A star Brazilian goalkeeper jailed for 22 years for ordering the kidnap and murder of his girlfriend, who was dismembered and fed to his pet dogs, has been released to play football.
Bruno Fernandes de Souza, 28, confessed to the horrific crimes last March after his ex-girlfriend Eliza Samudio was murdered.
But despite his confession and prison sentence, the goalkeeper was allowed to sign a five-year contract with Montes Claros of the Campeonato Mineiro, upi.com reported.
It means Bruno will be allowed to leave prison on day release, accompanied by a police escort, to train with the team and play in matches.
The former Flamengo captain is said to have wanted his ex-partner dead so he could avoid paying child support after she gave birth to his love child.
Her dead body was allegedly fed to Bruno's pet rottweilers.
Bruno, who was tipped to play for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, was sentenced to 22 years and three months for the murder.
He has been behind bars since 2010 and is now able to take advantage of a provision in Brazilian law that allows a prisoner more freedom after three or four years, so long as they have shown good behaviour.
Montes Claros club president, Ville Mocellin, confirmed the controversial decision.
'We want to give an opportunity to the man Bruno,' he told OTempo.
'For him, it is a chance to return to play. To the club, he is an athlete who can strengthen the team and a way to invest in the social side.'
Judge Marixa Fabiane Rodrigues said the goalkeeper, who played for Brazil's biggest team Flamengo, had 'meticulously calculated' Ms Samudio's execution.
He told the court in Contagem, south-east Brazil, that the footballer was 'twisted' and had 'instilled in his personality a total misunderstanding of values.'
He added: 'Bruno believed that, by making the body disappear, he could ensure total impunity.'
The former player had previously denied any knowledge of what happened to the 25-year-old, but told a court last March how his best friend Luiz Henrique Romao had paid someone to kill her.
He admitted that although he hadn't ordered his former lover to be killed, he had 'accepted' it.
The goalkeeper is accused of planning Ms Samudio's abduction and murder with eight others including his wife Dayane, another former lover, a cousin and former policeman Marcos Santos.
It has been alleged that he watched as Santos tortured her and then helped him to chop her body.
Parts of the woman's corpse are alleged to have been fed to Bruno's pet rottweillers, while the rest was buried in concrete.
At an earlier trial, Romao was found guilty of Ms Samudio's murder and jailed for 15 years. Santos will be put on trial next month.
Fernandes, who before his arrest had been linked with a multi-million pound transfer to AC Milan, has always claimed Ms Samudio was alive and had left the country. Her body has never been found.
But he told the court in Contagem that his cousin, Jorge Rosa, who had witnessed the murder, had told him what had happened.
He claimed that after kidnapping Ms Samudio, Romao had taken her to a house in Belo Horizonte where hired killer Santos was waiting.
He said: 'There he held her hands and asked [Romao] to tie them in front of her, and put a tie around her neck.
'And [Romao] even kicked Eliza's legs away. That's what Jorge told me. And that they had chopped up her body, that they had thrown her body for the dogs to eat.'
The former star admitted that he feels 'guilty' for her death despite insisting that he never ordered the killing.
Ms Samudio, who had previously claimed to have had an affair with Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo, met Bruno at a footballers' party in May 2009 and fell pregnant by accident, it is claimed.
The goalkeeper demanded she have an abortion but she went ahead with the pregnancy, instead insisting that he assume paternity of the child.
Before her disappearance on June 4, 2010, Ms Samudio had approached police claiming she had been held captive by Bruno and his associates, who forced her to take an illegal abortion drug.
Bruno allegedly put a gun to her head and told her: 'You don't know who I am or what I'm capable of - I'm from the favela.'
The baby, Bruninho, was born in February 2010, but the player refused to acknowledge he was the father.
Prosecutors allege that Bruno ordered Ms Samudio's murder after she told him she would take legal action to force him to pay child support.
In a statement to police, the footballer's teenage cousin Jorge Rosa claimed he and Romao picked up Ms Samudio and her son from a Rio de Janeiro hotel after she accepted an invitation by the footballer to talk about the paternity claims.
He said they drove her 220 miles to a property in Belo Horizonte which Bruno and his wife used as a weekend retreat, where she was held captive for six days.
Ms Samudio was then allegedly handed over to former military policeman Santos, who committed 'barbaric tortures' on her before strangling her to death with a neck tie in front of her four-month-old son.
Santos, who was allegedly paid £8,000 to murder her, played loud music on a stereo to drown out the woman's screams, it is claimed.
Edson Moreira, a detective who investigated the case, said: 'His acts were almost impossible to describe without breaking down - images from the worst nightmare you could imagine.'
Police later found Ms Samudio's four-month-old baby in a Belo Horizonte slum, alleged to have been abandoned there by Bruno's wife Dayane. DNA tests later proved the footballer's paternity. The child is now being looked after by Ms Samudio's mother.

This is a theme seen fairly frequently with abducting fathers. They aren't interested in raising the children. They just want to punish the mother. So the kid is either abused /killed (see dad ERIC LORENZO DAVIS in a couple of posts below this one) or the child is abandoned (see any recent articles on Baby Hope, who was abducted by her father over 20 years ago and dumped with family members. A cousin has finally been arrested for raping and killing her.)
Dad ALEXANDER FIODOR LEVINE falls into the latter category. He kidnaps his 4-year-old Brazilian daughter (Mom is Brazilian) and then dumps her in the Phillipines. Dad was arrrested in Canada.

While the Crown remains opposed to the release of a Saskatoon man accused of abducting his two-year-old daughter, the defence has inquired about the man being placed under electronic monitoring.
Alexander Fiodor Levine, 47, is charged with parental abduction between July 10, 2013 and Oct 11, 2013. He is accused of abducting his Brazilian toddler daughter from Ukraine and leaving her in the Philippines. The child was found on the weekend, safe and healthy, in the Philippines, after Levine was arrested and charged in Saskatoon on Oct. 11. The child was in the care of Philippine child welfare authorities as of Tuesday.
Levine on Wednesday made his second appearance in Saskatoon provincial court, where the Crown remained opposed to his release. Defence lawyer Myron Weber requested a bail verification report to be prepared for the bail hearing, with an assessment of the suitability of electronic monitoring for Levine.
The case was adjourned to Oct. 24.
Saskatoon police spokeswoman Kelsie Fraser said Tuesday it was not yet clear why Levine allegedly took the child to the Philippines, or who he left her with in that country.
Lavine, who lives in Saskatoon, is the father of the two-year-old girl who was born in Brazil to her Brazilian mother, Oziene Barbosa. The child never lived in Canada, Fraser said.
This summer, Levine and Barbosa travelled from Brazil to Ukraine. Barbosa reported the abduction to Ukrainian authorities in July, Fraser said. Also notified were Brazilian authorities, who contacted Saskatchewan Justice and the Saskatoon Police Service in August.
Numerous law enforcement and government agencies, in Canada and abroad, joined the investigation, including the SPS sex crimes and child abuse unit, the major crimes unit, forensic identification unit and tech crimes units, along with the RCMP National Missing Children Operations, the Canada Border Services Agency, Saskatchewan Justice and officials in the Philippines and Brazil.
Levine was arrested Friday in Saskatoon and charged with one count of parental abduction of a child with intent to deprive her lawful parent of the possession of the child.
Canada Border Services helped by tracking Levine’s passport to the Philippines, where authorities then became involved, Fraser said.

A Brazilian housewife has been sensationally cleared of having her father killed - after it emerged he had raped and beaten her and made her have 12 of his children.
Severina Maria da Silva was abused by her father Severino Pedro de Andrade since the age of nine during a 28-year ordeal in the poverty stricken Brazilian region of Pernambuco.
The 44-year-old woman was jailed for a year after two men stabbed 63-year-old Severino Pedro de Andrade to death in the family home in north-east Brazil in 2005.
Ms Silva said she was forced to live as her father's wife, and was driven to hire hitmen when she realised her abuser wanted to start sexual relations with his an 11-year-old who was both his daughter and granddaughter.
But after six years Ms Silva was freed within four hours of a court hearing yesterday after state prosecutors asked the jury to acquit her.
In a truly horrific case which has shocked Brazil, it emerged in court that Ms Silva gave birth to the first of her father's children at 15.
Jose Edvaldo da Silva, prosecutor for the state of Pernambuco, told the court Ms Silva had been the victim of an estimated 5,000 crimes including rapes as well as physical and psychological assaults over a period of 28 years.
The abuse had begun when Ms Silva was nine, apparently with the consent of her mother who shared the bed with the two of them.
The first child was one of many who died over the years due to genetic problems, lack of medical care and violence from her father.
Only five of the children survived, now aged between 12 and 19, including two with severe disabilities.
At some stage it is thought Ms Silva's mother left the family home.
By 2005 Ms Silva had become worried her 11-year-old daughter would be subjected to the same ordeal as her, so hired two hitmen to kill her father.
The dead man's sister told the court the whole family knew of her suffering but were too afraid to stop him themselves.
Ota Maria da Concei, 86, said: 'He was a very violent. We were afraid he would hit or even kill us. He had already beaten her a lot, from young as a dad and then also as a husband.'
Ms Silva's defence team are now set to sue the Brazilian state, but amazingly all the 44-year-old is now looking for is to be reunited with her mother and to get on with her life.
Ms Silva said: 'God willing, my mother will talk to me again.
'I believed they would find me innocent but you have to be ready for anything so I was afraid. But life will be different from now on.'
Psychologist Wedia Martins, who works for a local women's rights group and had been following the case, told Diario de Pernambuco: 'Nobody is more of a victim in this than Severina herself.
'She already had a history of attempting to run away from home and suicide.
'Her vulnerability only changed when she noticed her dad was getting closer to the daughter and did not want her history to repeat itself.'
The killers, Edon Francisco Amorim and Denisar dos Santos, have been sentenced to 18 and 17 years for murder respectively.

Single dad arrested for fathering kids with daughter (Vassoura de Botao, Brazil)
UNNAMED DAD has been arrested on allegations he fathered two children with his own daughter. It appears that the daughter has been locked up for 12 years by Daddy Dearest--shortly after her own mother "disappeared." The daughter has been lead to believe that the mother "abandoned" her and her siblings to this abuser. That may be. It is also likely that she met some other fate in the hands of a man like this. Wouldn't be the first time a domestic "disappearance" was actually a murder.

A 50-year-old Brazilian man has been arrested on allegations he fathered two children with his own daughter, whom he was said to have kept locked up for 12 years, media reported Wednesday.
The 26-year-old daughter was freed Tuesday by police who received an anonymous tipoff in the remote northeastern town of Vassoura de Botao.
"The victim said she and her four siblings were abandoned by their mother when she was 11, and from the age of 14 she was kept locked up and suffered abuse from her father," police chief Leonardo do Nascimento Diniz said. "At 22 she had her first daughter from the forced relations with her father and then, last year, she had another baby," he said.
The arrested man has confessed to the crime, Diniz said.
One child was found with the freed woman. The other was given to another family to look after.

Mums reunited with stolen children--but they have no chance in getting custody (United Kingdom)
Most of the time, the media and international diplomats focus on cases involving fathers like MARK GOLDMAN or CHRISTOPHER SAVOIE, who claim their children were "kidnapped" by their mothers. Both managed to get major media financial and governmental support. Goldman even got a U.S TV network to fly him to Brazil to "save" his son. Both have managed to get the U.S. State Department and US Congressman to actively help them.

Sky News has been given unprecedented access to travel to Libya with a group of mothers being reunited with their children after their fathers took them abroad.
In most cases the children were abducted. But in all cases the mothers have virtually no chance of getting them back.
The trip was organised by the UK charity Children and Families Across Borders.
The idea was for the mothers to get two weeks' organised access to their children at a holiday camp in the Libyan capitol Tripoli.
The project has the backing of Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi.
We set off for Tripoli with a group of mothers and grandparents from across the UK and Europe.
Anita Lewis from Norwich was married to a Libyan who snatched her five children 10 years ago.
She told us how her life changed forever when her ex-husband came to pick up their children one day and never brought them back.
'He hired a couple - a husband and wife - with a passport with 10 children on it which was used to smuggle my children out as their children,' she said.
'It was all very well organised. When the news comes that they are in Libya I guess you're supposed to be relieved that at least they are alive.
'But for me it was my worst fear realised - knowing I wouldn't be able to get them back.'
Anita travelled to Libya with her two youngest children from another relationship.
On the steps of the holiday village, she was reunited with her two oldest boys Hamza, 15, and Ali, 17.
Waiting inside were her daughters Rumaysa, 21, Safiya, 19, and Aisha, 12.
They were forbidden by their father from being greeted by their mother in front of our cameras.
Their father, Azzedin Elgirnazi, stood in reception watching everything.
He had also checked into the holiday village to keep watch over his ex-wife for her entire two-week stay.
Azzedin is still wanted by Interpol for five counts of child abduction.
In the past year, there has been a 39% increase in the number of British children abducted and taken to countries not signed up to the Hague Convention - an international protocol to help parents get their children back.
Few countries outside Europe observe the convention.
Marek Ganther from Children and Families Across Borders said: 'In Libya and most of the Arabic world it's virtually impossible to get your child back.
'There just aren't the legal mechanisms as there are with countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention on the international aspects of child abduction which does provide a speedy mechanism for the return and the resolution of these problems.
'I think we need the world to recognise that these days there are many more trans-cultural marriages and relationships and there is much more movement across borders and so these problems are only likely to increase.
'I think that some of the fathers feel that they can do whatever they want here.'
Contrast that with these UK mothers, where the governmental authorities take a very ho-hum attitude about their plight. We hear nothing but endless complaints about countries like Japan for favoring moms. We hear nothing at all about al the countries like Libya or others where fathers are catered to. Sky News has been given unprecedented access to travel to Libya with a group of mothers being reunited with their children after their fathers took them abroad.
In most cases the children were abducted. But in all cases the mothers have virtually no chance of getting them back.
The trip was organised by the UK charity Children and Families Across Borders.
The idea was for the mothers to get two weeks' organised access to their children at a holiday camp in the Libyan capitol Tripoli.
The project has the backing of Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi.
We set off for Tripoli with a group of mothers and grandparents from across the UK and Europe.
Anita Lewis from Norwich was married to a Libyan who snatched her five children 10 years ago.
She told us how her life changed forever when her ex-husband came to pick up their children one day and never brought them back.
'He hired a couple - a husband and wife - with a passport with 10 children on it which was used to smuggle my children out as their children,' she said.
'It was all very well organised. When the news comes that they are in Libya I guess you're supposed to be relieved that at least they are alive.
'But for me it was my worst fear realised - knowing I wouldn't be able to get them back.'
Anita travelled to Libya with her two youngest children from another relationship.
On the steps of the holiday village, she was reunited with her two oldest boys Hamza, 15, and Ali, 17.
Waiting inside were her daughters Rumaysa, 21, Safiya, 19, and Aisha, 12.
They were forbidden by their father from being greeted by their mother in front of our cameras.
Their father, Azzedin Elgirnazi, stood in reception watching everything.
He had also checked into the holiday village to keep watch over his ex-wife for her entire two-week stay.
Azzedin is still wanted by Interpol for five counts of child abduction.
In the past year, there has been a 39% increase in the number of British children abducted and taken to countries not signed up to the Hague Convention - an international protocol to help parents get their children back.
Few countries outside Europe observe the convention.
Marek Ganther from Children and Families Across Borders said: 'In Libya and most of the Arabic world it's virtually impossible to get your child back.
'There just aren't the legal mechanisms as there are with countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention on the international aspects of child abduction which does provide a speedy mechanism for the return and the resolution of these problems.
'I think we need the world to recognise that these days there are many more trans-cultural marriages and relationships and there is much more movement across borders and so these problems are only likely to increase.
'I think that some of the fathers feel that they can do whatever they want here.'

Prosecutors say they will now be filing charges against him for imprisoning his daughter for 12 years, raping her, and forcing her to bear 7 children. Note that this is a SINGLE DAD. There was no mother in this home when the sexual abuse occurred. Appears this @$$hole also sexually abused his children/grandchildren with the daughter, too. And it seems another daughter was abused as well, who left the child with Daddy Dearest when she fled the home.

SAO PAULO — Prosecutors said Wednesday they will file criminal charges against a man who allegedly imprisoned his daughter for 12 years and fathered her seven children.
Police have gathered enough evidence in their investigation to charge Jose Agostinho Pereira, prosecutor Alineide Martins Rabelo Costa said.
Authorities say that Pereira kept his daughter a virtual prisoner since 1998 in a thatched-roof hut outside a tiny fishing village in northeastern Brazil. They also say that he abused two of the children he had with his daughter.
If convicted, Pereira could be sentenced to up to 30 years in jail, Costa said.
Pereira allegedly began to sexually abuse the daughter when she was just 12 and after his wife left him. They had their first child four years later.
He was jailed earlier this month in the city of Pinheiro in Maranhao state. His daughter and the children are being cared for by the state's protective care services.
Under Brazilian law, police can detain a suspect without charges until police finish gathering evidence.
Shortly after his arrest, Pereira told local television station TV Cidade: "It's a crime, I know it's a crime. But she was also committing (a crime). I only did it because it was a consenting love. If she had not consented to it, I wouldn't have done it."
Another of Pereira's daughters who is now 31 has told police that her father also raped her and that she fathered his son about 17 years ago. She said that she fled home after giving birth, leaving the child with her father.
Pereira has not obtained a lawyer and will likely be defended by a court-appointed attorney, Costa said.
Costa said she plans to file charges against Pereira within five days.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A farmer in Brazil is accused of holding his daughter captive for more than 15 years and fathering seven children with her, at least one of whom he also raped, police said on Thursday.
Police arrested Jose Agostinho Pereira, 54, in the northeastern state of Maranhao on Tuesday in a case echoing that of Austria's Josef Fritzl, who was found guilty last year of locking and raping his daughter in a cellar over 24 years.
Pereira confessed to fathering some of the children with his daughter, Sandra Maria Monteiro, but denied sexually abusing them, police officer Adriana Meireles told Reuters from the town of Pinheiro near the community where he was arrested.
Monteiro, now 28, was about 12 years old when the sexual abuse is believed to have started, police said.
Police officers had to travel by canoe to reach Pereira's remote hut in Experimento, where they found six of the children between the ages of two and 12 undernourished, lacking clothes and apparently traumatized, she said.
"It was 5 in the afternoon when we arrived and they still hadn't eaten all day, they were without clothes, dirty, scratched and had wounds on their bodies," said Meireles, the head of the civil police department for women in Pinheiro.
One of the two girls said she had been abused by her father and another, aged 5, was found to have lesions on her vagina that suggested she had also been abused.
"Everyone in the community suspected it because the daughter would be pregnant but always lived with her father. But the people there are simple and never said anything," Meireles said.
Pereira is being detained while prosecutors prepare charges against him. Child welfare agencies are caring for the children.
The case came to light two weeks ago when police were tipped off during a local campaign against pedophilia, Meireles said.

The pair will serve their sentences in separate prisons outside Sao Paulo, where they have been held since their arrest in April 2008. They will then be eligible to complete a shorter term for other offences in a semi-open prison.

Dad DJALMA ISAIAS RIBEIRO had been separated from this ex-wife for 5 months. He had a history of death threats against her. There is even a police report of an assault against her--but of course Ribeiro was released on bail.
Not to worry, because a history like that doesn't keep you from getting weekend visitation, no sir. So of course, it's only a matter of time before this volatile, dangerous father goes off the deep end for some utterly stupid, inane reason. And here's what it was. Daddy's feelings were weally, weally hurt when he wasn't invited to the birthday party of his 4-year-old son. So next time Daddy had his weekend visitation, he started a drama-queen police standoff and shot the boy dead.

A Brazilian civil servant, 27, killed his own 4-year-old son with two shots to the head, informed the military police of Piedade de Caratinga, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
According to authorities, Djalma Isaías Ribeiro, went to the child's grandmother's house and asked her to take the son so that he would buy him a toy car since the boy had his birthday last Saturday.
Instead Ribeiro took the child to a thicket, which is about two miles from the city center, known as Rio Preto stream. From there, he called several residents in the city and told them he was going to kill his son.
Soldier Leonardo Batista told reporters that when police arrived on the scene, they encountered the man with the child in his arms and a gun to his own head.
"We negotiated for him to put his son and the gun on the floor. After a long talk he ended up complying," said the soldier.
When officers went to pick up the child, however, they found out that the boy already been shot twice in the head.
"The father had killed the child but kept in his even after our arrival. At no time we were able to see that the child had been shot," said the policeman. One of the bullets only grazed the boy's head but the other pierced the skull.
The police rushed the boy to the city's Health Center, but he arrived there already dead. Just after being arrested the father told police that he had killed his son because he hadn't been invited to the kid's birthday party last Saturday.
According to Batista, "He always takes the child on weekends, but due to the party, he wasn't able to go out with the son,"
The child's parents, according to authorities, are separated for about five months. Since the separation the mother has received several death threats from the ex-husband.
"We even have a police report of an assault committed by the man last December," said the police. The man was imprisoned at the time, but was released on bail.
According to people who knew Ribeiro, he was unhappy with the separation and had bought the gun in São Paulo keeping it in the woods where the crime occurred.
On Monday, he took a taxi with a child and went to the thicket. He even called an ex-wife's friend to take her to the woods because he could not accept the end of the relationship and he would kill the son as an act of revenge.
The 5,500 residents of Piedade de Caratinga, in the Vale do Rio Doce, are shocked and upset by the crime. The suspect has been taken to the town's police station.

For Sergio Tostes, the lawyer of the Brazilian family of American boy Sean Goldman, David Goldman's announcement that he intends to sue to get back what he spent - about half a million dollars - in his judicial battle to get his son back just shows what he says always was the American's objective: getting money from the rich Bianchis and Lins e Silva.
This "reveals the character" of Goldman, he told reporters in Brazil, adding: "It's just proof that all he ever wanted was money. This is the concern that moves him."
And he continued "This statement is not surprising and it only shows the pecuniary interest of Mr. David Goldman. All he did was not in the interest of the son, it was pecuniary interest."
Tostes noted that the Bianchis, the grandparents of Sean, had already paid the American father US$ 150,000 so he would end the lawsuit against the Bianchis in which they were co-defendants charged with kidnapping the child together with Bruna Bianchi, who went with the son to Brazil five years ago when he was 4.
She ended up dying a little over a year ago when giving birth to Chiara, her daughter with famous lawyer, João Paulo Lins e Silva whom she married.
The Brazilian lawyer also said he considers "ridiculous" all the exposure NBC TV is giving to the case. The network has shown Sean interacting with the father, arriving at his old house in New Jersey, opening Christmas gifts and getting back to his toddler time's bedroom.
Tostes stated that the last lawsuit in Brazil in favor of Goldman was filed by the Brazilian Attorney General and paid by Brazilian taxpayers' money: "The Federal Government spent Brazilian taxpayers' money and he is charging for his attorney."
Sean's Brazilian grandmother, Silvana Bianchi, didn't want to make a longer comment on Goldman's actions, saying only that she was "appalled."
She talked about her own feelings, however: "I'm terrified. I'm tired of watching TV, I'm very upset, I'd rather not see."
Bianchi revealed she spoke to Sean on Tuesday. The call, according to her, was made from David Goldman's phone and lasted about 15 minutes. "I asked if he was okay, he said he was missing us a lot. It was grandma's talk, concerned with her grandson's health. He said all was going well. My heart is with him, we think of him all day."
The grandmother said that she is waiting for a court decision to visit her grandson in the U.S. "I didn't want to let Sean go, but had to allow it because of the law. So, the same way there is a law for him there is a law for me," she added in a reference to the fact that she needs legal authorization to be able to see the boy in the United States.
Tostes informed that the judicial proceedings to get Sean back to Brazil will continue in the Brazilian courts despite the decision by Brazil's Chief Justice, Gilmar Mendes, who ruled that the American boy should be handed over to his father.
"The process is not over and we still have all the available appeals including habeas corpus. Gilmar Mendes's decision was what is legally called anticipated guardianship. It was against this decision I said I wouldn't appeal, because the risk of Sean being subject to seizure by police force was immense," the lawyer stated.
Brazil's Minister of the Special Secretariat for Human Rights, Paulo Vannuchi defended on Tuesday the Brazilian court's decision to hand over Sean to his father. According to a statement from his office, the Supreme Court's (STF) decision complied with the Hague Convention, of which Brazil is a signatory.
"Any child taken from the country in which he lives to another country, and who is retained without the consent of one of the parents, should be immediately taken back, so that all matters relating to custody and visitation can be decided in the country of habitual residence," wrote the minister in a note.

Goldman Only Cares About the Money, Says Lawyer for Sean's Brazilian Family

For Sergio Tostes, the lawyer of the Brazilian family of American boy Sean Goldman, David Goldman's announcement that he intends to sue to get back what he spent - about half a million dollars - in his judicial battle to get his son back just shows what he says always was the American's objective: getting money from the rich Bianchis and Lins e Silva.
This "reveals the character" of Goldman, he told reporters in Brazil, adding: "It's just proof that all he ever wanted was money. This is the concern that moves him."
And he continued "This statement is not surprising and it only shows the pecuniary interest of Mr. David Goldman. All he did was not in the interest of the son, it was pecuniary interest."
Tostes noted that the Bianchis, the grandparents of Sean, had already paid the American father US$ 150,000 so he would end the lawsuit against the Bianchis in which they were co-defendants charged with kidnapping the child together with Bruna Bianchi, who went with the son to Brazil five years ago when he was 4.
She ended up dying a little over a year ago when giving birth to Chiara, her daughter with famous lawyer, João Paulo Lins e Silva whom she married.
The Brazilian lawyer also said he considers "ridiculous" all the exposure NBC TV is giving to the case. The network has shown Sean interacting with the father, arriving at his old house in New Jersey, opening Christmas gifts and getting back to his toddler time's bedroom.
Tostes stated that the last lawsuit in Brazil in favor of Goldman was filed by the Brazilian Attorney General and paid by Brazilian taxpayers' money: "The Federal Government spent Brazilian taxpayers' money and he is charging for his attorney."
Sean's Brazilian grandmother, Silvana Bianchi, didn't want to make a longer comment on Goldman's actions, saying only that she was "appalled."
She talked about her own feelings, however: "I'm terrified. I'm tired of watching TV, I'm very upset, I'd rather not see."
Bianchi revealed she spoke to Sean on Tuesday. The call, according to her, was made from David Goldman's phone and lasted about 15 minutes. "I asked if he was okay, he said he was missing us a lot. It was grandma's talk, concerned with her grandson's health. He said all was going well. My heart is with him, we think of him all day."
The grandmother said that she is waiting for a court decision to visit her grandson in the U.S. "I didn't want to let Sean go, but had to allow it because of the law. So, the same way there is a law for him there is a law for me," she added in a reference to the fact that she needs legal authorization to be able to see the boy in the United States.
Tostes informed that the judicial proceedings to get Sean back to Brazil will continue in the Brazilian courts despite the decision by Brazil's Chief Justice, Gilmar Mendes, who ruled that the American boy should be handed over to his father.
"The process is not over and we still have all the available appeals including habeas corpus. Gilmar Mendes's decision was what is legally called anticipated guardianship. It was against this decision I said I wouldn't appeal, because the risk of Sean being subject to seizure by police force was immense," the lawyer stated.
Brazil's Minister of the Special Secretariat for Human Rights, Paulo Vannuchi defended on Tuesday the Brazilian court's decision to hand over Sean to his father. According to a statement from his office, the Supreme Court's (STF) decision complied with the Hague Convention, of which Brazil is a signatory.
"Any child taken from the country in which he lives to another country, and who is retained without the consent of one of the parents, should be immediately taken back, so that all matters relating to custody and visitation can be decided in the country of habitual residence," wrote the minister in a note.

NBC blasted for "checkbook journalism" in Goldman custody case
Again, I have to wonder why dad DAVID GOLDMAN is treated like royalty when so many other parents, especially mothers, get NO help with locating or recovering their missing and/or abducted children. They especially don't get chartered planes offered up on a golden platter like NBC did for Goldman. What is up with that?

Goldman case: Journalism group rips NBC News
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) blasted NBC News for practicing checkbook journalism to obtain an interview with David Goldman and his son, Sean, in connection with a headline-grabbing international custody case. NBC News paid for the plane that took Goldman and his son from Brazil (where the boy was living) to the United States.
SPJ's Ethics Committee said in a statement released Monday that it is "appalled" that "NBC News breached widely accepted ethical journalism guidelines by providing the plane that carried David Goldman and his son Sean back to the United States from Brazil...."
The statement went on to say: "NBC conducted an exclusive interview with David Goldman during the flight it financed and another exclusive interview once the Goldmans returned to the United States. Journalists know this practice as 'checkbook journalism.' The SPJ Code of Ethics urges journalists to act independently by avoiding bidding for news and by avoiding conflicts of interest."
NBC News has been involved in other forms of questionable "journalism" in connection with its top-rated morning show, "Today," where the Goldman interview first appeared.
In November, an NBC production company produced an hourlong interview show for TLC featuring the cable channel's reality TV star, Kate Gosselin. Natalie Morales, a correspondent and anchor for NBC News, conducted the interview for the show that aired on TLC in the cable channel's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" weekly lineup spot. TLC and NBC News were essentially production partners in the show at a time when Gosselin was also appearing on the "Today" show as someone in the news.
But the Goldman payout is far more obvious and egregious.

By making itself part of a breaking news story on which it was reporting — apparently to cash in on the exclusivity assured by its expensive gesture — NBC jeopardized its journalistic independence and credibility in its initial and subsequent reports. In effect, the network branded the story as its own, creating a corporate and promotional interest in the way the story unfolds. NBC's ability to report the story fairly has been compromised by its financial involvement.
"The public could rightly assume that NBC News bought exclusive interviews and images, as well as the family's loyalty, with an extravagant gift," Ethics Committee Chairman Andy Schotz said.
The news media's duty is to report news, not help create it. The race to be first should not involve buying — directly or indirectly — interviews, an unseemly practice that raises questions of neutrality, integrity and credibility.
"Mixing financial and promotional motives with an impartial search for truth stains honest, ethical reporting," Schotz said."Checkbook journalism has no place in the news business."
The SPJ Code of Ethics also urges journalists to "clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct."
"NBC must now, belatedly, explain why it entangled its news reporting and corporate interests in this story, as well as the terms of any deal it made with the Goldman family," Schotz said. "NBC also is ethically bound to adequately disclose its active role in the story in each of its future reports on the Goldmans."

Grandmother: Government sold out little boy for trade agreement (Brazil)
I haven't said anything about dad DAVID GOLDMAN and the whole media hoopla surrounding his retrieval of his "kidnapped" son (complete with private jet provided by a U.S. television network, that's how poor and oppressed Daddy is). Frankly, the whole circus is so disgusting that I could barely stand to think about it, much less write about it. Reminds me way too much of dad CHRISTOPHER SAVOIE, who also got major U.S. media attention despite a very dubious case once you started digging into the facts. Meanwhile, fathers who take their kids overseas, away from the childdren's mothers, are consistently ignored by anybody but the hometown newspaper. That's the subject of a future post, for sure.
Meanwhile, since you aren't going to hear a balanced account of this case from the cheerleader U.S. press, I'm posting this account from the grandmother, published in Brazzil Magazine.

Silvana Bianchi, the grandmother of Sean Goldman, the 9-year-old American boy who was taken to Brazil by his mother when he was 4 and who was returned to the United States, this Christmas Eve, met the press in Rio, on Christmas day, to talk about the departure of her grandson.
Bianchi, who had sent an open letter to Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asking that Sean be heard by the courts so that he could tell the judge if he wished to stay in Brazil or live with his father in the US, once again criticized the decision of the Supreme Court that ordered the immediate handover of the boy to his American father.
"It was one of the saddest things in my life, because to me Sean was a younger son," the grandmother stated. "I had already lost my daughter, I kept Sean, my son Luca and the little girl. But to give up a child is a very painful thing."
She recalled how painful it was to have to say goodbye to the boy at Rio's US Consulate:
"I gave Sean a kiss and said, 'Sean, my heart and yours are going to be together forever, nobody can separate us.' What's inside my heart and what's inside Sean's heart no one will separate, no one will censor, no one will pull out as they did. After that we parted and so far I haven't had news of him."
She cried a lot and seemed outraged. "What they've done to my grandson is such a coward act, that sentence by Minister Gilmar Mendes is inhumane. He separated two siblings. I'm with a baby girl of 1 year and 5 months in my house who is asking me all the time where is her brother. To exchange my grandson for an economic agreement between two countries is an act with a child that has no adjective to describe it."
Sean's uncle, Luca Bianchi, who also participated in the press conference, commented that David Goldman, Sean's father, showed no interest in seeing the child before the death of Bruna Bianchi, the boy's mother and his sister, who died while giving birth to daughter Chiara, a little over one year ago.
"The first time he requested to visit Sean was a week after the death of my sister. Before that, I believe that for 4 years and 8 months, he never asked to visit the son," said Luca, who also told reporters how the boy acted upon learning he would have to go back to the US.
"There are two things he said the day he got the news that stuck in my head. The first was when we said, 'Look, Sean, we lost, we did everything we could, but now there's nothing else we can do, you will have to go back to the United States'. He said: 'But how? But I don't want. I don't want.' We told him, 'But it's the law.' He then said: 'Damn, I lost my mother and now am I going to lose my whole family?"
The Bianchis say they want to go as soon as they can to the United States, but they want to be sure that they will be allowed to see Sean.
"We will ask for visitation rights, through the Brazilian embassy in Washington and this visit will happen as soon as possible," said the grandmother.
Sergio Tostes, the family's lawyer, showed the press the Christmas card made by Sean and sent to him and his wife.
"I want to show the card he sent us: 'Sergio and Etilene, thanks for the help and three million things more. I write little because this can't be explained with words. Merry Christmas, a kiss, Sean. Don't throw this away. I made it myself,'" read Tostes.

BRASILIA, Brazil -- The stepfather of a 2-year-old boy found with 42 needles in his body has confessed to jabbing them into the toddler as part of a religious ritual, Brazilian police said Thursday.
Roberto Carlos Magalhaes told detectives that a woman who went into a trance would "command him to stick the needles in the boy's body," police inspector Helder Fernandes Santana said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.
"According to his confession, he acted under influence of the woman, but it was him who stuck the needles in the boy's body," the inspector said. He said three people, including the stepfather and the woman, have been arrested, though no charges have yet been filed.
An enraged crowd of more than 100 people surrounded the police station where the suspects were held Wednesday night, hurling rocks at the building. Santana said they broke out a window of his own car because they wrongly believed the suspects were in it.
Extra police were called in to restore order and protect the suspects.
The child, meanwhile, was airlifted to the heart unit of a major hospital in northeastern Brazil Thursday because two of the needles are close to his heart, but it was not immediately clear when doctors might be able to remove them.
Surgeons at a hospital in the town of Barreiras in Bahia state, where the boy had been hospitalized since Sunday had decided not to try to remove any needles immediately for fear they could cause more damage.
Doctors located 42 needles in the boy, who was in stable condition in the coastal city of Salvador after a 240-mile (390-kilometer) flight to a hospital with a special heart unit.
Hospital spokeswoman Susy Moreno said an evaluation of how to treat the boy probably would not be finished until Friday.
The boy's mother, a maid, took him to a hospital in the small northeastern city of Ibotirama on Dec. 10, saying he was complaining of pain. Three days later, after X-rays revealed many of the needles, doctors moved him to the larger hospital in the nearby city of Barreiras.
The mother told police she didn't know how the needles got inside her son, whose name was not released because of his age.
The boy's father, Gessivaldo Alves, told the newspaper A Tarde that he believed his son could have been a victim of a black magic ritual. Alves reportedly said he visited the home where the boy was living and found unspecified items that could be used for black magic.
Santana said police are investigating to determine what sort of religious sect the stepfather and the women belonged to.
One of the doctors who treated the child, Luiz Cesar Soltoski, said he believed that the needles were stuck into the child's body one by one.
"We think it could have only been by penetration because we found needles in the lung, the left leg and in different parts of the thorax. It couldn't have been by ingestion," Soltoski said.
Doctors found no signs of outside wounds on the boy. X-ray images carried by Brazilian Web sites clearly showed some of the needles deep inside his body.
