A father who kidnapped his own baby girl from Britain after his marriage broke down has been jailed for his “unspeakable cruelty."
Maher Belaid, 34, abducted their three-month-old daughter to Libya while his wife was on a shopping trip - and she has not seen her for more than two years.
The judge had told Belaid to return little Talia, now 27 months, to Britain to be with her mother. But the court heard he has refused to co-operate with the British Embassy.
Restaurant worker Belaid was jailed for six-and-a-half years as the judge apologised to the child’s sobbing mother for not being able to jail him for longer.
Belaid fled to his North African home with Talia in November two years ago after his marriage in Britain broke down.
And he has refused to return Talia, now 27 months old, who is being looked after by Belaid’s mother in the Libyan capital of Tripoli.
The marriage - which allowed immigrant Belaid to stay in Britain - broke down after the birth of Talia.
But the judge heard there was “no prospect” of her being returned to her mother Malgorzata, 30, in Barry, South Wales.
Restaurant worker Belaid was arrested after returning to Britain without his daughter.
The court heard that Belaid copied his uncle Mohammed who had stayed in Libya with his young daughter and not allowed her to return to Britain five years ago.
Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe said Belaid whisked his daughter to Heathrow airport for a flight to Libya while his wife was shopping in the centre of Cardiff.
Mr Cobbe said: “He phoned her in the evening and told her he was in Tunisia and that Talia was safe.
“He said he had done nothing wrong, he was teaching her a lesson, and he could take Talia when he wanted and it was no problem for him.”
Newport Crown Court heard that Talia’s mother would see her for just a few minutes at a time on internet phone service Skype.
The hearing was told that she was tormented by the little girl calling Belaid’s mother “mum”.
Mr Cobbe said: “The defendant’s cruelty has deprived the mother of her child and has deprived his child of the love she could have received from her mother.
“The emotional hardship she has endured is plain to see and is heartbreaking.”
Belaid’s lawyer Richard Ace said that efforts to bring the toddler back to Britain had “hit a brick wall”.
Belaid, of Roath, Cardiff, who admitted abduction, was jailed for six and a half years.
Judge Patrick Harrington QC said he was restricted by sentencing powers otherwise he would have given Belaid a “far far longer” term behind bars for his “unspeakable cruelty”.
Belaid - who met his future wife while both worked at a pizza takeaway - was told by the judge: “This is a harrowing case.
“You put into effect a cruel deception and the torment you have inflicted on a very nice girl is simply beyond measure.
“Rarely have I seen a case of such unspeakable cruelty.”

Dad who prayed his children would die as martyrs turned down for "access" to kids after divorce (New South Wales, Australia)
Fathers Rights have been institutionalized in Australia for a while. The result has been that any demented, violent father pretty much received "access" on demand, as joint custody became more or less mandatory. The result of that has been lots of murdered kids, such as Darcy Freeman, Yadmira Acar, Kyla Rogers, the three Farquaharson boys...All of them murdered because Daddy had access.
Thank goodness, the Australians are showing some common sense. Five years ago, I swear they would have given caved into this Islamic jihadist nutcase dad's demands for full access. And then they would have been wringing their hands proclaiming what a "tragedy" it was when the same nutcase UNNAMED DAD murdered his kids in some sort of martyrdom scheme.

AN extremist dad living in suburban Australia prayed his children would die as martyrs before puberty so he could enter heaven honourably, a court has been told.
The man sat his daughter, who was not yet three, on his knee to watch videos of executions and suicide bombings, slapping her if she became distressed, his former wife testified.
She said he also had the little girl sing a Jihadi song accompanying the videos.
A federal magistrate accepted the man taught the little girl to "chant enthusiastically and joyously over the death and mutilation of other human beings".
It was alleged the man also punched, slapped or kicked his wife if she did not watch the videos.
A Federal Magistrates' Court judgment, published this week, has revealed the man sought access to his two children, now aged 6 and 3.
But the dad, who has been convicted of assaulting his former wife, has been denied time with the children.
His identity is protected by the Family Law Act, but he continues to live in Australia.
The man was born in Libya and is of Palestinian origin. He and his ex-wife were devout Muslims.
But a federal magistrate said the case was not at all about the man's religious beliefs, rather his broader belief system.
His former wife told the court that while she was pregnant and after their birth of their two children he made duas, or prayers of supplication.
He pronounced the duas, seeking that he and his wife be rewarded with great honour by the children dying before puberty and and going forward in the cause of Islam.
Federal magistrate Joe Harman accepted the father, known by the pseudonym Mr Heiden, pronounced the dua.
"I struggle to understand how a parent could possibly derive any joy from the thought of a child's death, let alone enter into a prayer or plea to have a child taken from them when so many of parents in so many societies, including the present-day Palestine, experience that pain," Mr Harman said.
When asked if he could have pronounced the duas seeking that one of his children die before puberty, the man said: "I'm not sure. I could have. I do that (make duas) a lot."
But when asked if he did make such a dua, he said: "It's possible. I don't think I did. I really can't remember, but I don't see why it's important."
He said later he didn't want to hurt his children or for them to be suicide bombers.
The couple separated in 2008 after the man allegedly slapped, kicked, punched and raped his wife, she told the court.
Mr Heiden denied any violence against his ex-wife.
The court heard the man had several involuntary admissions to hospital for psychiatric issues. The hearing was in New South Wales.

Mums reunited with stolen children--but they have no chance in getting custody (United Kingdom)
Most of the time, the media and international diplomats focus on cases involving fathers like MARK GOLDMAN or CHRISTOPHER SAVOIE, who claim their children were "kidnapped" by their mothers. Both managed to get major media financial and governmental support. Goldman even got a U.S TV network to fly him to Brazil to "save" his son. Both have managed to get the U.S. State Department and US Congressman to actively help them.

Sky News has been given unprecedented access to travel to Libya with a group of mothers being reunited with their children after their fathers took them abroad.
In most cases the children were abducted. But in all cases the mothers have virtually no chance of getting them back.
The trip was organised by the UK charity Children and Families Across Borders.
The idea was for the mothers to get two weeks' organised access to their children at a holiday camp in the Libyan capitol Tripoli.
The project has the backing of Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi.
We set off for Tripoli with a group of mothers and grandparents from across the UK and Europe.
Anita Lewis from Norwich was married to a Libyan who snatched her five children 10 years ago.
She told us how her life changed forever when her ex-husband came to pick up their children one day and never brought them back.
'He hired a couple - a husband and wife - with a passport with 10 children on it which was used to smuggle my children out as their children,' she said.
'It was all very well organised. When the news comes that they are in Libya I guess you're supposed to be relieved that at least they are alive.
'But for me it was my worst fear realised - knowing I wouldn't be able to get them back.'
Anita travelled to Libya with her two youngest children from another relationship.
On the steps of the holiday village, she was reunited with her two oldest boys Hamza, 15, and Ali, 17.
Waiting inside were her daughters Rumaysa, 21, Safiya, 19, and Aisha, 12.
They were forbidden by their father from being greeted by their mother in front of our cameras.
Their father, Azzedin Elgirnazi, stood in reception watching everything.
He had also checked into the holiday village to keep watch over his ex-wife for her entire two-week stay.
Azzedin is still wanted by Interpol for five counts of child abduction.
In the past year, there has been a 39% increase in the number of British children abducted and taken to countries not signed up to the Hague Convention - an international protocol to help parents get their children back.
Few countries outside Europe observe the convention.
Marek Ganther from Children and Families Across Borders said: 'In Libya and most of the Arabic world it's virtually impossible to get your child back.
'There just aren't the legal mechanisms as there are with countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention on the international aspects of child abduction which does provide a speedy mechanism for the return and the resolution of these problems.
'I think we need the world to recognise that these days there are many more trans-cultural marriages and relationships and there is much more movement across borders and so these problems are only likely to increase.
'I think that some of the fathers feel that they can do whatever they want here.'
Contrast that with these UK mothers, where the governmental authorities take a very ho-hum attitude about their plight. We hear nothing but endless complaints about countries like Japan for favoring moms. We hear nothing at all about al the countries like Libya or others where fathers are catered to. Where's the State Department outrage about that?
