PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A father has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for causing injuries to his 18-month-old son that left him blind and unable to hold up his head.
The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/uGz8Jy) that Deanthony Allen told police he squeezed and shook his baby in November 2010 and that he put his hand over his mouth to stop him from crying.
Johnnel, then 3-1/2 months old, was not breathing when he arrived at Hasbro Children's Hospital.
The child's injuries included two detached retinas, seven fractured ribs, contusions and brain injuries. Authorities say he remains clinically blind, unable to walk and prone to severe seizures. He wears mitts to keep his hands open and can't hold his head up.
Allen, who was 18 at the time of his child's injuries, was convicted of child abuse.
