said: "Perhaps if I had been minister in 2005 this child may have been placed in a stable foster home but I was not the minister.
"In 2008 this child was six years old and his father had completed all the relevant court appointed sessions and I had no grounds to stop the process. I have made it a priority with the director-general that as soon as any legitimate complaint is made with regard to this child, it is checked by the department."

Cold-blooded dad gets double life sentence for murders of 4-year-old daughter, 7-year-old son (King William's Town, South Africa)

CONVICTED King William’s Town child murderer Peter Shaw, 37, received a double life sentence yesterday for hanging his two young children from a doorway in their home in what Judge Jeremy Pickering called “a callous, cold- blooded and despicable” deed.
“The accused used his children as pawns to be sacrificed in his battle with his wife,” Pickering said during sentencing in the Grahamstown High Court yesterday.
On Good Friday last year Shaw – who is now divorced and whose marriage was falling apart at the time – took his daughter Robyn, 4, and son Shannon, 7, from their beds and hanged them by a rope in the doorways of their adjacent bedrooms. The horrific murders happened in the Shaw family home in Breidbach, King William’s Town.
Shaw tried to commit suicide afterwards, but failed. And, while he admitted that only he could have killed the children, he claimed he did not remember the murders.
Medical testimony during the trial suggested the children had not been sedated prior to their deaths.
Pickering said yesterday Shaw had hanged his two children to punish his wife, Tania, for resisting his control. “It is difficult to imagine a more callous, cold-blooded and despicable deed,” Pickering said.
“He now says it should be remembered that he, too, was suffering the loss of his children and that people did not realise how hard this was for him. That he was the cause of the deaths of two innocent children appears to have escaped him entirely in his hypocritical attempts to portray himself as one of the victims.
“His evidence in this regard is once again a striking illustration of his utter self-absorption.”
Pickering also said that by his conduct Shaw had devastated the lives of the rest of the family.
He referred to testimony in mitigation on behalf of Shaw, which suggested that the children would at least have died a relatively quick and painless death. According to the medical evidence they would have suffered only a short period of convulsions before the cut-off of oxygen to their brains caused them to become comatose.
“This submission overlooks and ignores the bewildered terror they must have experienced when ... their supposedly loving father and protector proceeded to hang them. It is not difficult to imagine the even greater terror which must have been experienced by the child who was the second to be hanged upon seeing the body of his or her sibling, and upon realising what fate lay ahead.”
Pickering said only one sentence would be appropriate on each of the two counts of murder “and that is a sentence of life imprisonment”.
Correctional Services has yet to decide where Shaw will serve his sentence.
