Dad charged with shaking, nearly killing 2-year-old son (Muskegon, Michigan)

Dad is identified as JOSEPH MICHAEL KRYPTEL II. No mention of Mom. In Michigan, I suspect she may have been working a low-wage job while the daddy played at being a "stay-at-home" (i.e. an abusive deadbeat).

INVISIBLE MOTHER ALERT

At one point, two-month-old Joseph Michael Krypel III stopped breathing.

The baby's near death on the next-to-last day of the old year was no accident and no illness, authorities say.

The infant's father, 25-year-old Joseph Michael Krypel II of Norton Shores, is lodged in the Muskegon County Jail facing a felony charge of first-degree child abuse. That's punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Police and prosecutors believe Krypel shook or otherwise injured his son in their home at 3219 Victoria.

Muskegon County Child Protective Services, alerted by medical personnel at Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus, called police around 5:30 a.m. Dec. 30, according to Norton Shores Police Lt. Jon Gale.

The baby had been taken to Hackley's emergency room with reported dehydration and difficulty breathing, Gale said. The boy's condition was so severe that he was transported to Spectrum hospital in Grand Rapids.

Based on doctors' statements and other interviews, the father was charged, Gale said.

Police Friday didn't have information on the baby's current condition. As of Jan. 4, six days after being hospitalized, he was reported in stable condition at Spectrum, Gale said.

Joseph Krypel II was arraigned Tuesday before Muskegon County 60th District Judge Andrew Wierengo III. Wierengo set bond at $25,000 cash or surety and scheduled a preliminary examination for Jan. 24.

As of Friday, Krypel remained lodged in jail.
