NEW ROCHELLE — The man who shot his daughter then killed himself Wednesday morning near the train station did not leave a suicide note, city police said Thursday.

New Rochelle detectives searched Alfredo Monegro's second-floor apartment at 176th Street in Washington Heights but did not find a suicide note, Commissioner Patrick Carroll said Thursday.

Monegro, 61, confronted his daughter, Miosotis Monegro, 35, on Memorial Highway near Station Plaza at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday. Witnesses and police said he shot her once in the back of the head. He then fell to his knees, put the revolver in his mouth and fired once, killing himself.

Miosotis Monegro remained in critical condition Thursday at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

"There is a lot more to this, but those answers lie with the family," Carroll said when asked if police knew a motive for the attempted murder and suicide.

Carroll said the police investigation has concluded.

"It is a closed case," the police commissioner said.

Alfredo Monegro seemed to be angry that his daughter left the five-story brick apartment building in Washington Heights to live with her brothers, Jose and Abel, at the luxury Avalon apartment complex three months ago, Detective Capt. Joseph Schaller said.

"He was very possessive," said Schaller, commander of the Detective Division. "He was unhappy with the living arrangement ."

Attempts to reach Miosotis Monegro's brothers at the Avalon were unsuccessful.

Schaller said there were no reports with his department or New York City police concerning domestic violence or abuse involving the father and daughter.

The violence on a busy street in broad daylight shocked many.

"I cannot fathom how a father could ever deliberately harm a child," New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said in a brief statement.

An autopsy by the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office concluded that Alfredo Monegro committed suicide and died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Schaller said the .38-caliber revolver used in the shootings was not reported stolen. Police are trying to determine the history of the weapon, which could take months, Schaller said.

The brief confrontation between the father and daughter happened as she was walking to the train station to go to a job she recently started in lower Manhattan.

She was met by her father between the station and her apartment building. He was wearing a baseball cap and a white jacket.

"I doubt if (she) knew he was coming up," Carroll said.

A witness, Renato Sansotta, 44, a cabdriver for Green Team Taxi, said Monegro's daughter tried to walk away from him after they had brief words.

Monegro called her, drew the revolver from his pocket and shot her at close range as she twisted her body away from him. He then dropped to his knees and shot himself.

Jose Monegro witnessed some of the incident from an enclosed glass walkway at the Avalon, police said. His brother was still in their apartment.

The father worked in a Manhattan restaurant and was divorced from his wife, who lives in New Jersey.

Miosotis Monegro is single and has no children, police said.
