DASTARDLY DADS FROM THE ARCHIVES (Hudson, New York - 1903)

Family annihilators may be more common these days, but it's not an entirely new phenomena. Back in 1903, a single father by the name of JOSEPH PHILLIPS murdered his three children because he presumable couldn't purchase "suitable Christmas gifts." The mother had died the previous summer.

POVERTY LEADS TO MURDER.

Unable to Buy Christmas Gifts Father Kills Children and Himself.

Hudson, N.Y., Dec. 25.--Brooding over his inability to purchase suitable Christmas gifts for his three motherless children, Joseph Phillips, a Hollowville farmer, last night murdered the children and then hanged himself in a neighbor's barn.

Philips had complained lately of his poverty, and it is believed his mind became unsettled.

The three murdered children were Todo, aged fifteen; Frank, aged eleven, and Carrie, aged ten. Mrs. Phillips died last Summer.
